Old convoEdit

I see, it works only for user namespace. Why don't it works with all type of page? --RobinTh 14:56, 19 Aug 2005 (UTC)

This is set by default. If you really need a subpages on other namespaces, contact Angela or Jason. --DCLXVI 15:08, 19 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Update: It has been changed to default for all namespaces globally. --Splarka (talk) 05:20, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Using colons for a similar purpose - bad, good, or just so-so?Edit

Towns, Villages and Cities has made much use of things loosely called subpages but with colons where the standard subpages have slashes. I'm wondering whether it is as useful as it appears on the surface. Reading some of the Wikipedia discussions in the pre-categories days helps the wondering.

One advantage is shorter page names. "Porirua:History" takes less space and typing than "History of Porirua". Three keystrokes.

Another advantage comes with the use of piped links. For example, in the main Porirua page we can write "the city's [[Porirua:history|]] is fascinating", with "history" (which the software inserts after the pipe) looking like a normal prose word but being a direct link to the correct "subpage" (not to an article titled "History") and easier to code than if we had to write something like "the city's [[History of Porirua|history]] is fascinating". The advantage disappears with sub-subpages, because the pipe software chops off only up to the first colon, so when we get a page "Porirua:History:Pioneers" we would get a link "history:pioneers" appearing in the text if not careful; it would work but read as bad prose.

We have a good category structure, whereby cities:Porirua:History is in its city category as well as its subject-matter category. One day it may also be in a "Coastal cities" and/or a "University cities" category. We may yet have a pioneers category, where the yet-to-be-created page cities:Porirua:History:Pioneers can go additionally. Maybe that's a fully satisfactory alternative.

Comments for and against, from anyone with experience and/or imagination, please.

It's certainly taken a long time for anyone to reply to this message, but I do have some disadvantages to mention. I'm the founder of Pen Pal Wiki, and to start with I used a colon to make subpages of every language, eg. English:Under 18. The problem was, I started making an Esperanto section (courtesy of translations by some people on the Wikipedia Reference Desk), but links to any subpage of Esperanto tried to look for the equivalent page on the Esperanto Wikia! It was very annoying, and I couldn't find any way to stop it. I ultimately decided to use the slash subpages instead. The colon does look a bit nicer and tidier, but the slash is much more practical and useful. Markdarb 21:31, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
The colon is overused in MediaWiki. It can indicate namespaces, interwiki links, and interlanguage links. If none of those apply, it is just considered a name of the article. The Esperanto: is an interwiki link, I believe. --Splarka (talk) 03:28, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

IssuesEdit

Ugly backlinks in main namespaceEdit

Can be hidden with css. --Splarka (talk) 06:19, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Templates starting with slash no longer workEdit

A template named Template:/something can no longer be transcluded via {{/something}}. This can be temporarily fixed by using the full name: {{Template:/something}}. You can request your Template: namespace subpages be disabled (and if this issue cannot be fixed, we may set that as default). Note that this should only affect transclusions from the Template: namespace, as all other namespaces require the full page name to transclude anyway. --Splarka (talk) 06:19, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

List of Subpages Edit

Is there a method to show a subset of Special:Allpages, rather than just moving to the start in the Allpages set? Or is there another way to display the hierarchy implied by the page/subpage/subpage titles? --FGrose 19:35, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
