M.mendel helped me some time ago to chart the genealogy of a DOM element on the JavaScript Wiki, and I just copied the DOM pages to the HTML & CSS Wiki because they don't actually have anything to do with the JavaScript language (just its typical environment, which the other wiki documents). In the process I decided to add Category:Genealogy_pages to the relevant templates and pages to help keep track of them. However, I found that the pages onto which the genealogy subpages were transcluded inappropriately inherited the category. Example:

I tried to use noinclude tags on the templates and (because noinclude was removed upon saving) onlyinclude on the subpages to keep the category out of the transclusion, but as you can see it didn't work. (I might recall being warned about this... Maybe I need to manually write a list of links rather than using a category.)

Obviously, any help is appreciated. --Jesdisciple (talk) 11:27, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

I've added <noinclude></noinclude> to every template/page that was transcluded onto the page which you didn't want the category to be. There was also one template documentation page that transcluded the category to both: the template page and every article that uses the template; fixed that as well with <includeonly></includeonly>. Hope that's what you wanted, if not; feel free to undo my edits and specify the issue more precisely. Sovq 12:28, January 31, 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm a little puzzled exactly what you did differently from me, but somehow you got it working. (Using <includeonly> on the template documentation page only had the effect of removing the category from that page, so I've undone that.) A hint to the difference may be that, when one of the ~ subpages is edited without a summary, the <noinclude>'ed category becomes visible when I'm prompted to correct my negligence. (I thought I tried that, though... *shrug*) --Jesdisciple (talk) 14:05, January 31, 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps you missed one of the pages that transcluded the category when you tried? You're right the documentation page didn't need a fix, I'm just used to categorizing template doc pages separately than the template and that's probably why I thought this might have been an issue. On a related note: I suggest you disable category select (Preferences > Editing > Advanced Options) I you haven't already. It caused a few category transclusion issues on my wiki back when I had it switched on, not to mention - it's more transparent to have the categories defined in the code instead of a blue bubble ;). Cheers! Sovq 14:20, January 31, 2011 (UTC)
Ooh, I didn't know I could get rid of that. Thanks, again. (I think I've loathed every change to the software that Wikia's made...) --Jesdisciple (talk) 15:40, January 31, 2011 (UTC)
