Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia. Keep in mind that our system updates happen every Wednesday, so we’re posting this on a Tuesday to give you advance notice. Also note that we change hundreds of tiny details every week, so these are just the highlights.

    • This week, we're rolling out the first phase of our "Auto Wiki Adopt" feature. This will allow active users to adopt wikis with inactive admins without needing to receive manual approval from a staff member (though the criteria will still be similar to what it is now). The feature will be activated on any new English wikis created after Wednesday, May 18th. It will be expanded to existing wikis when our testing shows that the feature is stable.
    • A few key improvements are being r…

As we mentioned in our post last week, this week our Engineering team is having its annual "all-hands" meetup. During the meetup the team will collaborate on special projects, share best practices, and explore new techniques. In order to stay on schedule for their meetup, our Engineering Team will not be pushing out any new code this week. The next scheduled release will the following week on Wednesday, May 18th. As usual, if a critical bug pops anytime between now and then, it will be fixed and released as soon as possible.

In the interim, there are a few notable bugs that have appeared in the last week that we are aware of:

    • Gallery logic is slightly deforming borders, boxes, and thumbs for images with unusual sizing (i.e. sizing an image …

    • The "member since" line on user profiles was giving out joined dates for users who had never edited that wiki. We have been in the process of removing this confusing line, and it will be fully removed in those situations by the end of this week.
    • tags weren't working (sorry -- we know we said this was fixed last week. The fix will be visible this week instead).
    • There were a few instances last week where AJAX-based tools didn't work properly, or strange code appeared on pages. The…

    • We experienced some major caching glitches that prevented the Edit window from loading properly for some users.
    • Some of the buttons in the Gallery builder were improperly aligned.
    • updated: Today's update raised the following new issues:
    • The "h" keyboard shortcut for history isn't working. Will be fixed.
    • The "Recent Changes" link disappeared from Wiki Activity. Will be fixed. (Update: Now fixed.)

Two weeks ago, we did a round of A/B testing on a small percentage of anonymous users with very promising results. We found that when we removed the grey bar below the article title, users clicked the "Edit" button at the top of a page a whopping 11% more often. We're excited about what this means for ease of use and increased activity, and will be rolling out this change to all wikis this week. Here's what the change looks like...

    What you see now:

What it will look like after the change:

    • A "Page History" link will be added to the drop-down menu attached to the Edit button.
    • The grey bar will be removed. This also means:
      • The "read more" links will be removed.
      • The "Edited by [name]" menu will be removed.

On most wikis, this will mean a minor layout…

    • We had a series of issues with site caching last week, which created a mix of temporary glitches in the layout (like the image uploader window having weird alignment). These should all be resolved now.
    • We fixed some issues with the Special:Statistics page, most notably the issue with "active users" showing as "-1".
    • Facebook Connect preferences were occasionally not being recognized by our "pushing" system that determines whether or not an action should go on a user's Facebook pro…

    • Our Help Wiki's Search tool now uses Google search. This is just an experiment to evaluate whether it improves search quality and user experience. We do not plan to release this on any other wikis anytime soon.

    • Image gallery editing wasn't working in Internet Explorer for a few days.
    • Special:WikiStats wasn't showing March statistics
    • Search results pages were sending people to an anchor mid-way down the page rather than displaying the top of the page.

    • A new landing page that features our mobile products is scheduled for release later this week.
    • We’re launching a new extension for managing Lyric Wiki’s Song of the Day. This is is an experimental feature that we may be able to make use of later for other kinds of content.

    • Image cache stopped working properly, and didn’t recognize new versions of images when uploaded.
    • User Pages have been showing an inaccurate “Member Since” date on wikis where user has not edited.

    • Going forward, all new English wiki will have Page Layout Builder enabled, and new entertainment wikis will have some starter layouts in the system. (Note: this change may go live today.)

    • When leaving a message on a Talk page, the “Subject/Headline” field now appears above the message, rather than below it. (Fix is already live.)
    • Page errors were displaying in IE9.
    • Image placeholders stopped allowing users to upload new images.

This is a quiet week with no new features to report. With that in mind, our engineers were able to instead focus on bugs of all shapes and sizes. Major bugs fixed are detailed below as always.

    • The email notification triggered by user rights changes had a few glitches.
    • A popup with the message, “Thanks for your edit. Can you improve any of these related articles?” was displaying for some users unnecessarily.
    • Theme Designer preview mode wasn’t working consistently.

    • We're testing a n…
