Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia! As usual, please note that we change hundreds of tiny details every week, so these are just the highlights.

As mentioned in last week's notes, we are beginning a trial period of releasing twice per week, on Tuesday and Thursday. The benefits of making this change are that updates get released faster, and individual releases are smaller and more manageable. This week, we are posting this single technical update blog, containing details of yesterday's and tomorrow's releases.

In the future, when needed, the technical update will include a 'Looking Ahead' section to give details of high-profile changes expected the following week. As readers of the technical update blogs, we welcome your feedback …

    Gooooood morning Wikiaaaaa!

Ducksoup, checking in. Today - and for about a week - we're slowly rolling out updates to VisualEditor, trying to give as many Wikians as possible the chance to create, collaborate, and be original. And we're doing that by upgrading VisualEditor’s performance and introducing some really cool new features.

Our biggest change - which will roll out locally in a week, around March 25th - is support for IME. Now our Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese communities will have access to VisualEditor. I know a couple of my international colleagues on the community team have given it a spin and really enjoyed the experience. It should be seamless and intuitive - if you're fluent in any of those languages, give it a shot…

    • On communities with Forums enabled but Message Wall disabled, links to user talk pages were pointing to the wrong destination. A fix for this is already live.
    • Several issues with preview widths and heights in the classic editor will be fixed, and further tweaks are planned.
    • The classic editor's automatic edit summaries (e.g. section titles, undo revision notes) will be fixed.
    • Sections on the global navigation's hub dropdown will no longer sometimes get split across the two column…

    Greetings, Wikians!

As many of you know, wikitext is the main building block of articles across Wikia, but it can often be hard to comprehend what you're seeing at a glance, especially on more complex pages. We're planning on introducing a feature called 'syntax highlighting', visible when editing the source code of an article, to help make this easier.

Essentially, syntax highlighting takes what is written on the page and highlights the various types of code in different colours to help a reader identify what part does what. For example, links are highlighted with a blue background, and templates become yellow.

We also plan to add a slightly different kind of highlighting to all CSS, JS and Lua module pages, much like you may already have se…

    • The classic editor will be updated with clear links to the mobile and desktop previews, in an effort to help editors easily see how their articles will be seen by users on different devices. This tweak will also see the return of edit summaries that can autocomplete (as it is now a single line input).

    • When on the mobile skin, tapping the 'Full site' link will work properly again.
    • We will fix a situation that could cause a confusing break in the process when starting a new wikia …

    • Highlighted threads will no longer display misaligned in the notifications dropdown.
    • New image galleries will now be compressed to a narrower layout when appearing alongside infoboxes and similar page content.
    • Facebook widgets, such as the Like button and Share button, will now display properly. No changes to existing widget code should be required.
    • An issue which could cause the notifications dropdown to get stuck on 'Loading notifications' will be fixed.
    • Creating new Wikia Maps …

    • A third round of planned updates to the global navigation will be arriving - this week's update will include:
      • Notifications listed in a separate menu, with improved behaviour for high numbers of notifications
      • A search button in the search box
      • Larger avatar icons, and slightly thinner bar overall

    • Special:CSS will now use a consistent font across all languages, helping solve an issue with certain Asian languages, including Chinese.

    • Another round of planned updates to the global navigation will be arriving - in this update, the bottom border is replaced with a drop-shadow, and the bar will now fade to transparent black when you scroll down the page.

    • Accidentally leaving off "/wiki/" on non-English wikias will now correctly send you to the appropriate article.
    • Media thumbnails will no longer display as broken during upload in the VisualEditor's media tool.
