The footer in action

Good morning! Ever been frustrated on a talk page that after you've read all through the discussion, reached the end of the page, and wanted to add a new section, you are forced to scroll all the way back up again to do so? Perhaps you did not even know MediaWiki had a built-in function for quickly adding new sections to talk pages? Maybe your wiki wants more control over where new talk sections appear on your wiki?

Well, today we're launching an update to the "add new talk section" function by adding a footer link on all talk pages (in the Monaco skin) to let people quickly add a talk section, which works the same as the "Comment/Add new section" link in the page bar area.

We're also making it possible for a wiki to choose to have new sections appear at the top of the page, just before the first H2 heading on that page (after any untitled intro text if any exists). If you think this is appropriate for your wiki, please put in a request via Special:Contact or post about it below - but please note it's non-standard MediaWiki behaviour, so we would want to know it is something your wiki is 100% comfortable with.

Thanks for your time! Kirkburn  talk  contr  @fandom  15:12, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Now that's an idea. Will the link appear on pages that have __NEWSECTIONLINK__ transcribed on it, like forums and project pages that are utilised for discussion? Wjxhuang, the 888th Avatar {Talk} 15:25, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
At the moment only pages marked by MediaWiki as "talk", so that doesn't currently include pages marked with that magic word. It's a good point though, I'll bring it up with the team.
The MediaWiki message for the footer link is MediaWiki:Addnewtalksection-link. I've also added a preview above. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @fandom  16:40, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Edit: Please note, we know of some small design issues with custom skins, which we're working on. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @fandom  22:36, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Wjxhuang, the 888th Avatar {Talk} 04:20, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I just saw this on another wiki and was thinking "well looks what's new!"
I think it will also help with the problem of the add a category that some used to reply... — TulipVorlax 08:15, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
That tulip is a long shot, because addcategory is in the mainnamespaces and this link is in the talknamepaces --Cizagna (Talk) Dofus » 08:33, 05 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh, yeah, right. ;-) — TulipVorlax 11:13, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I hadn't really thought of it like that, but anything that helps users use talk pages is "a good thing" :) Kirkburn  talk  contr  @fandom  08:40, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Could it be usefull in forum space too ? Another way to put it would be to wait for this to take in account the magic word and modify the forumheader... — TulipVorlax 11:13, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I did consider the forum namespace, but the issue is that forum pages aren't really normally used with multiple sections - on many wikis, I would expect a conversation that wants to start splitting off into multiple topics should really be starting new threads, not new sections.
