Valentine's Day - Share the Love

    February 13, 2012 by Xean

It's that time again; time for candy and flowers and hearts, but more importantly it's time to tell the people you care about that you're thinking of them and that you appreciate them.

In honor of tomorrow's lovely holiday we wanted to give you a chance to share your love with the rest of Wikia. Which wikis do you love and why, which wikians have been amazing and deserve to be showered with love and adoration, and which wikis are decking themselves out in hearts and flowers to celebrate? Please tell us below!

We know there are a lot of non-wikians on your list too, so we made an e-candy-gram you can easily send out and share via Facebook and Twitter. Remember tomorrow is the day to share the love, so get your candy gram ready today for your…

Last December all Wikia employees participated in our first-ever "Wikia Day" -- no meetings, no emails, no work -- just editing wikis all day long. It's a chance for us to get more familiar with the nooks and crannies of our website, root out pesky bugs, and to fall in love with wikis all over again.

December's Wikia Day was such a rip-roaring success that we decided to make it a recurring tradition. Last Friday we celebrated Wikia Day #2! Here are some highlights:

We're all quite excited with what we accomplished in just one day. In our office we have folks with all levels of wiki experience from Sannse (who made several hundreds of edits without breaking a sweat) to wiki newbie Patricia, who knocked out an awesome main page for the new Th…

    Get your wiki noticed

    February 9, 2012 by Nblonkenfeld

Hey there, I'm the social media guy here at @Wikia (or Nathan Blonkenfeld out in the real world)! I head up our Social Media Strategy: I help plan marketing events, and assist our Category Managers with giveaways. I also post to Wikia's Official Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google+ accounts. You'll see me tweeting on @Wikia, @WikiaGames and @WikiaEntYep, they're all the same person but with lots of different info!

I also work closely with the Community Team here at Wikia to assist with customer service in the Facebook, Google+ and Twitter Sphere. If you've ever asked for help from @Wikia or left a comment on FacebookI'm the guy who reads it, alerts the teams and tries to handle issues lightening fast for you.

But that's not all I do here! I…

    Grammys Countdown

    January 30, 2012 by Bchwood

Did you know that Adele has a dachshund she named Louie after he started howling to a Louie Armstrong song? Or that it’s rumored Lady Gaga will be performing both the opening and closing songs at the 54th Grammys? Or that Alexandre Desplat is up for a Grammy for his Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 score?

Pretty cool stuff, right? We definitely think so, and it’s all information that Wikia’s music communities have been busy chronicling. So to make sure YOU know all about the amazing efforts of our rapidly growing music wikis, we’re hosting a Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night.

Starting this Wednesday, February 1st on the Music Wiki, we’re counting down the 12 remaining days to the Grammys in many ways. Each day we'll be bringing y…

As many of you know, we’ve been working on Message Wall — a new alternative to User Talk Pages that lets you have a public conversation in a fast, powerful, and organized way. During the early testing phase, you gave us boatloads of feedback that influenced our development process. Today, we’re excited to announce that thanks to you, we’ve made many improvements to Message Wall, and it’s now available in Labs. Your admins can enable it on your wiki whenever they wish!

Admins can enable or disable it. Message Wall is now a Labs product, which admins can turn it on or off via Special:WikiFeatures. “Labs” means that it’s still in beta, and we’re looking forward to improving it as we learn more about how it’s used. It might not be in Labs forev…

You Know You're a Wikian If

    January 23, 2012 by Xean

We all know there are certain things that make a wikian a wikian - things that the rest of the world doesn't really understand but that show our fellow wikian's we're one of them. Some of them are actions we take, ways we think, or words we say but they are all uniquely wikian. So what are they?

You know you're a wikian if....

    1. You try to edit just about every post, page or photo you see on the web
    2. You get mad when a website doesn't show its edit history
    3. You try to type in a url and automatically add .wikia.com every time
    4. You see a sad looking wiki and can't help trying to improve it
    5. You watch a show/movie and hope there's a wiki for it
    6. You play a video game and just know there's a wiki for it
    7. Someone is talking about something and you go "there's…

Everyday we have new users joining Wikia who are excited to share their knowledge and get involved in the many communities we have here — which is awesome! But let's face it, if you aren't already familiar with wiki editing — building a wiki can be a little daunting for your everyday newbie. We'd like to make building and creating wikis less difficult for new users.

As the Community Manager of Founder Experience, I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can help newbie founders and make their lives easier here at Wikia. Everyday, I talk to our users about how we can make this happen and see what they think. Back in October I had a conversation with Cook Me Plox from the RuneScape wiki about this very issue: helping newbies. He mentioned …

I'm sure all of you have been reading about SOPA and PIPA in the news. While SOPA -- the bill in the US House of Representatives -- has gotten most of the attention, it's sister legislation, PIPA -- the bill in the US Senate -- represents a similar approach. These bills are driven by the content industry and are aimed at combating online piracy, protecting intellectual property rights of copyright holders and protecting jobs that are claimed to be affected. The content industry's key objective with this proposed legislation is to stop foreign companies who make millions of dollars on the backs of unlicensed content or counterfeit goods. While we absolutely support the idea of reducing intellectual property theft, SOPA and PIPA in their cur…

    Staff Blog in 2012

January 12, 2012 by Sarah Manley

    Hi all,

Part of my role here at Wikia is to help organize and manage the staff blog. As 2012 is upon us, I have been thinking a lot about what new posts we can bring to the blog that will be fun, interesting and enjoyable for the community. One of the great things about the Wikia blog is that you as readers get to comment, join in and have a larger conversation with us. We want to keep this conversation going.

In 2011 we started a number of blog post series, including featured wikian, weekly technical updates and founder & admin advice. We want to continue with these kinds of features in 2012, as well as add new and interesting content to the blog.

Yesterday our team got together to brainstorm new and interesting topics. Here are some of the …

    DaNASCAT

Hey All! I’m Tim "daNASCAT" Quievryn, and hopefully through my seven years of editing wikis and two and a half working here at Wikia, I've had a chance to chat most of you readers. For those who I haven't crossed paths with yet, I am a member of Community Support team and handle the technical needs of the Wikia community. This includes adjusting wiki settings, reviewing extensions, as well as diagnosing and helping fix bugs.

Helping squash bugs is the most intense but satisfying part of my job. Wikia does the very best job we can to prevent bugs from appearing on your wikis but considering how many features we are constantly tweaking, releasing, and testing, its inevitable that some will always get past us.

Even with all of the testing and a…
