I want to know how do you create a new category? I'm trying to improve my wiki but I don't know how. Sgt. Collins
You can create a new category by pressing the "Add category" at the bottom of the page, type the category name and press Enter, and hit Save. Once you add the category to the page, click the category and create its description page. 02:26, October 3, 2011 (UTC)
- You can also create a new category by creating a new page and naming it Category:Name (name being the name of the category). Drewlzoo(talk) 16:02, December 24, 2011 (UTC)
- Remember, though, a category isn't usefully created until it, too, is in a category itself. Think of categories as being branches on a tree. If you just create a category page with a description, you've created a twig that's on the ground, unconnected to the trunk of your "category tree". In order to connect that twig to the tree, you have to put it inside another — or, what's called a parent — category.
- Imagine you have a wiki about dogs. You create a category called category:Basset hounds. Unless you put category:Basset Hounds into category:Hounds; and unless category:Hounds is in category:Hunters, and unless category:Hunters is in category:Breeds, then you've got a broken category tree. The important thing about creating a category is that you put it in another category. The explanatory text is just window dressing that most editors never see. czechout ☎ ✍ fly tardis 17:18: Tue 17 Jan 2012
- FYI, here is a list of categories that most every Wikia wiki should have: w:c:starter:Special:Categories
- You can use these categories as the "trunk" of your category tree or start a new trunk.
- A good "trunk" category to start with is Category:Content. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 17 Jan 2012 3:30 PM Pacific
