The Top link for the Talk: version of a page seems to disappear for and page that has Comments enabled. However if you type it in or use a Template that has a Talk Link in works fine.

How do I get the normal Talk link back without removing Comments? Mpheyse (talk) 13:42, August 20, 2012 (UTC)

I think you can have only one of the two - talk page or comments. Final Cannon Dyskusja 14:12, August 20, 2012 (UTC)
That's correct, article comments use the talk namespace (ns-1), so the two are mutually exclusive. It's impossible to have both at the same time. You can turn comments on/off in Special:WikiFeatures. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 17:20 UTC, Mon, 20 August 2012
So then Why not overload the System Message for the "Comment" text where talk use to exist and simply include both.
For the Oasis Theme, change Oasis-page-header-comments From:
{{PLURAL:$1|Comment|Comments}}
To:
{{PLURAL:$1|Comment|Comments}} </a></li><li class="comments"><span class="commentsbubble"></span><a accesskey="t" title="Discussion about the content page" data-id="comment" href="{{localurl:{{TALKPAGENAME}}}}">Talk</code>
I don't put a number in the bubble, as that would be expensive, and not having it sets it apart from the comment part. Ending and starting a new </li> tag gets another vertical bar element between the two. The rest is the normal Oasis theme talk element. Different Themes would need different variations on this. Can this be made to work with WikiNavigation2.0? It doesn't seem to work with WikiNav2 -- ForestMonthZero (talk) 08:56, September 3, 2012 (UTC)
Not that I've figured out yet. The New system seems to squash all HTML tags without mercy. Making this much harder.Mpheyse (talk) 16:25, November 9, 2012 (UTC)

I personally don't like Comments because to my mind it has serious flaws:

  • It only allows replies to the original post — not to replies. Users of Admin status or higher can work around this by editing replies, but they shouldn't have to, and this kludge is not available to ordinary users.
  • It's not possible (so far as I know) to lock spammers out of the Comment system. In the Talk system, it's a simple matter of semi-protecting any talk page which is having such a problem.

For the above reasons, I've reverted the Fastmail wiki to the Talk system. — RobertATfm (talk) 12:10, August 28, 2012 (UTC)

Mpheyse: do you have a link to a working version of your suggested code, or is this just theory? I just tried your suggested code but what happened was all of it ended up as raw text inside of the comment button (rather than creating a new Talk button). I don't think MediaWiki:Oasis-page-header-comments is meant to handle HTML? 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 17:49 UTC, Sun, 02 September 2012
This WAS a working version As listed, But when the new Update hit, it mangles HTML tags preventing this from fixing this bug (which was not Fixed). I have not yet found a workaround. But I'm not yet giving up either.Mpheyse (talk) 16:25, November 9, 2012 (UTC)
