Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia. Keep in mind that our system updates happen every Wednesday, so we’re posting this on a Tuesday to give you advance notice. Also note that we change hundreds of tiny details every week, so these are just the highlights.

It's a relatively quiet week this week...

    • Blog post listings were not updating with new posts within the usual cache time.
    • The "restore" button will once again appear when working with your favorite wikis list for your profile header.

    • The "Restore Edit" feature will be removed for this week while we try to diagnose and improve visual editor load time issues.
    • As a reminder, video files are in the process of being migrated to new URLs. For more detail, see our blog post.
    • Thanks to th…

    • We are now able to offer a minor but interesting new feature to wikis upon request. It is called "CategoryIntersection" and allows users to see easily a list of pages that belong to multiple categories. You can play with it here on LyricWiki. If your wiki would like to have it enabled, please request it via Special:Contact.

    • Imagemaps using external links will no longer throw errors that prevent the imagemaps from rendering.
    • Chrome users who were forced to log in after attempting…

    • The mobile version of our site will now support logging in. At the moment, all you can do while logged in is leave comments under your username (well, that and log out...), but more exciting features are coming soon!
    • We're adding our new Mini Editor (which we also released last week for Message Wall) to Article Comments and Blog Comments. It will be available on Community Test and a few other wikis on Wednesday, and we'll roll it out to all English wikis soon after. The Mini Ed…

Over the past few months our technical team has been busy at work refactoring videos on Wikia. What does that mean exactly? Refactoring is a technical process that changed the underlying code for videos so that it is more MediaWiki friendly. The current way we handle videos was a custom namespace hack which doesn’t work well with MediaWiki. It is not searchable, has bad file history and just all around a bit clunky.

The refactoring has resulted in videos now being seen by MediaWiki as “files”. This means they will be part of the file namespace, and so are now searchable and have more detailed file pages that can be integrated into image display tools (galleries, slideshow, etc). The videos will still automatically receive a videos category …

    • We're releasing a lightweight editor for Message Wall that includes both a Visual Mode and a Source Mode. (The mode will match whichever mode you use in your regular page editing.) Both modes add buttons for Bold, Italics, Link, Photo, Video. You'll be able to test this editor on Community Test on Wednesday, and it will be released to all English Wikis with Message Wall enabled soon after.

    • Emoticons will once again work in chat.
    • Problems with changes to a wiki's CSS and JS file n…

    • Special Pages began updating again last Thursday thanks to some quick work by our techs. All SpecialPages should now have caught up and data should once again be fresh.
    • We have also fixed some issues to our wiki search from February, including all cases where search for a select few wikis was returning no results.
    • In Article and Blog Comments, the field for writing a new reply will now close after you submit a reply.
    • Logging in while editing images will no longer trigger a blank w…

    Technical Update: Feb 28, 2012

    • Our Mobile pages will now include quick links to allow for sharing on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, and Email.

Also, as we had previously announced, this will go live this week:

    • We're updating our Log In and Sign Up forms, and we'll release the changes to Community Central (and a few other wikis) this week for testing (with a release across all English wikis shortly to follow). More info coming soon in a full blog post.

    • Anonymous users will once again get notifications for messa…

Our regular release was delayed this week, and we expect it to go out tomorrow. Here are some highlights on the changes that are planned.

    • We are enabling across Wikia a new feature called "New Window Links", which will allow users to designate links on their site to, upon being clicked, open up in a new window instead of forwarding the user along in the same window. Here's some examples of the syntax:
      • local links:

    • Vimeo videos can once again be uploaded using the Video Embed Tool. An API change on Vimeo's end had prevented our uploader from properly grabbing the necessary data.
    • Patrolled edits preferences seemed out of place in their previous placement under our new Special:Preferences system, so they will now have their own section in the "Under the Hood" tab.
    • Special:BookSources was highly outdated with 404 errors and malformed links being constructed by clicking on some of the links. We…

    • We're adding the ability to leave comments on blog posts and articles (where article comments are enabled) in our mobile skin. These comments will be for logged-out users only, until we release our mobile Log In tools (which are coming soon).

    • In the recent revamp of Special:Preferences, we the preferences for "follow pages I create" and "follow pages I move" ended up in a different tab from the other checkboxes to follow pages. These will all now be in the same place in the emai…
