Can someone explain to me what MediaWiki:Sitenotice_id is used for and what is a portal in a wiki? leviathan_89 14:48, 11 April, 2012 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Sitenotice id looks like something automatic, on this wiki it just says 4. Maybe it goes with namespaces? MediaWiki:Portal-url has the name of the community portal. On this wiki it says Project:Community Portal (which redirects to Community Central: Community Portal, and since this wiki does not have a community portal, it redirects to the home page). So, on any wiki, you can put [[{{MediaWiki:Portal-url}}]] to link to the community portal. Also, on a side note, you may want to take the white text out and make it black. You can't see it unless you select it. Iggyvolz 15:20, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
Iggyvolz, it's nice that you want to help, but please research the question before trying to answer it.
MediaWiki:Sitenotice id is used in conjunction with MediaWiki:Sitenotice to update the sitenotice in the Monobook skin. Whenever an administrator changes the sitenotice, he or she needs to increase the number in MediaWiki:Sitenotice id by one so that the notice will reappear for people who had previously dismissed it. See MW:Manual:Interface/Sitenotice. --Gardimuer { ʈalk } 15:31, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
Thank you! I still don't quite get what a portal is in a wiki... what's the difference between it and the main page? leviathan_89 15:41, 11 April, 2012 (UTC)
Portals are generally used as hubs for a specific topic, whereas the main page is often used for general information about the wiki and its topic. For instance, at the Call of Duty Wiki, we have a portal page for each game, such as c:cod:Portal:Call_of_Duty:_Black_Ops and c:cod:Portal:Call_of_Duty:_Modern_Warfare_3. Each portal has links that are related to their respective games, such as appearing characters and usable weapons. kerri (w) 16:27, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
I see, thank you. leviathan_89 17:05, 11 April, 2012 (UTC)
