Hi all. I have finally been signed up to Google analytics after a long wait in the queue. Has anyone had any experience of using them to track activity on a wiki. How /where did you put the text? Is it worth the effort of putting the text on more than a few pages? Lifeartist 22:43, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
If you mail the code to Jason at technical@wikia.com he can put it in all your pages in the right place. I don't think it's actually possible to do it from the editing interface - not effectively anyway. Once it's on, it works really well.. a very useful tool -- sannse (talk) 11:55, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks very much Sannse just what I needed to know Lifeartist 12:07, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
- Has anyone had useful experience of Google analytic. mine is up and running now that Jason has put the code on all the pages. How have you used it, any tips, Lifeartist 22:15, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi there! We have used Analytics extensively on WikiFur. The most useful thing to us is the Marketing Optimization/Visitor Segment Performance/Referring source which tells you what site visitors are coming from. You can also click the red button, and Cross-segment performance/Content (or Keyword for search engines) and find out what page they were coming from.
- Other uses are to figure out your web browser demographics to decide what size to design your front page for, and looking for the Top Content to see what pages are getting the information. Entrance bounce rates can help you figure out what pages aren't enticing enough to users. You can see where users go - for example, we saw that people tended to click on images, so we tried to put some image descriptions and links in the descriptions.
- Examples of particularly good uses:
- We caught people going to a specific page via a search engine and put a "hey, there's other pages on here, visit them!" template on there
- We can check all the places people are talking about WikiFur and make an appropriate response, perhaps participating in discussion of the site
- We can see that traffic is going up or down (for example, we saw that google traffic was going down, and figured out it was because pages were no longer being indexed - and now it's going up, because they are being indexed again).
- Examples of particularly good uses:
- Hope this helps! Drop me a note if you need more info. --GreenReaper(talk) 23:01, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks Greenreaper, thats given me some ideas of where to go with it. Any other tips and experiences of GA out there? I really recommend it as Jason sets it up and its worth it just for the updating map of the world showing where your visitors come from, but there's a lot more besidesLifeartist 21:24, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Is this still doable?
I asked about this a couple of months ago and was told it was no longer being offered. Anyone know the status of that? Or any alternative tools? Tim Donahey 01:38, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
- yes, iirc it's possible to do it by inserting the google analytics code into the MediaWiki:Copyright page content --Markie 15:46, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- Nope, I added the tracking code to that page, but Google isn't detecting it. What am I missing here? Tim Donahey 03:31, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
