==Linking to another Wikia community==
An '''interwiki link''' is a link to another wiki on Wikia, or to any other wiki listed on the [[MetaWikiPedia:Interwiki map|interwiki map]] (which is part of the wiki's database), using the abbreviated form <tt><nowiki>[[wikiname:pagetitle]]</nowiki></tt>. This prevents you needing to use the full URL, and will prevent links from breaking if a wiki later changes its address.

  +
* To create an interwiki link from your wikia to another, use the format <code><nowiki>[[w:c:wikianame:pagename]]</nowiki></code>. So for example if you wanted to link to the Jedi page on Wookieepedia, you would use [[w:c:starwars:Jedi|<code><nowiki>[[w:c:starwars:Jedi]]</nowiki></code>]].
  +
* If you would like to modify the displayed text, follow the same format as with all [[Help:Links|links]], and add a '|' after the link along with the text you want. So for example, <code><nowiki>[[w:c:starwars:Jedi|test]]</nowiki></code>, would appear as [[w:c:starwars:Jedi|test]].
  +
* Note that non-English communities often have a language code prefix. A German community will often have a URL like <code>de.wikianame.wikia.com</code>, while Spanish communities come under <code>es.wikianame.wikia.com</code>. When you link to one of these communities, simply include the language code prefix. Example: <code><nowiki>[[w:c:fr.wikianame:Page]]</nowiki></code> (note the dot between "fr" and the wikianame).

==Linking to another language version of your community (interlanguage links)==

* To link to a version of your community in different language, use <code><nowiki>[[</nowiki><var>languagecode</var>:<var>pagename</var>]]</code>, e.g.<code>[[<var>fr</var>:<var>fromage</var>]]</code> will link to the "fromage" article on the French-language version of that community.
  +
* If you leave off the pagename, it will use the pagename of the article that the interwiki link is placed on.

* Generally such links are placed alphabetically by language code at the end of an article.

* Note: because different languages can use different names (such as the English cycling.wikia.com and the French cyclisme.wikia.com), interlanguage linking must be manually activated by the Wikia community team. If your topic has another language version at Wikia, and you would like to activate interlanguage linking, please leave a request on the {{#NewWindowLink:homepage:w:project:Interlanguage_link_requests|Interlanguage link requests}} page on Community Central.

==Linking to an external wiki community==

* Sites listed in the ''{{#NewWindowLink:homepage:w:MediaWiki:Interwiki map|interwiki map}}'' can be linked via <code><nowiki>[[prefix:pagename]]</nowiki></code>. For example, <code><nowiki>[[Wikipedia:Jedi]]</nowiki></code> will be converted to link to the English Wikipedia's "Jedi" article: [[Wikipedia:Jedi]]. Such interwiki links are not styled as external links.
To link from a Wikia to another, use <tt><nowiki>[[</nowiki>w:c:<var>wikiname</var>:<var>pagename</var>]]</tt>, e.g. <tt>[[w:c:Starwars:Jedi|&#91;&#91;w:c:Starwars:Jedi&#93;&#93;]]</tt>. Some Wikia have their own wiki prefix; for example, the Star Wars Wikia has a prefix of "Starwars", and its Jedi page can be linked via [[Starwars:Jedi]]. It is not necessary to use [[w:c:Starwars:Jedi]] in that case.

* Note that the name used in the interwiki link is not always exactly the same as the domain or sub-domain, e.g. [[MetaWikipedia:]] vs. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki. Wikia's interwiki map also supports [[MetaWikiMedia:]] and [[m:]] for this community.
  +
* Many (off-Wikia) MediaWiki help pages are kept on http://mediawiki.org/wiki/, which can be linked to with [[mw:]]. Don't confuse this with the [[Special:Allmessages|MediaWiki:]] [[Help:Namespace|namespace]] for [[Help:System messages|system messages]].

[[fr:Aide:Lien interwiki]]
You can use the format ''<nowiki>[[wikia:pagename]]</nowiki>'' (or just ''<nowiki>[[w:pagename]]</nowiki>'') to link to pages on the Wikia Community Central site. This is true for any pages with the community.wikia.com subdomain.

[[it:Aiuto:Link interwiki]]

[[nl:Help:Interwiki links]]
''<nowiki>[[community:pagename]]</nowiki>'' also works.

  +
[[ru:Справка:Интервики ссылки]]

For example; to link to Community Central from other wikis use [[wikia:Community Central]], [[w:Community Central]], or [[community:Community Central]].

== Linking to Wikia Help ==

You can use the format '''''<nowiki>[[helpwiki:pagename]]</nowiki>''''' to link to most help wiki pages (pages with the ''help.wikia.com'' subdomain) from other wikis. For example;

*''<nowiki>[[helpwiki:Contents]]</nowiki>'' to link to [[Help:Contents]] from other wikis:

For '''category, talk, and special pages''' use '''''<nowiki>[[w:c:help:pagename]]</nowiki>''''' to link from other wikis.

*''<nowiki>[[w:c:help:Help talk:Contents]]</nowiki>'' to link to [[Help talk:Contents]].

*''<nowiki>[[w:c:help:Category:Help]]</nowiki>'' to link to [[:Category:Help]].

*''<nowiki>[[w:c:help:Special:Search]]</nowiki>'' to link [[Special:Search]] for the help wiki.

It is oftentimes better to link directly to the help wiki with the above methods. This is because then the help wiki can be searched from the page.

''<nowiki>[[help:pagename]]</nowiki>'' displays the same content when used on other wikis, but it is [[Draft:Transclusion|transcluded]] from the help wiki. The link subdomain of the transcluded page is not ''help.wikia.com''. So the help wiki can not be searched from those transcluded pages.

== Linking to an External Wiki ==

Sites listed in the interwiki map can be linked via <tt><nowiki>[[wiki prefix:page name]]</nowiki></tt>. For example, <tt><nowiki>[[Wikipedia:Jedi]]</nowiki></tt> will be converted to link to the English Wikipedia's "Jedi" article: [[Wikipedia:Jedi]].

Note that the name used in the interwiki link is not always exactly the same as the domain or sub-domain, e.g. [[MetaWikipedia:]] vs. http://meta.wikimedia.org

See the [[w:c:c:MediaWiki:Interwiki map|Interwiki map]] on Community Central for interwiki prefixes for an ever-growing list of individual external wikis.

== Link to a Wikia site from an external wiki ==

If the Central Wikia is in the interwiki map of another wiki, you can link to any Wikia using the syntax:

<nowiki>[[Wikia:c:Wiki name:Page title]]</nowiki> or

<nowiki>[[Wikiasite:Projectname:Page title]]</nowiki>

For example, <tt><nowiki>[[Wikia:c:Starwars:Jedi]]</nowiki></tt> or <tt><nowiki>[[Wikiasite:Starwars:Jedi]]</nowiki></tt> from a wiki outside Wikia would link to http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jedi

The '''c''' stands for "city" (a legacy from Wikia's origin as "Wikicities") and makes use of automatic redirects.

== Interwiki Redirects ==

It is sometimes possible to [[Help:Redirect|redirect]] to another wiki using interwiki links (although this has now been disabled by default in MediaWiki). Such redirects are not recommended since they can be surprising and confusing for users to be taken automatically to a different wiki.

There is no easy way for the user to return to the original page other than using the "back" button on their browser, and it is difficult to edit the page once redirected. Redirects of user pages are especially harmful, since it prevents people finding the contributions list of that user. A [[Help:Soft redirect|soft redirect]] can be used as an alternative.

An interwiki link is a link to another community. This link is often to another Wikia community, though can also to any other wikia listed on the {{#NewWindowLink:homepage:w:MediaWiki:Interwiki map|interwiki map}}. Interwiki links are shortcuts that mean you don't have to use the full URL, and they can help simplify the maintenance of links if a community later changes its URL.

Linking to another Wikia community

  • To create an interwiki link from your wikia to another, use the format [[w:c:wikianame:pagename]]. So for example if you wanted to link to the Jedi page on Wookieepedia, you would use [[w:c:starwars:Jedi]].
  • If you would like to modify the displayed text, follow the same format as with all links, and add a '|' after the link along with the text you want. So for example, [[w:c:starwars:Jedi|test]], would appear as test.
  • Note that non-English communities often have a language code prefix. A German community will often have a URL like de.wikianame.wikia.com, while Spanish communities come under es.wikianame.wikia.com. When you link to one of these communities, simply include the language code prefix. Example: [[w:c:fr.wikianame:Page]] (note the dot between "fr" and the wikianame).

Linking to another language version of your community (interlanguage links)

  • To link to a version of your community in different language, use [[languagecode:pagename]], e.g.[[fr:fromage]] will link to the "fromage" article on the French-language version of that community.
  • If you leave off the pagename, it will use the pagename of the article that the interwiki link is placed on.
  • Generally such links are placed alphabetically by language code at the end of an article.
  • Note: because different languages can use different names (such as the English cycling.wikia.com and the French cyclisme.wikia.com), interlanguage linking must be manually activated by the Wikia community team. If your topic has another language version at Wikia, and you would like to activate interlanguage linking, please leave a request on the {{#NewWindowLink:homepage:w:project:Interlanguage_link_requests|Interlanguage link requests}} page on Community Central.
  • See Help:Interlanguage links for more information about this kind of link.

Linking to an external wiki community

  • Sites listed in the {{#NewWindowLink:homepage:w:MediaWiki:Interwiki map|interwiki map}} can be linked via [[prefix:pagename]]. For example, [[Wikipedia:Jedi]] will be converted to link to the English Wikipedia's "Jedi" article: Wikipedia:Jedi. Such interwiki links are not styled as external links.
  • Note that the name used in the interwiki link is not always exactly the same as the domain or sub-domain, e.g. MetaWikipedia: vs. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki. Wikia's interwiki map also supports MetaWikiMedia: and m: for this community.
  • Many (off-Wikia) MediaWiki help pages are kept on http://mediawiki.org/wiki/, which can be linked to with mw:. Don't confuse this with the MediaWiki: namespace for system messages.

Linking to a Wikia site from an off-Wikia community

  • You can generally link to any Wikia using the syntax:
[[Wikia:c:wikianame:pagename]] or [[Wikiasite:wikianame:pagename]]
