Oy vey. First of all, the biggest communities haven't left. See Hub:Big wikis. Second of all, honestly: do you think Wikia will be phased by someone who can't even read the comment that clearly states "Please put your content under this line. Be sure to sign your edits with four tildes: ~~~~"? Seriously. Your arguments are moot, this thread is a waste of your time and our time. Actually, Damac1214 is correct. Wowpedia, the biggest wiki here, forked. As did many other big wikis. More are leaving. It is a shame, because it would be so simple to fix the main problems causing wikis to leave. I was about to move the Cannabis Wiki, to Shoutwiki, but decided to wait (after signing up for an import), and check out other wiki farms, or private hosting. --Timeshifter 03:57, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Actually, WoWWiki (Wowpedia) was not the biggest wiki here, in either articles or editors. They did have the most pageviews, but that doesn't matter when considering whether or not a wiki is big. Ajraddatz 03:53, February 7, 2011 (UTC)

Heh, he might be correct but the community forum is not the best place for hate mail to Wikia, since it's mostly visited by regular wikians and not so much the staff. Actually, when I think of it, no place is good for hate mail to Wikia unless it contains some constructive criticism instead of "You guys suck" drama. lol. Sovq 07:51, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Technically, LyricWiki is the biggest wiki at Wikia, even before Wowpedia forked. WoWWiki was the biggest before LyricWiki joined Wikia, but Wookieepedia was bigger than WoWWiki for a long time. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 3 Feb 2011 1:46 AM Pacific

I prefer the Vector skin. Maybe Wikia will allow wikis here to make it the default skin. Shoutwiki will allow it as the default skin when they upgrade to MediaWiki 1.16. Competition is good.

In any case, wiki farms have to figure out how to make money. Paying for Monaco and other "premium" skins will not work in my opinion. It almost always comes back to ad revenue, and where to put the ads. Otherwise wiki farms don't survive profitably. Left sidebars at 300 pixels wide would work, along with header ads, and bottom of the page ads. But then the content space is squeezed if a fixed-width is used that is too narrow (as at Wikia). A wider left sidebar is fine if content space has a fluid width up to a certain maximum width. This way the content space expands or shrinks to work with smartphones, laptops, PC monitors, and wider screens. But that maximum width has to be wider than the current fixed width at Wikia. The ratio of content space width to sidebar width will more and more be the determining factor in popularity of wiki farms in my opinion.

A possible solution for any wiki farm is to put the ads (marked clearly as "ads") in content space, and to use a narrow sidebar, or no sidebar. But there is a religious war between people who think they can survive with narrow sidebar text ads (which is not financially possible), and people who think they can squeeze content space way too much in order to plaster the rest of the space with ads, "spotlights", fluff, bling, you-name-it.

Remember that Wikia is the only wiki farm with Oasis. No other wiki farms have these problems. And I don't think the sidebar is the crux of our content problems, there are many more factors involved. ShoutWiki have had to develop the Monaco skin, whereas the vector skin is downloadable to any one. Make sense? --George2001hi (Discussion) 18:26, February 5, 2011 (UTC)

I know. As much as I like Monaco, it just won't be worth paying for with Vector and Monobook. I also really hate their 5 wiki limit. But overall they're a pretty good wikifarm. Hockeyben 05:23, February 5, 2011 (UTC)
