As many of you know, we’ve been working on Message Wall — a new alternative to User Talk Pages that lets you have a public conversation in a fast, powerful, and organized way. During the early testing phase, you gave us boatloads of feedback that influenced our development process. Today, we’re excited to announce that thanks to you, we’ve made many improvements to Message Wall, and it’s now available in Labs. Your admins can enable it on your wiki whenever they wish!
Admins can enable or disable it. Message Wall is now a Labs product, which admins can turn it on or off via Special:WikiFeatures. “Labs” means that it’s still in beta, and we’re looking forward to improving it as we learn more about how it’s used. It might not be in Labs forev…

We all know there are certain things that make a wikian a wikian - things that the rest of the world doesn't really understand but that show our fellow wikian's we're one of them. Some of them are actions we take, ways we think, or words we say but they are all uniquely wikian. So what are they?
You know you're a wikian if....
- You try to edit just about every post, page or photo you see on the web
- You get mad when a website doesn't show its edit history
- You try to type in a url and automatically add .wikia.com every time
- You see a sad looking wiki and can't help trying to improve it
- You watch a show/movie and hope there's a wiki for it
- You play a video game and just know there's a wiki for it
- Someone is talking about something and you go "there's…

Everyday we have new users joining Wikia who are excited to share their knowledge and get involved in the many communities we have here — which is awesome! But let's face it, if you aren't already familiar with wiki editing — building a wiki can be a little daunting for your everyday newbie. We'd like to make building and creating wikis less difficult for new users.
As the Community Manager of Founder Experience, I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can help newbie founders and make their lives easier here at Wikia. Everyday, I talk to our users about how we can make this happen and see what they think. Back in October I had a conversation with Cook Me Plox from the RuneScape wiki about this very issue: helping newbies. He mentioned …

I'm sure all of you have been reading about SOPA and PIPA in the news. While SOPA -- the bill in the US House of Representatives -- has gotten most of the attention, it's sister legislation, PIPA -- the bill in the US Senate -- represents a similar approach. These bills are driven by the content industry and are aimed at combating online piracy, protecting intellectual property rights of copyright holders and protecting jobs that are claimed to be affected. The content industry's key objective with this proposed legislation is to stop foreign companies who make millions of dollars on the backs of unlicensed content or counterfeit goods. While we absolutely support the idea of reducing intellectual property theft, SOPA and PIPA in their cur…

Hi all,
Part of my role here at Wikia is to help organize and manage the staff blog. As 2012 is upon us, I have been thinking a lot about what new posts we can bring to the blog that will be fun, interesting and enjoyable for the community. One of the great things about the Wikia blog is that you as readers get to comment, join in and have a larger conversation with us. We want to keep this conversation going.
In 2011 we started a number of blog post series, including featured wikian, weekly technical updates and founder & admin advice. We want to continue with these kinds of features in 2012, as well as add new and interesting content to the blog.
Yesterday our team got together to brainstorm new and interesting topics. Here are some of the …

Hey All! I’m Tim "daNASCAT" Quievryn, and hopefully through my seven years of editing wikis and two and a half working here at Wikia, I've had a chance to chat most of you readers. For those who I haven't crossed paths with yet, I am a member of Community Support team and handle the technical needs of the Wikia community. This includes adjusting wiki settings, reviewing extensions, as well as diagnosing and helping fix bugs.
Helping squash bugs is the most intense but satisfying part of my job. Wikia does the very best job we can to prevent bugs from appearing on your wikis but considering how many features we are constantly tweaking, releasing, and testing, its inevitable that some will always get past us.
Even with all of the testing and a…

Welcome to the first 2012 installment of our Featured Wikian blog series featuring The 888th Avatar!
Wikia: Tell us a little bit about yourself
- The_888th_Avatar: I’m just a teenager who’s happy to have finally completed high school! This year, I plan to begin a five-year double degree in Arts and Law, which could really take me anywhere. I’m also a Chinese Australian who takes great interest in technology, travel, history and politics. My favorite pastime is writing, which I sometimes take very unconventional approaches to – much to the frustration of many of my former teachers.
Wikia: How did you first discover Wikia and which wikis do you spend the most time on?
- The_888th_Avatar: I began following Avatar: The Last Airbender after I became immer…

I'm happy to announce to our community that Wikia will be moving our 500+ domains from GoDaddy due to their support for SOPA legislation now working its way through the United States House of Representatives.
If you're familiar with the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), you'll understand how flawed the legislation is, and how negative it could be for the entire Wikia community. For those of you who have not heard of SOPA or its sister bill Protect-IP Act (PIPA) currently in the United States Senate please take a look at the IP Law Wiki (http://iplaw.wikia.com/) -- it's a good place to get educated. If laws like SOPA or PIPA were to be actually passed, it is likely that sites with extensive user generated content like Wikia, Wikipedia, YouTub…

Hey Wikians!
In the past year or so, our staff has been growing substantially and many work in roles you may never see. Everyone from HR to designers to marketing to sales and, of course, our new CEO.
So, what are we going to do about it?
This Friday, December 16, the Wikia staff will be spending the entire work day on Wikia - we’ll be contributing, editing and creating new wikis in this first Wikia Day.
The goal is to have everyone on staff gain more experience using Wikia from all fronts.
We’re going to hold staff contests in the following areas:
- Best looking new wikis (for those created during Wikia Day)
- Most ambitious or well traveled (for those staff who clean up or edit across lots of wikis)
- Most bugs found or reported
- And a secret award we’…
