Technical Update: February 16, 2012

Our regular release was delayed this week, and we expect it to go out tomorrow. Here are some highlights on the changes that are planned.

  • We are enabling across Wikia a new feature called "New Window Links", which will allow users to designate links on their site to, upon being clicked, open up in a new window instead of forwarding the user along in the same window. Here's some examples of the syntax:
    • local links:

Technical Update: February 7, 2012

Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia. Keep in mind that our system updates happen every Wednesday, so we’re posting this on a Tuesday to give you advance notice. Also note that we change hundreds of tiny details every week, so these are just the highlights.

  • Vimeo videos can once again be uploaded using the Video Embed Tool. An API change on Vimeo's end had prevented our uploader from properly grabbing the necessary data.
  • Patrolled edits preferences seemed out of place in their previous placement under our new Special:Preferences system, so they will now have their own section in the "Under the Hood" tab.
  • Special:BookSources was highly outdated with 404 errors and malformed links being constructed by clicking on some of the links. We…

  • We're adding the ability to leave comments on blog posts and articles (where article comments are enabled) in our mobile skin. These comments will be for logged-out users only, until we release our mobile Log In tools (which are coming soon).

  • In the recent revamp of Special:Preferences, we the preferences for "follow pages I create" and "follow pages I move" ended up in a different tab from the other checkboxes to follow pages. These will all now be in the same place in the emai…

  • 3 Other Notable Changes
  • 4 Select Known Issues

  • Message Wall will be added to Wikia Labs later this week, and we'll provide an in-depth overview of its recent improvements at that time.

  • The Welcome Bot has been fixed. Here's an explanation of what happened: The bot was only greeting users once globally. That means if a user edited two wikis for the first time in two days, they would only be greeted on the first one they contributed to, not both.
  • Links to th…

  • We'll be adding full wiki navigation to the mobile skin, so that mobile readers can navigate your wiki via the menus you have created. This feature will be compatible with both the expanded (three-levels) wiki nav as well as the old style of navigation. It will also include the Random Page button.

  • Users in Firefox and Chrome should once again be able to vote and view the voting results of wiki polls.
  • The Editor should now load properly on the Opera browser.

Bugs on Wikia: Your Role in Making Wikia a Bug-Free Place

Hey All! I’m Tim "daNASCAT" Quievryn, and hopefully through my seven years of editing wikis and two and a half working here at Wikia, I've had a chance to chat most of you readers. For those who I haven't crossed paths with yet, I am a member of Community Support team and handle the technical needs of the Wikia community. This includes adjusting wiki settings, reviewing extensions, as well as diagnosing and helping fix bugs.

Helping squash bugs is the most intense but satisfying part of my job. Wikia does the very best job we can to prevent bugs from appearing on your wikis but considering how many features we are constantly tweaking, releasing, and testing, its inevitable that some will always get past us.

Even with all of the testing and a…

  • We're adding a "Read More" section to articles in the mobile skin, which will be similar to the "Read More" content you see at the bottom of articles in a full browser.

  • Our Game Guides app for Android was experiencing runtime errors.
  • Users in some locations were intermittently unable to load the editor.
  • The Theme Designer was not accepting images with a .jpeg file extension (normal .jpg files have been fine).

  • We're updating your User Preferences page so that items are grouped and l…

Technical Update: January 3, 2012

And.... we're back!

Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia. Keep in mind that our system updates happen every Wednesday, so we’re posting this on a Tuesday to give you advance notice.

This week's update is a bit light because of the holidays, but we'll be back in full force next week.

  • We're releasing some fixes to our new Mobile skin to remove some instances of overlapping content, and make it easier to view tables that are too wide for a screen. There may be some caching issues for the first 48 hours after this release, but they'll clear up if you purge the page. (To purge a page, just add ?action=purge to the end of any URL).
  • Links to article and blog comments in Special:WikiActivity were not leading the user directly to the comment, …

Technical Update: December 13, 2011 - Happy Holidays

Every year, we put feature development on hold for a few weeks in December and focus on planning for the new year. As a result, there will be no major releases until January. So in the meantime, please enjoy a sneak preview of our Wiki Community Holiday Card, created by our members. (The final card will be available soon, and we'll let you know where to find it!)

  • The transparency slider in Theme Designer was dislaying by default at 50%, instead of its actual default value of full opac…
