From the terms of use I gathered that Wikia frowns upon externally hosted files, but doesn't completely disallow them. Now I wonder on which side my situation falls. The wiki I founded is a game modding wiki and a considerable part of the articles will document the large number of that game's database tables. The documentation will be here on the wiki, but I want to host the tables myself, because

  1. they have odd formats; some tables have a huge number of columns; some have a huge number of rows; some have both; they hardly fit onto a computer screen as it is - let alone the small portion of it that Wikia let's me use; in other words: they simply require an empty browser window
  2. they're immutable; they're for reference only; there's no need whatsoever for anybody to change anything about them; in fact: they mustn't be changed

So, do you guys think Wikia would be fine with me hosting these tables on my own server? Or: Do you think there's a chance I can host immutable HTML files here?

I should probably give you an example:

I don't see any problems with that, but I also don't see anything in the Terms of Use that prohibits linking to externally hosted files. If you want to make sure, I'd suggest sending a quick message to Special:Contact just to check, but I doubt they will have an issue. -- RandomTime 13:41, February 14, 2012 (UTC)
I just reread the Terms of Use and you're right: It doesn't say anything about external data at all. There is however this article about Externally hosted images. That's the one that made me suspect I'm in a gray area here...

If the file is not licensed to upload to Wikia wikis, then it should be an external link. For files that wouldn't render well under Wikia's display restrictions, external linking is probably preferred. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 14 Feb 2012 10:36 AM Pacific
The license, yeah... Good point! I certainly don't have the right to slab CC on these files. But then again: This is a mod. Legally this is completely unexplored territory anyway. Modding happens almost entirely in that gray area. Modders routinely redistribute game files even though they technically do not have the right to do so. To my knowledge no game company has ever complained about this. Why would they?
But I digress... I'll take your advice and leave things as they are right now. Thanks for the input!
