Hey everyone! We have a few updates since February 10, 2023. We’ll continue to update the editor community on bug fixes and product development updates bi-weekly!

    • 2.4 Other

  • Copy/Pasting issues in 2017 source mode. We've continued to investigate why copying and pasting text sometimes makes the editor extremely slow, especially when syntax highlighting is available. Through that investigation we've discovered that the issue isn't unique to Fandom, but rather an issue with core MediaWiki. We've reached out to our partners at the Wikimedia Foundation to understand what level of priority the issue is to fix. In the meantime, we're going to consider what if any solutions might…

MediaWiki 1.39 Technical Update: February 17, 2023

Hey everyone! We have an update about MediaWiki 1.39 we wanted to share ahead of next week’s Technical Update. We’ll update the editor community on bug fixes and product development updates bi-weekly and return to our regularly scheduled update on February 24, 2023!

  • This upgrade won’t change the design, our wikis will keep the same look as they had previously.
  • Most of the changes will happen under the hood, meaning they are not user-facing, but they will be important to ensure that everything is still working correctly.
  • The migrations are done in different batches, starting with 3-4 wikis without complex extensions, and adding more traffic, content, and extensions progressively in the subsequent batches.
  • One week before migration, a banner wil…

In our last update, we told you about how we’d been finalizing our plans for 2023. The good news is that, for the most part, we’re just about done and we now have a 2023 roadmap! We’ll share more over the coming weeks and months about what we have planned, so stay tuned for more information.

Technical Updates: January 13, 2023

Welcome to 2023! Hopefully you all had a relaxing holiday season and are headed into a great new year. I for one am excited to share this first Technical Update for the new year and re-kick off our bi-weekly series where we provide updates on bugs that are being worked on and new features that are being developed. This is our first one since December 16, 2022, and we’ll dive into the most recent updates in just a moment.

Before we get started, I wanted to make sure we shared that we’ll have more information about where we’re going in 2023 soon. That’s because we’re taking January to still finalize our full year plan, so we’re not quite ready to announce any major themes for the year yet. Certain things we already talked about like the upgra…

    • 3.3 Mobile Editing
    • 3.4 FanCentral
  • 4 Platform

2022 is coming to a close, and that means that this is our final Technical Update of 2022. We don’t like to release code too close to the holiday break, since there will be fewer people around to help deal with any potential bugs or code release issues, so we have officially entered into what we call a code freeze. That means we will not be releasing any code until after New Years, when we return to “the office” on January 3rd, t…

Special Technical Updates: October 28, 2022

Happy Friday!

I know, I know - Technical Updates are supposed to be every other Friday, and we just did one a week ago, so what gives? Well, we decided to do one today because earlier this week, mobile theming became available to admins to begin opting in to. That means that they can now apply their wiki’s desktop theme to mobile. That’s a big deal! We promised we’d build mobile theming capabilities at Community Connect back in May, and we’re thrilled to make good on that and provide that option.

So the bug-related section of this blog will be specifically about mobile theming, what the community caught as bugs, and what we’ve been fixing and will be fixing. We’ll have our regular, broader bug updates next week, but this week we’ll also give…
