Before I start, how do you know you have beaucrat rights in a wiki? I am not sure the previous administator (the founder) has gotten to it. I figure that some of these things are possible only if I have all rights.

My Wishlist

  • New namespace for simplying searchs for Radio stations. Without this, such searches might turn up bogus data from unrelated items. I can't provide a search for something like matching stations with reception in Portland, OR; but I at least want to ensure contemporary music results and contemporary radio station results are not dumped into the same results set.
  • A forum system like this one. I definitely do not want a Wikipedia Village Pump-like system. That system forces users to either watch all posts, regardless of topic, or watch none. This system lets users watch only topics that meet their fancy. Technically, I would prefer something like what ZoneLabs has. For that see http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=inst&message.id=56652.
  • More options on edit pages. I would like to provide editors with at least IncludeOnly and NoInclude. Commands to insert common table formatting (or perhaps just a typical box around an item) would be a good idea too.

You can browse bureaucrats with Special:Listusers/bureaucrat. The forum system here is easily installable, and there will be other forum options available in the future. The Edittools could be expanded with the m:CharInsert extension (see Wikipedia:MediaWiki:Edittools for example). --Splarka (talk) 05:07, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

So how about the namespaces? Will 05:25, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

The procedure for getting custom namespaces is listed on Help:Custom namespaces and if you don't know already Help:Forums lists info on adding forums to the forum system, and has a link to the page detailing how to setup the already existing forum extension on your Wiki. But the one you mention looks more like a actual forum, you may want to find a host for a phpBB system if you realy want a forum like that, but watching can be done here by simple use of the normal watch system.
Oh... just a little trick I use. If your users have strong backgrounds in using normal forums, and probably won't use the indenting style that we are using here. You can add - [[Image:Forum new.gif]][{{SERVER}}{{localurl:{{NAMESPACE}}:{{PAGENAME}}|action=edit&section=new}} after {{PAGENAME}} on your Template:Forumheader page, and also add __NEWSECTIONLINK__ to the bottom. That will enable the + at the top of the screen, and give a button on the page that says "Post". It's just the same as adding a new section.
Just remember that when requesting Custom Namespaces you need concensus from your wiki, so I suggest putting out an announcement and using the <poll> system. Though, you could also use my alternative system. I use an announcements forum with a small spot on the main page to get the attention of my members. Dantman (Talk) 09:48, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

The poll might be useful later, but for the moment, I can predict the poll results on the fingers of someone who has lost 9 fingers. I am the only person in there at the time. (I am working on that.) Will 19:03, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Regarding getting beaucrat access, how do I get that? The person that founded the wiki is not responding. Will 19:15, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
If a founder for a wiki has been inactive for a few months, then that wiki qualifys as one under "Adopt a wiki" which means that you can adopt it and become the new founder. Uppon becoming the new founder you are upgraded to Sysop status, and they try to contact the old founder, if they cannot contact the old founder, or they say ok, you can ask for Beurocrat status anytime once you need it. Dantman (Talk) 23:13, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
Only problem with that scenario is that it assumes that the wiki has been totally abandoned. Otherwise it wouldn't have been available for adoption. Where an existing community currently exists, elections might be called for. It depends on what systems for selection, if any, have been set up. --Kirk 00:28, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

It was totally abandoned prior to when I started working on it. At the time, I was not aware of that status. It was only after a day or two when I saw no one changing the pages I was watching that I checked the recent changes list. That showed no recent changes between mid-last month (when I started working on it) and December of last year. As such, for the moment, I am the Wiki. As such, any election is a foregone conclusion. I still see no way to implement the edit tools in a Wikia.com wiki. It looks like you need your own server. As part of these changes, I would like to offer a common edit description box like the Star Wars wiki offers.

To get something added to the toolbar you you would probably want to read through an extension such as the code for the Tex Editor, and find out how to add a button to the toolbar, write an extension to do that (Probably just simply using the code at the end of that page) and test it and if it works, request that it be added to your wiki. An alternate way to add buttons is to do it the way that wikipedia uses, by changing [[MediaWiki:]] you can add a box to below the edit box and use some javascript inside of MediaWiki:Monobook.js to in total create a box with a list of options that can add stuff to the box. You can probably look at wikipedia's edit area using a few web design tools to find out what code they used.

There was still a small community at the wiki I adopted... If no-one edited it then I couldn't have gotten it to this point. All I've been doing is trying to create standards and organization for the wiki. We have a few members and one of my goals is to try and bring the community together stronger. So no, the wiki dosen't need to be entirely dead to addopt it. You just need to have good reason to adopt it. But that may not even be needed remember the. meatball:PrincipleOfFirstTrust Dantman (Talk) 05:59, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

That doesn't help me any. I do not know Java and am not a web developer. I at least understood the other option even if I did not appear to be able to implement it. Will 14:10, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Javascript, not Java Java would take longer to learn and is implimented differently. You don't need to know much to be able to do it, wikipedia already has it done. Just goto wikipedia and copy the box from their MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning2 box to add the box. And look at their MediaWiki:Monobook.js for the javasxript they use. If you can't see that then use either the web developer extension for Firefox or look at the source searching for <script and go to the src="___" page where the javascript is held and copy the JS for the box. Dantman (Talk) 22:21, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I copied some stuff to w:c:christianmusic:MediaWiki:Monobook.js. It had no effect. Will (talk -- contribs) 02:33, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

The box is at wikipedia:MediaWiki:Edittools. Dantman (Talk) 04:20, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

But where do I put that? Will (talk -- contribs) 04:36, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
As I said above, to use the edit tools tricks like they use on enwp, you need the m:CharInsert extension installed (which you can request from the wikia devs, might take a while though). You can put in the javascript code yourself, but you can't create the links without the extension. --Splarka (talk) 05:26, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
