Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia. Keep in mind that our system updates happen every Wednesday, so we’re posting this on a Tuesday to give you advance notice. Also note that we change hundreds of tiny details every week, so these are just the highlights.

    • LyricWiki mobile app is being released to the iTunes App Store this week. We've also released updates for both Game Guides and LyricWiki mobile apps.

    • We're continuing to fix bugs with the Editor Redesign (available for preview in Wikia Labs). This week, we've improved support for users with JS disabled, fixed a glitch with the "Preview mode" notice, and fixed an issue with edit conflicts. The missing "Back to Page" link will also start displaying again.
    • Navigation was having issu…

    • Chat is on its final week of pre-launch testing. We're putting the finishing touches on our latest big feature (private messages!) and will be launching Chat to Wikia Labs SOON™*.

    • The Login popup link wasn't working properly on several wikis.
    • Non-HTML emails for wiki founders were displaying

    • The new visual editor just went live Wikia Labs! This is a temporary adjustment phase that will allow wikis to turn it on and off as needed for at least a couple of weeks, until it becomes our new permanent editor. See our blog post, Try the New Wikia Editor, for more information.

    • Duplicate links were appearing in "Followed Pages" lists when a user commented on an article.
    • We fixed a bunch of bugs on the new content editor in preparation for the Wikia Labs launch. These include s…

    • The redesigned Visual Editor is LIVE on our Community Test Wiki (and a few other beta test wikis) for you to explore. Once it's cleared for broader release, it will go live to Wikia Labs for any wiki to turn on or off as a demo. This will only be a temporary phase (but it will last at least a few weeks) before we enable this as the editing mode for all wikis. If you see any bugs or have general feedback on the demo for the development team please leave a comment over here.

    • We experienced some Javascript problems in the Rich Text Editor in IE which have been fixed.
    • Users who included Special:CreatePage in their toolbar were experiencing a Javascript error that kept setting headers to edit mode. This has been resolved.

    • Last week we mentioned the visual editor reskin will going live to test wikis soon. This was delayed to stabilize a few important features (and we have a new QA staff member working on it as we speak!). We'll post an update here as soo…

    • We've updated the emails that wiki founders receive when they create a new wiki, and when there is activity on the wikis they've created. Part of this update involves creating a new set of email options for wiki founders under Preferences. This time, these preferences are wiki-specific, and you'll have more granular control over which emails you want to receive.
    • We plan to release the redesign of our visual editor to a few select test wikis later this week, including to Communit…

    • We'll be running an A/B test on a new AJAX-based style of page load. This change will create a smoother and faster browsing experience, with less of a delay on page loads. The test will affect 3% of logged-in users.
    • Wikia Labs will be going live to all wikis soon. This is a tool that allows admins to turn experimental features on and off for their wikis. There are no new features in Wikia Labs yet, but this change will make it possible for us to enable Chat for all wikis in a fe…

Hello, Wikians! Can you guess what happened in our office last week? Sure, we got new bean bags... but the bigger news is that our engineers and server admins met for the Wikia Tech All Hands event.

In an unprecedented concentration of techiness, the Wikia Technical Team gathered for a week-long summit at our development center in Poznań, Poland. Here are some highlights from the event:

If you’ve ever tried to read a handwritten note, you know how difficult it can be to decipher another person’s scribbling. There’s a similar problem with codes — when a bunch of different people code, the results can be messy and hard to follow. At All Hands, we worked on a method to streamline writing code, which will hopefully result in a better, faster, an…

    • This week, we're rolling out the first phase of our "Auto Wiki Adopt" feature. This will allow active users to adopt wikis with inactive admins without needing to receive manual approval from a staff member (though the criteria will still be similar to what it is now). The feature will be activated on any new English wikis created after Wednesday, May 18th. It will be expanded to existing wikis when our testing shows that the feature is stable.
    • A few key improvements are being r…

As we mentioned in our post last week, this week our Engineering team is having its annual "all-hands" meetup. During the meetup the team will collaborate on special projects, share best practices, and explore new techniques. In order to stay on schedule for their meetup, our Engineering Team will not be pushing out any new code this week. The next scheduled release will the following week on Wednesday, May 18th. As usual, if a critical bug pops anytime between now and then, it will be fixed and released as soon as possible.

In the interim, there are a few notable bugs that have appeared in the last week that we are aware of:

    • Gallery logic is slightly deforming borders, boxes, and thumbs for images with unusual sizing (i.e. sizing an image …
