Please read this policy before requesting a new Wikia.
Wikia's goal is to support large communities who want to work together on projects focused around specific topics.
However, not every wiki proposal meets Wikia's goals. To have the best chance of getting your idea accepted, ask yourself these questions.
Does the wiki already exist?
Wikia does not create multiple wikis about a single topic.
A duplication of an existing wiki topic is by far the most common reason that a wiki request will be turned down. Wikis are about people working together to build something greater than they could do alone. Please check the list of existing Wikia or use the search box to find out if we already have a place for your contributions.
Advantages:
- Together there's more chance of reaching a critical mass of active contributors needed to sustain a wiki over time
- New ideas can use infrastructure - such as templates, infoboxes, and categories - of established Wikia
- Integrating at the start can be a lot easier than merging later
- Your ideas can enliven or provide new direction to a faltering wiki, if you can present them with kindness and tact
Wikia also does not duplicate Wikimedia projects, so we encourage you to join Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects in your language if you are interested in general reference works.
Will the wiki have free content?
The content of Wikia sites is licensed under the GFDL, a free content licence. This means the information can be reused, not only in other Wikia sites, but by anyone. This is very important to our goal of increasing the amount of free content in the world, but isn't always what creators are looking for when searching for a wiki host. Please be sure you understand this license.
Although some fair use material may be included in wikis, Wikia aims to be a repository of free content, so any wiki which would be primarily made up of fair use material rather than GFDL material is not permitted. For example, wikis which aim to collect lyrics, comics, or other copyrighted works are not allowed.
Do you agree with Wikia's terms of use?
You must agree:
- to all of our terms of use.
- that the content of the wiki will be licensed under the GFDL.
- that the wiki will be open to the public to edit. (see protection)
- that the wiki will be run as a community project. Wikia are not owned by their founders. Consensus and cooperation should be the primary means for organizing a wiki.
- not to allow prohibited content on the wiki.
You may not request a Wikia if you are banned on any other wiki.
All requests received are subject to rejection or alteration. It is possible the requested name or title for the wiki may be changed before or after the wiki is created.
Wikis which have no content, or remain inactive, or have a large overlap with another Wikia may be merged with another project, locked from editing, or closed completely. In the case of complete closure of wikis that previously had content, the database of content would be made available for download. See closed Wikia for further details.
