Layouts

Hello,

I've tried looking for it, but I don't see where you add a new page layout to Add New Page. The Layout Builder, from comments on this Forum, does not actually build editable pages, but fixed format pages. I'd like to do something like Wikipedia uses with preload templates, but which allow you to edit the page afterwards.

Am I mistaken, and Layout Builder only functions like Wikipedia's various Article Wizards, or is it more like a Database Form, which has a fixed noneditable format, with data retrieved into boxes on the form? (in which case Layout Builder builds Forms...)

I like the functions from Layout Builder that asks questions and fills out fields, like Article Wizards on Wikipedia, which will fill out parameters on preload templates, but if it doesn't result in a standard page, instead creating a Form, it's much too inflexible for me.

It's this: "more like a Database Form, which has a fixed noneditable format, with data retrieved into boxes on the form? (in which case Layout Builder builds Forms...)"
Not one person has ever been able to do something useful with that layout builder.
The best thing is to do a few pages that can be used with a preload. These are called boilerplates.
To do that, edit MediaWiki:Newarticletext to put links to the preload content (or you can put a single call to a template to do that work).
The links have the format:
[{{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAMEE}}|action=edit&preload=Boilerplate/monsters}} monsters]
[{{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAMEE}}|action=edit&preload=Boilerplate/weapons}} weapons]
The page Boilerplate/monsters is where you put the content related to monsters. The page Boilerplate/weapons is where you put the content related to weapons.

Thanks. I'll start building preload templates (well, I've already started building substitution boilerplate templates... so not much of a change from that)
If Layout Builder is of such little use, why is it in the the Admin Tasks list of things to accomplish?

It's impossible to answer that question without using the words "wikia", "are" and "retards". So I won't.

You could use "overlords", "could be", and "impervious to feedback" instead and it would still make sense to some of us... ;-) -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10 Oct 2011 7:00 PM Pacific

Menu

So... I found this thing called MediaWiki:Createplate-list which is apparently the list used by Special:Createpage to list the default page types... except when I edit it, it doesn't show up on the CreatePage menu. I guess there's no way to edit that then?
And is there a way to edit "Standard Page Layout"
Thanks. ForestMonthZero 07:20, October 21, 2011 (UTC)

Can I replace the "Add A Page" link with a link to some other page (say Project:Article Wizard ?) ForestMonthZero 07:53, October 25, 2011 (UTC)

Preloads

About the preload thing, I do know how use a preload page through a link, but if an user simply create a new page, how can he select the preload page? Are there any examples? leviathan_89 22:34, 12 October, 2011 (UTC)

I guess we're running a modified MediaWiki pre-1.17? According to the MediaWiki site, 1.17 and above should strip the noinclude stuff out of a preload... ForestMonthZero 10:00, October 23, 2011 (UTC)
Yes, we're on 16.5 Sovq 10:09, October 23, 2011 (UTC)
Thanks... though nopreload also doesn't seem to work. Preload is loading the nopreload section into pages. ForestMonthZero 10:14, October 23, 2011 (UTC)

Publish

Is there a way to link in a new Publish button, into the editintro that I use with the Preload?

Thanks. ForestMonthZero 07:41, October 25, 2011 (UTC)
