I've decided I no longer want to work on the Metal Gear wiki. I can think of lots of ways to improve the wiki however I know the main admin will not allow it. what do I have to do to start a parallel wiki.

  • Hi. Starting a new wiki is simple! You can go to this page, follow the steps there, and you're new wiki will be created in a matter of minutes. Good luck! =) - Brandon Rhea@Wikia(talk) 07:04, September 12, 2010 (UTC)
Don't bother. Number one, it will never be as popular as the original. Number two, it will mainly be just you doing it. If there is already a decent wiki about a subject, don't make another. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 07:11, September 12, 2010 (UTC)
Brandon Rhea, that's not the kind of response that I was hoping to see from a staff member. You are suposed to encourage users to improve existing wikis, not encouraging them to create new wikis about the same subject. So now wikia is a site where you create a wiki, spent a lot of effort and time to create original content, and then another person comes and just steal the contents and put them in another wiki. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) -WikiDex 14:25, September 12, 2010 (UTC)
The staff seem to think that more wikis are better than great wikis. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 14:50, September 12, 2010 (UTC)

No one ever said anything about stealing content. Let's assume good faith. There's nothing wrong with having two unique wikis on the same subject. If someone no longer wants to work on a wiki and would rather start another one, that's 100% OK. That was my opinion before I became a helper and it's my opinion now. - Brandon Rhea@Wikia(talk) 16:29, September 12, 2010 (UTC)

My opinion is (as it always has been) that another wiki on the same subject as an already existent wiki should not be made, due to the fact there is ALREADY A WIKI OF THAT SUBJECT!!! So, do not bother making another wiki of the same subject. It will just fail. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 17:48, September 12, 2010 (UTC)
Then after it fails, it will get vandalised and sit there in a vandalised state for years.Example --Tetrap 21:14, September 13, 2010 (UTC)
  • So 219.89.9.130 has decided not to make needed improvements to the Metal Gear wiki because the main admin will not allow it. I'm new to Wikia, but I'm a long time Wikipedia editor. There are some things I would love to do in Wikipedia that the admins don't allow, most notably my own "original research". So I am just starting a wiki here, mostly so I don't have to provide references for my pronouncements! With this background, I can fully understand why an admin would object to some things 219.89.9.130 views as "improvements". Here's how to resolve the situation: make sure there's a really good page (or pages) that give policy statements, particularly: "What Metal Gear Wiki Is Not" along the lines of WP:NOT. I recommend that 219.89.9.130 work with the other admins of that site to develop this policy. Then, if the improvements he's suggesting are out of policy, then a parallel wiki (with a different "NOT" page) is called for. Then there will be two wikis, each with different and clearly defined missions.—GraemeMcRaetalk 15:47, September 14, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for all the comments, It's helped raise a few issues that I'll need to figure out.

How suitable would the scratchpad wiki be for starting on given that I may end up being the only one who edits it. does it have a good reputation for creating fully functional wiki communities? --122.57.95.161 22:34, September 20, 2010 (UTC)

Ok, I have a wikia Modern Wikia there are only a few users on it and we have 250 pages and counting, I am currently the only one editing it, and i am having a good time trying to both improve it's look and its content. Look, you dont have to have 2000 users like wikipedia has, just have fun making a wiki for wikia's community, even if it is not too popular.--Andrew Schlieffen (talk · contr) 20:05, September 23, 2010 (UTC)
