Beta testing on specific wikis
Edit
The article says: "This extension is currently under development - it may be in beta testing on specific wikis, but may not be widely available for some time."
On which wikis is it being tested? --Timeshifter 17:35, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Source code
Edit
You seem to have added some neat enhancements to http://mediawiki.fckeditor.net/. Are you planning on releasing the source code for this? If so, can we get a link? Thanks.
- I found it: http://code.google.com/p/wikia/source/browse/wikia/trunk/extensions/wikia/Wysiwyg/. Thanks.
MediaWiki+FCKeditor
Edit
I believe MediaWiki+FCKeditor is what is being beta tested:
It has a sandbox:
Its sandbox may be using a later version at times than the version tested here at Wikia. I don't know.
Its talk page seems to have more testing and discussion going on:
- http://mediawiki.fckeditor.net/index.php/Talk:Sandbox --Timeshifter 02:12, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
- Aye, what we have been working on is based on that, but with a lot of extra development (some Wikia-specific, but not all). As far as I know, a bunch of the stuff should get imported back, both for the basic fckeditor and MediaWiki itself. Kirkburn (talk)
17:29, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm. Thanks for clarifying that. I will also check out the version of the new editor here. --Timeshifter 06:20, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- I found some info on the collaboration:

Turning it off
Edit
I can't. "To disable this editor for yourself, go to Special:Preferences and select the "Editing" tab. Tick the option to "Disable Rich Text Editing".": My Preferences do not have that option. Help! — Robin Patterson (Talk) 22:50, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
- It will only appear when you're on a wiki with the new editor active. Kirkburn (talk)
15:07, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- So I have to turn it off for each wiki separately? I hope it stays off permanently for each wiki then. — Robin Patterson (Talk) 22:32, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Is there a specific list of wikis with this?
Edit
I'm curious about this, and I want to try it out, but the wiki I'm at(SmashWiki) doesn't have this. Obviously, a list of wikis with this would let me go to one with this.SZL (Talk)15:08, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- A quick list is that all new wikis created since around the start of December have it. [1] may help you here. Kirkburn (talk)

Has this editor been abandoned?
Edit
I checked the recent wikis as suggested in the previous thread, and none seems to have the new editor. What is the status of this new feature ? If abandonned, I'm curious to know why. Thanks. pcarbonnelle 20:50, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
- They should do. It's a user preference, so you may have it switched off. Visit a new wiki and check your editing preferences. Kirkburn (talk)

Is there anywhere the new editor can be tried out?
Edit
At one point the new editor was enabled on the Terminator wiki. I started this user page there just to test it out eventually:
But now I don't see the new editor when I click the edit button on that user page. --Timeshifter 01:44, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, it was switched off when it started causing some issues with page formatting: those issues have since been fixed however. Kirkburn (talk)
23:56, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- Which wikis are using it currently? I don't see the new editor when I try to edit my terminator.wikia.com user page.
- I picked a new wiki from http://www.wikia.com/wiki/New_wikis_this_week and I started my user page there. I don't see the new editor. See:

You might already know this but your Wikia WYSIWYG demo website contains some html (at least on the main page) which prevents your editor from working when you try to edit (kind of illogical considering the name of the wiki).--79.80.43.183 18:58, October 3, 2009 (UTC)

Central Forums
Edit
From Help:New editor#Feedback: "If you have feedback about the new editor, please visit the Central Forums or email community@wikia.com."
This is confusing. I rarely use email for such things. I, like many people, avoid most email lists. They are too time consuming. Where is the main talk page for discussing the new editor? A direct link would be most helpful. --Timeshifter 01:45, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
- For something as large as this, we don't really want a huge discussion page. You can always search on the forum to see if your topic has already come up. community@wikia.com is not a mailing list - it's a ticketing system, which puts you in contact with the community team. Kirkburn (talk)
23:54, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- I am interested in browsing threads, learning from the mistakes of others, sharing ideas, getting group feedback on suggestions, etc.. Maybe Wikia could create a subdirectory of the Central Forums just for the new editor. Then all the threads about the new editor would be in one place. I find that forum searches don't help me much. They can be very time consuming and oftentimes provide little in the way of useful info. Browsing is much more fruitful, since even if I don't find my particular issue, I can still learn a lot.
- I, and others, have this problem with the Firefox and Opera forums too. Threads get lost in these general forums. Much time is wasted duplicating discussions that rapidly get buried with other unrelated discussions. Busy people soon give up. Suggestions are ignored, or not even seen, since there are so many new threads on unrelated topics pushing all threads rapidly off the top page. I believe that is why Firefox 3 is so buggy compared to Firefox 2. Also, Firefox, like MediaWiki, depends on Bugzilla, another poor way to get feedback, or to brainstorm. Especially since Bugzilla publishes your email address publicly, a sure spam magnet. --Timeshifter 18:03, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
How do you switch off the RTE for an entire wiki?
Edit
I ask because it has been causing several issues with page formatting and has actually locked up a few users' browsers. I'm getting rather tired of explaining how to shut it off in preferences, and the community almost entirely prefers the older editor anyway.
Screennameless - "Goodnight, everybody!" 16:54, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- That would be done via Special:Contact. Do you have any specific info about what problems are being caused - e.g. text issues, browsers used? Kirkburn (talk)
17:53, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- Not really, I'm afraid. They basically come to me saying, "Help! Something's wrong!", and I always advise that they try shutting off the RTE and using the old window before troubleshooting further. Then once they turn off the RTE all of a sudden everything works like magic.

Other wikis?
Edit
Is there a way to get this going on any wiki, or is it only for Wikia wikis? Will it be released as an extension like the basic FCKeditor?
Also, did you ever manage to fix the problem FCK was having with indenting on talk page threads? Purple Scissor 22:57, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- We plan to release more of Wikia in-house code over time, but I have no time estimate at the moment, essentially because the extension is still so heavily under development. As for the talk page issue you mention - I am not certain what bug that was, but I think it is very likely to have been fixed. Kirkburn (talk)
17:35, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! The talk page bug... basically, the editor doesn't allow indenting, as we are doing here (Or, I should say, it doesn't allow you to see the colons, so you don't know how far you are indenting). Maybe that's why you disabled it for talk? Purple Scissor 23:37, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure if you use the same mediawiki as wikimedia but would it be easy to adapt your editor to their websites?--79.80.43.183 22:08, October 3, 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Pages with slow RTE load times.
Edit
If RTE takes a long time to load a page into the editor, (like greater than 5 seconds), before you throw in the towel and resort to __NOWYSIWYG__, try the following. Identify any time consuming templates, and wrap them either internally or externally with the conditional:
.
What this does is prevent RTE from rendering the template (revisionid evaluates as null at edit time). The speedup can be dramatic- typical articles on our wiki formerly required 30 to 45 second load times, sometimes as bad as 1.5 minutes. With this change to the templates, the load times are back down to 5 seconds.
The downside is that the user cannot see a representation of the visual elements that the templates produce from within the new editor, or via preview in the wikitext editor. This could be lessened somewhat by using the second operand of the conditional to display a dummy element that renders using the same visual real estate.~ Phlox 18:57, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
How to Add this to Self-hosted Mediawiki
Edit
Hi,
How to add this extension to our own Mediawiki Installation ? Vinodh.vinodh 19:12, September 2, 2009 (UTC)
- See MediaWikiWiki:Extension:Wikiwyg on MediaWiki Wiki Tedjuh10 - Talk 21:04, September 2, 2009 (UTC)
- Note, that's not exactly the same extension. Currently our version isn't easily available as the codebase is still changing rapidly and strongly tied to Wikia, but eventually it should become easier to distribute. No time estimate unfortunately. Kirkburn (talk)

Turning the WYSIWYG function off within a template
Edit
I had some trouble with the new rich text editor on the Ibanez Guitar Wiki, mainly with pages already containing a certain template with a parameter containing another template. I solved the problem by adding the magic word to the first template page. Any page with this template now automatically disables the WYSIWYG editor for editors using the rich text editor.
Example below:

This template creates a specifications table for guitar models and the color template creates a special color designation. I guess the problem lies in the fact that this new editor automatically reverts 'inline wikitext' like this (or whatever it's called) to longhand wikitext (i.e. one line per cell/parameter), thereby thinking that the "|" of the color parameter actually is a | of the speclist parameter.
(Note: we actually are stopping using the extra color template within the speclist template and starting converting it to longhand wikitext on many pages)
--BramTalk! 14:18, January 6, 2010 (UTC)
- I believe this issue may be fixed in the upgraded editor, coming today. Kirkburn (talk)

Edit
Is there anyway for me to install this editor on my Mediawiki wiki? I am using FCKEditor, but I find it rather ugly. This new editor seems really great, and pretty. Can the code from code.google.com on top be used in Mediawiki?--Raistlin 18:31, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Turning the WYSIWYG function off within a template (part 2)
Edit
It seems like this trick doesn't work anymore: having the magic word transcluded with a much used template doesn't have any effect anymore. There's probably a good reason for it, but now I'm wondering: the rich text editor locks itself in source mode if the page 'contains complex code', for instance if you use the 'none' parameter in image syntax (I guess). What are more examples of 'complex code'? Is there any way to force source mode again within a certain template? Although I'm a big fan of making editing easy, I don't think the RTE works well with page dominant content templates with lots of parameters. Thanks, __BramTalk! 20:23, April 10, 2010 (UTC)
Background
Edit
How come that the background of the wikia can be seen in the rich text editor instead of the white background from the article?
