Since Staff simply don't understand the sheer number of us who do not want Message Wall to replace talkpages, I've set up this page to show them just how many of their users are against the change. This isn't a vote, and it's not really a petition. It's merely a list of users who don't (or do) want this feature to replace talkpages.

Simply sign your name in the appropriate section to show your opinion. Only leave comments in the comment section, as it just makes the list messy otherwise.

  26. I am not pleased with having to be forced to use a social networking site-esque user talk model. It should stay just as it is. And I don't think we need to test this to see what it's like, a lot of us use facebook and blogs on Wikia, this is a mix of the two, not that either are bad, but the mix does not belong on user talk pages. --Callofduty4 17:05, September 27, 2011 (UTC)

  29. This defeats the purpose of a WIKI. This is not Facebook. It's a WIKI. What Staff don't see is that 99.7% hate this godawful feature and will refuse to use it. This means when it does get implemented, communication between users will cease ENTIRELY. Total chaos across the whole of Wikia. And when that happens, I'll be there to remind them "I told you so." 3. This is ridiculous. Wikia is Wikia and Facebook is Facebook. Wikia is for writing articles, not for being a cheap imitation of Facebook, which is primarily a social networking site. If you want to chat with friends, YOU USE FACEBOOK. Now, talking to people on Wikia is fine, as long as it relates to what is going on at the Wikis. But this is ridiculous. There was nothing wrong with our Talk Pages, and there really is no need to replace them simply to rip off giant sites like Facebook. Tomix2010

  22. This is a typical case of Wikia ignoring the people who give it money. In the real world, this ignorance is similar to a company ignoring its investors. What do you think happens? The investors are outraged, and sell their stock and potentially boycott the company's products. Eventually, the company will probably go out of business because of the lack of income if something is not done to amend the problem and get the customers back. Its not far off for Wikia if they continue to ignore the community's opinion in these upgrades to the skin. The simple solution would be to make it optional for wikias to enable or disable, and just implement it that way. But, hey, what do we know? We're mere users. -Rainbow Dash Rainbow_Dash.png (Talk) (Contribs) 23:51, October 9, 2011 (UTC)

Wiki's are not Twitter, they are not Facebook. I find it unfair that Wikia forces these things on its very community which works hard to keep it an encyclopedia. Talk pages also allowed for personalisation. Messenger takes it away, like Facebook does. When you join Facebook, you become part of Facebook, thats why you can't really customise it.

    • This is incorrect as the MessageWall is intended to eventually replace article talkpages as well. This is merely the first phase of a larger project. The implementation of MessageWalls into user talkspace is surely just to permit the product’s further development and perfection, beta beta testing. — SpikeToronto 09:29, October 22, 2011 (UTC)

  • Well I have to say that hiding longer conversations concept isn't bad, I would really like to see that happening, since talks are sometimes too long, shortening them is a good idea, it makes navigation easier. Also having something that tells us WHAT messages we have isn't bad either, but an old fashioned message box is good enough, if it tells me the heading/s that I got, that's ok. Also, IMPROVING the commenting thing, that is something, if the staff can make an improved version of it then that is gonna be great. To name the user/s to which you want to send the message, then in a box you add the text and just send the message, that if it gets a preview button like the editor will be perfect! I will make sending a message way easier. With the message box linked directly to the heading edited, then navigating to the talk will be easier and compressing discussions is gonna make navigating through the talk a lot easier. What else would we need for improvement?!(dreams of being someone important and having his ideas listened, nice dreams, on the blog they won't be at least...) Ricizubi 17:39, September 27, 2011 (UTC)

You have to try, you have to since hope dies last, that's one of the basic parts of human survival, to not give up. its better to try and then say you failed rather than to say you never tried, it might be just one site on the internet, but we users work on it, edit on it so we have to careI don't care if they implement it or not, I want what they implement to be improved, not the way they want it, since that way no one agrees Ricizubi 18:58, September 27, 2011 (UTC)

          • WoWWiki did leave (it's WoWPedia now). Wikia, as the Sergeant notes, kept the name and the (increasingly outdated) content to lure in eyeballs and google searches and make ad money. Same with the City of Heroes wiki (Paragon Wiki), now hosted at CoH Titan, and GTA (again, per the Sgt), and I'm sure there are others. See, that's the thing: you can copy, you can move, but you can't actually make them remove anything. Once you give them your content, it's theirs forever. StClair 20:25, September 29, 2011 (UTC)
            • WoWWiki did not leave, several admins and users left to form Wowpedia. However, Oasis did hurt WoWWiki significantly and Wikia lost alot of revenue (they have to pay someone to help maintain WoWWiki now). -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 4 Oct 2011 2:18 PM Pacific

  • Why has the Wikia Staff decided to implement a feature that Facebook has been catching flack for itself? The stuff that Wikia keeps adding to Wikia was designed for social networking sites (some of which dont even work correctly), not encyclopedias. • Most people who visit Wikis are regular, unregistered visitors. 99% percent of those have and will never see your talkpage. By making the talkpage more clear and easier to use Wikia hopes to encourage teamwork for the Wiki. If people want to call that "Facebook-ish" then go ahead, but I don't see how it does and I'm actually looking forward to the message wall. Compromise: The Middle Ground

The problem with this forum is that it does not allow for those of us who have no problem with MessageWalls on the right wiki, but do not want it forced on those wikis for which it will not be a good fit. There are some wikis on which the MessageWall would be a great fit. But, there are others on which it would be a disaster. Unfortunately, the choices in this forum are binary: MessageWalls on, or MessagWalls off, on all wikis, no other possibility. There are, however, two other possibilities:

  1. MessageWalls activated via Special:WikiFeatures on those wikis whose Communities want it
  2. MessageWalls, TalkPages, or Both activated via Special:WikiFeatures.
On those wikis where both are activated, then both MessageWalls and TalkPages would co-exist. It would just be a matter of creating additional namespaces.
Suppose both were activated on a television programme-based wiki called True Blood Twilight: Sagas Unite. Further suppose that, just last night, the latest episode of the series aired and that a keen, eager member of the True Blood/Twilight community has created a new page in the main article namespace {{ns:0}} for it. The associated talkpage in the talk namespace {{ns:1}} could continue to be used by those True Blood/Twilight content creators and wiki maintainers who need the greater functionality of mediawiki talkpages in order to best perform their unpaid, volunteer jobs at peak efficiency. At the same time, the myriad numbers of True Blood/Twilight community members not involved with content creation and wiki maintenance, who want to chat and commune about the lastest episode of this great series, would use the MessageWall associated with that new episode article, which would be found in a linked namespace (e.g., {{ns:201}}).
In this way, Wikia would still have MessageWalls making Wikia the place on the Internet that combines the best of Facebook, Twitter, and mini-Wikipedias, generating ever more mouse clicks yielding ever more revenue. At the same time, the unpaid, volunteer content creators and wiki-maintainers — whose content makes Wikia the place to visit on the Internet — would still have the greater functionality of talk namespaces to best perform their unpaid, volunteer jobs at peak efficiency, yet still be able to participate in the chit-chat communing space that is MessageWalls. By Wikia continuing to permit talkpages, current core members, who create the content that attracts revenue-generating visitors to the site, would be able to continue to function optimally, continue to thrive.

This forum does not permit those of us who see a middle ground, a compromise, from voicing that position. — SpikeToronto 09:29, October 22, 2011 (UTC)

I agree. I really don't want the Message Wall on some Wikis but if I wouldn't mind it on others. I really, really, really want this to be optional, just like a bunch of other users do and most features are optional. In fact, I think all features should be optional and enabled/disabled in Special:WikiFeatures.
Head.Boy.HogTalk  Happy Halloween!  18:07,10/22/2011
Agreed too. I have no doubt it would be useful for some wikis, but on many, many others it would not be. It should either be optional via WikiFeatures or else be on all wikis as an addition to talk pages - most certainly not as a compulsory replacement for them. Wikia can add message walls as a new namespace and leave talk pages/the talk namespace alone so that both can be used or just one or the other if a particular wiki wishes. Wikia seems convinced talk pages are broken - maybe they are not fit for purpose on some wikis, but for oh so many others they work perfectly fine and do not need to be replaced. Communities should be given the choice. Good post Spike! ~~Ууp <talk> 13:21, October 23, 2011 (UTC)
By the way, I opposed the message wall above only because it wouldn't be optional. Head.Boy.HogTalk  Happy Halloween!  14:11,10/23/2011
Same. I don't mind it being optional, since it could work on the wikis that do want to become social networking sites, but the staff seems more content on shoving it down our throats without taking into consideration what those who are more content/information-oriented have to say about it, especially since article and site maintenance are a priority on such wikis, and actual talk pages are helpful in those scenarios. Message Walls will botch that grossly, especially when users use the talk pages to make random comments that have absolutely nothing to do with article and site maintenance, not to mention many wikis still get vandals, both for articles and their talk pages. Arrancar109 (Talk) 19:26, October 25, 2011 (UTC)
Not to be snotty, Spike, but nothing prevents you from making a new post with your position and a new place for people to list their usernames in support of that position. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the idea of making Message Walls switchable, but it should be in a separate post. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 26 Oct 2011 4:46 PM Pacific

Message Wall will be switchable in WikiFeatures?

From Message Wall#Updates:

Message Wall will be placed in Labs when it's close to feature complete. (10/26/11)

If it works well like that for testing, maybe they will keep it switchable. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 26 Oct 2011 5:03 PM Pacific

Nope. Every new feature starts off as an option in WikiLabs, even if it's going to be mandatory later. Raven's wing 18:21, October 29, 2011 (UTC)

WikiLabs is nearly the same thing as WikiFeatures . It is on the same page WikiFeatures and there is not much difference but , Raven's Wing , you are correct with the info. * ~Happy65 Talk My Amazing Blogs ! 08:39, October 30, 2011 (UTC)
There’s an enormous difference. They are on the same page to make it administratively and funtionally easier. They are not on the same page because they are the same, which they are not. Not every product that graduates from Labs moves up to Features. Those items in Features are Labs graduates that we optionally activate/de-activate. But, not all graduates from Labs are made optional Features products. Those that graduate from Labs, but are not moved to Features, are fully implemented, Wikia-wide. An example of such a product would be the new RTE. Just because the MessageWall is spending some time in Labs does not mean that it will necessarily move to Features when it “graduates”. Every indication is that it will be treated like the new RTE and be fully implemented system-wide. — SpikeToronto 08:50, October 30, 2011 (UTC)
I don't know. I felt that talk pages were what made Wikia special, and having a signature to customize was what made it all the more fun. I haven't tested the message wall yet, but I'm not certain if I would leave Wikia just for that sole reason. Random-StoryKeeper 01:28, November 11, 2011 (UTC)
I'd like to have an option as to what to use... standard wiki talk page, that weird thing that article comments does, LiquidThreads, or MessageWall, and be a user selectable option (personal preferences selects your personal talk page, while Wiki wide option selects the default style, or default style per namespace) ForestMonthZero 06:42, November 15, 2011 (UTC)
