Added by Kirkburn
Adding cool media to your wiki just got easier. There is a new Add Video icon on your toolbar right next to the Add Picture icon that allows you to easily embed videos from around the web onto any wiki page.
Adding videos and images makes pages more dynamic and gives readers a way to dive even deeper into a topic, without ever leaving your wiki. Videos, such as how-tos, game walkthroughs, TV episode clips, and movie trailers, are the perfect complement to the information and guides already on your wiki. Try it out by adding an image or video to your user page now and let us know what you think!
If you have any questions, you can find more information on the help page.
Thanks,
Wikia Community Team
Please add feedback below, thanks!
- Please note the extension is currently undergoing further development, so if something is missing, we may already be planning on adding it :)

It's a ridiculously awesome tool. How difficult will it be to add different video sites in the future? Not that any of those are limiting, just wondering. And what happens to a video if it's taken off it's main site? How does it show up on the wiki? HUGE Thanks for this! :)

I take it this won't be optional. If there's a choice, I'd rather disable it. We have a neutrality policy on the wiki I help run, and this raises concerns about certain users filling pages with videos that are motivated by favouritism (i.e. -- "favourite couples"). Think I might need to expand the policy now. -- James26 14:52, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Button position
Interesting Idea, Not sure if its much use to me yet. But as video links are getting more common on other sites suitable material could probably be embedded in the wikis pages in some instances.
But can the Add Image button be moved back to be the last button, in place of the video one on the edit bar ? As I'm currently adding some of the 1000 of photos I've got to the Tractor wiki, It was a lot easier with the image button as last one. (the video buttons appeared and disappeared several time today ? Can the upload speed in loader be speeded up ? (BTW the new "improved" Image is far better than it was with the new options for copy right) Can the caption edit window/strip be made a bit longer ? - BulldozerD11 19:48, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- We found a bug earlier today which meant it was briefly removed. The icon should now be a permanent addition though.
- OK - I thought it had come and gone a few times
- The icon position is unlikely to change though, as images are a "higher" priority feature. It is fairly likely new buttons will be added in future, so we don't really want to keep shuffling stuff around.
- If Images are highest priority they should be the right most button (with video to the left) ??
- Glad you like the improved image uploader, we're pretty proud of it too!
- Regarding upload speeds in general, it possible - but it would be part of wider efficiency improvements, which is a constant battle. Over time it should improve.
- Finally, the caption width - fair point, I shall put in a request.
- Thanks

Great, questions...
Does this mean the <youtube> tags will stop being supported? Should all YouTube tags be replaced with these new ones?
Also it would be cool if while one was sliding the width bar, it actually resized the video in real time. -- LordTBT Talk! 19:50, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- This is intended to eventually replace the youtube extension, but it's not going anywhere for quite a while given how much it is used. Hopefully we can get everybody using this new tool instead :)
- Regarding resizing the video in real-time, this did come up during development. Currently it's not done to keep it simple, but it's possible it could be added at a later point. Kirkburn talk contr

Wookieepedia needs this turned off
We had the YouTube extension disabled long ago and didn't expect an evil clone of the YouTube extension to infect our wiki. As ever, it's optional. I have now set it to false on Wookieepedia. I don't see what's evil about allowing people to add videos, anyway. They're just moving images. Kirkburn talk contr 16:15, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- The difference is attitude. Wookieepedia feels that if this feature was allowed, it'll be misused. Wookieepedia prides itself as being a encyclopedia, and it wants to remain encyclopedic. --Michaeldsuarez (Talk) (Deeds) 16:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Can't get Metacafe.com video default size when embedded
Embedded videos are wonderful. I want to add another embedded video to this page:
I want to embed a Metacafe.com video at its default size.
Please see this video file page:
It illustrates the problems I am having doing this. It seems that the width setting defaults to
- width="300"
I want the width setting to default to the default size. I think videos look best and sharpest at their default sizes. I also think that they are less of a load on servers being that they don't have to be converted to another size. --Timeshifter 03:13, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- This is intentional: as the different embeds use many different default sizes (and we're planning on over twenty different sources), it could result in very inconsistent pages if everything chose its own size.
- You can still redefine the sizes of videos with the width parameter, and in the next release the video page (like [1] will show the "default" embed size under the video so it's easy to find out. Kirkburn talk contr
16:32, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- OK. I see how for most users they need to know that when they put brackets around a file name in video space they get consistent results. Is there any way I can figure out myself what the video width is here?: [2]. Right-clicking the video pulls up Flash settings, but no pixel width. It would be nice in the next release to have some kind of checkbox for "native size" or "original size" or something so I don't have to think about adding the width parameter. --Timeshifter 01:36, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. Some ideas: How about width="original" or width="native" or something... --Timeshifter 03:47, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
|frame|
might work if it could use the original video width. Here are some related image formatting experiments below using |frame|
I used clear between them to stop any overlap. It looks like width sizing is not possible with |frame|
I clarified the |frame| info in Help:Displaying images to make it align with wikipedia:Wikipedia:Extended image syntax, and make it clear that sizing does not work with |frame|

Need layout option for no text wrap around a video

In the video display options menu (after clicking the insert-video toolbar icon) there are only left and right alignment options. With both of those options text wraps around the video. It is the same as for images:

Could you also add the "none" option as for images. See the image wikicode below.

By the way

produces this:
So the default setting for images if no alignment setting is selected is "none".
That is different from the settings for videos where if no alignment setting is selected then the default setting is "left". See an example here:
Adding "none" to the video wikicode has no effect. It still defaults to left alignment with text wrap around the video. --Timeshifter 06:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Copyright tags
Where do we sit with regard to copyright, do we need to tag these videos (as is done with images)? Or do not need to worry as nothing is actually uploaded to the individual wikias, as it's just an embedded video player with the videos hosted on YouTube (or where ever else)? --Tangerineduel 10:02, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

- You are welcome. You may also need wikipedia:Template:clearleft. I installed that on the wiki I edit. See: [4]. It produces something similar to what Kirkburn showed us:
- One pastes in clearleft
- I found it useful on this page, [5], in the video section. It stops the text from wrapping around the second video, yet it allows the right-aligned images to continue unhindered down the right side in a column of images. --Timeshifter 19:23, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
(unindent) It seems that clearleft is not adequate in some cases. See this sandbox page on another wiki. Concerning new video tool...
So, i have tried this new tool to embedd videos and i think its little incomplete. Not bad tho, but its still faster and easier for me to embedd my videos by copy-paste similar content from other wikia pages and then just copy-paste my video URL and YouTube id number from another open Tab. When embedding a video with this tool, the content in the edit page needs still a lot of editing to make it clear, right and adequate. IMO --File:Youtube1smaller.jpeg CryonBrion (Talk) 11:35, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
a problem
There is a problem with this tool in Hebrew. The video is on the display options and on the "insert" button, so it's impossible to add video in this way.

Videos still playing after deletion
Today, I had to go through and delete several videos added to Redwall. However, after deletion, the page where the code is to play the video still works. The videos still play just fine. -- LordTBT Talk! 01:39, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- I think that, unlike Images, when you delete a Video: page you are deleting only the wiki page, but not the database record that makes a relation between the video name and the URL of the video. This should not happen, since some problems may occur (primary key errors if the same video is uploaded again?). --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) -WikiDex 19:59, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- So you're saying if someone uploads several videos unnecessary, and then an admin goes and deletes them, the admin will also have to find all the pages they are located on, and remove those links too? That's a lot. -- LordTBT Talk! 04:31, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

- You mean the red links to a deleted video? Sure, but the point is if someone uploads an inappropriate video, it's still playable after deletion - thus what is the purpose of deleting a video at all?
- Another issue I've found - I deleted a video because I selected the wrong link from YouTube. Then I uploaded a new video with the same name (after deleting), yet Wikia still displays a file history despite the deletion: [6] -- LordTBT Talk! 08:27, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Not showing in WhatLinksHere
Videos embedded into a wiki page are not shown in Special:WhatLinksHere. That's really a bug, since the pros of having them in a new namespace is that you can track what videos are uploaded and which pages use them, so if we need to remove or change them is easy to find them, but now they're like a youtube tag --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) -WikiDex 19:48, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Improve Load Times?
Will using this method improve the loading times of pages with a bunch of videos on it over the Youtube tag? I tried to make a page containing eight different youtube videos in a table using that tag, but it takes forever for the initial image to load on all the videos, presumably because it creating a separate connection with youtube for each video. Does this new method contain image saves of the videos so that the videos don't have to load from YouTube unless you actually press the "play" button on the video? Or do I still need to ration the use of videos per page? --Reinhart77 03:59, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Videos not working?
Videos aren't working for me. -- LordTBT Talk! 03:24, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Really? No one's had any trouble with this yet?
Wow, my wiki's real f**king lucky, then.
On the digimon wiki, we have seen a lot of instances of IP's being able to screw with the videos. There is absolutely no way to prevent this, you can only clean up after it and hope the IP doesn't switch too much for you to handle.
From what I can tell, the IP is able to do this by using the "revert to a previous version" button on the video's page.
- The IP is able to do this without even being logged in, despite all normal policies on uploads, which require logged in users with a few days experience to upload.
- You are unable to block the IP from the logs, as instead of showing the actual IP in question, the uploader is named as the unblockable "An unknown anonymous user".
- You cannot delete the article and either restore revisions or reupload it under the same name. The past revisions log will still be there.
- No level of protection will prevent this - I tested this by sysop-protecting it and then logging out, and it was still susceptible.
May I ask, wikia, why you added a system whose main differences from the normal file upload process was mainly that all security measures were removed? Even those security measures which exist on basic wiki articles?Golf lima oscar romeo india oscar uniform sierra Charlie Hotel Alpha Oscar Sierra! 08:57, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
- By posting here the community will be aware thanks you, but wikia people may dismiss it by accident, its best for bugs to report them by Special:Contact -- 15:10, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
- Does email to Special:Contact go to an email list? Is the email publicly archived? I like my email address to stay private. At Wikipedia there are various public email lists for discussing ideas and problems. That is why I ask. Could someone clarify this on the Special:Contact page so that others with the same questions get answers to these questions too? --Timeshifter 13:58, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- I reported this forum page to the Community Team, so they could look into it. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) -WikiDex 17:00, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'm having this happen right now over at Redwall myself, and I've blocked the entire IP range and he keeps returning to revert a video. -- LordTBT Talk! 17:04, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
It has been reported, by lots of people. As far as I knew it was fixed. I'm tracking down why it didnt take effect. --Uberfuzzy 18:10, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
I have been using the other video embedding method without problems: Help:YouTube extension. --Timeshifter 14:10, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- This issue is already fixed. --Inez

Float problem solved
Big white-space gap problem has been solved (gaps between stacked videos). See:
This can occur when trying to stack videos on the left and images on the right. --Timeshifter 20:19, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
