From today we have "A Wikia wiki" text added for every wiki in site titles. It's for optimalization Google serarching and for better recognizing Wikia in Google. Personally, I don't like it for three reasons: it can't be turned off (eg. through MediaWiki:Sitetitle), it can't be translated into other languages (yeah, ok, "Wikia" and "wiki" are known in lot of languages) and every sysop can add to sitetitle if he want, but I haven't seen before that anybody done this. The first and second thing can be customizated in the future. So, how do you like this add to site title and would you want to have it customizable? I'm not asking offcially, just private. This is currently an experiment in google indexing, I believe. It was much easier to insert it into the skin rather than try to create a new message or modify the Sitetitle message globally.
However, It might be possible and desirable to insert this into MediaWiki:Sitetitle (and translations) at some future point, with ' - Wikia' instead of 'A Wikia wiki' for non-english as the default (I would prefer that for all, personally ^_^). --Splarka (talk) 23:14, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
If we're trying to improve the indexing of Wikia then why not try out something such as the Google Sitemap Extension to improve the indexing. A default Wikia Article could be placed on all new Wikia and that would automatically become part of the Sitemap. You could even do a little alteration to force that particular article to have higher priority than others when it is generated. Dantman (Talk) 01:52, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
I kinda dislike the tone - as if Wikia "owns" the wiki, rather than just hosting it. Perhaps "served by Wikia"? --GreenReaper(talk) 21:58, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Why not "hosted by Wikia" in that case. It's to the point, descriptive, not confusing, and sound's better. Dantman (Talk) 00:32, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
As Splarka said, we need to move it to MediaWiki:Sitetitle so it's customizable per wiki. It looks rather silly at the moment in some cases, like on our home page where it says "Wikia - Wikia - A Wikia wiki". :) What would people think of it saying "A free wiki from Wikia", as the Google one does? Actually, we had a couple of choices and I tried to pick one that I thought didn't sound like we were trying to claim credit for it but just that there was an association with Wikia. :) (sorry). The above comments are correct...we were just trying something out to see if Google picks up more on "wiki" and "Wikia" for SEO. We already have sitemaps enabled, but that has a different effect (and we had to go to the Google sitemap team directly on that one because their interface didn't allow us to enter the locations of all the sitemaps... so they took a list from us to import directly so they would see them all). This has more to do with word association and we're just trying to see if it makes any difference in Google at all. It will definitely be put in MediaWiki:Sitetitle, etc., but this was just a test. And this definitely isn't about trying to present an image like we own anything... we know better than that. :) If you have better suggestions, we're always open to them..... This feature isn't very good. My wiki is in finnish, and it looks ridiculous - English text in the title of finnish wiki! This feature should really be customizable. --Nipsu 13:29, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Agree, it should be customizable for all non-English Wikia (maybe?), like MediaWiki:Awikiawiki or something. Or international users could send in translations. Smiddle 19:39, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Swedish is "En Wikiawiki" by the way. Smiddle 19:40, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

It seems that the 'A Wikia wiki' thing has been removed. --Leon (talk) 19:18, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

It has, it was mostly for SEO testing. It will apparently be re-added globally in MediaWiki:Pagetitle as the default (so it will not overwrite any site that already has a custom message there). --Splarka (talk) 23:13, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
