I created a character list template for the bottom of my character article pages on The Elfen Lied Wiki. But anytime I want to alter it, I must proceed through every example of that template, as changing the original seems to do nothing for the others. What am I missing? The way editing a template works on MediaWiki is that when you've edited it, the software queues the pages that need to be updated into something called the "job queue". Over time, the software will go through and update those pages with the new code. You can manually purge the page yourself by adding ?action=purge to the end of the URL, or just wait a bit and the pages will automatically update in the background -- RandomTime 19:05, July 29, 2012 (UTC)
I have at times waited several days, even well past a week, and no update has occurred. Gojirob (talk) 20:24, July 29, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I see what you've done. You've substituted the text in the template, instead of transcluding the template. This means that the software doesn't check the template page at all, because the code for the template is on the page instead. To correct this, you need to edit the code on the page, to read {{List of Elfen Lied Characters}} instead of the template code on all the pages where you want this template to exist. I've done so on the page you linked as an example -- RandomTime 20:32, July 29, 2012 (UTC)
Thank You. Gojirob (talk) 21:44, July 29, 2012 (UTC)
While I've got you - I also have a page that refuses to leave the orphaned/lonely list. It is no less transcluded than the other pages in its group, but only it appears on this list. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Heh--I thought I knew the basics of Wikia after two or so years. Gojirob (talk) 02:27, July 30, 2012 (UTC)
Orphaned page usually means that no other page links to it, and there doesn't seem to be anything that links to the two pages that I see on that list: [1] [2]
To have them removed, you'd need to go to some other page, and put some links to these pages. --IK Talk 07:58, July 30, 2012 (UTC)
That's just it, though. With the exception of the first and last pages in the timeline group, each one is transcluded into both the previous page and the page after. The one that starts FW is just one I've overlooked. But the timeline one I've transcluded even beyond the two I mentioned. Yet as you said, it doesn't list. Gojirob (talk) 22:28, July 30, 2012 (UTC)
Can you provide an example of where they are transcluded? --IK Talk 16:29, July 31, 2012 (UTC)
The page in question is at least linked at the end of this page and at the beginning of this page. Gojirob (talk) 21:55, July 31, 2012 (UTC)
Maybe it doesn't count external links that you use. Why would you link like that in the first place?
I changed a link to an interwiki link, check it tomorrow if the orphan list cache gets updated. --IK Talk 22:24, July 31, 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. As to why I linked that way? These were entries on the series' timeline. I placed a link to the prior page at the start of each article and a link to the next at the end. It didn't seem to cause a problem for any article except that one. Gojirob (talk) 22:49, July 31, 2012 (UTC)
