Hello, I am from the Person of Interest wiki (Pedia of Interest). We have been wanting to make a chat bot for our wiki's chat for some time now. There are a handful of us regular visitors but not enough to warrant a request to you for a bot of our own, so we are setting out to make one from scratch, and we really have no idea where to start. The latter half of the bot (like what phrases to respond to and such) is easy, but it's connecting it to our chat that's the problem, reading the messages that are sent correctly and sending a message of it's own (all of which probably just boil down to connecting as a user). If we could get any pointers we would be very grateful. We appreciate any consideration and tips you give us.
For an idea of what exactly you'd need to do, you're free to look at the source code for some of my bots. I'll try to field any specific questions you have, but unfortunately I'm a bit busy with schoolwork right now, so it might take a while.
Sorry for interrupting :P but i wanted to ask you a question about the bot that you run over the Club Penguin wiki.
It seems like in the following dates (and maybe in other as well though i'm not aware of):
Is it an error with the /me command perhaps? If so, is the username followed by the "*" is the user that posted the /me message?
It may sounds kinda pointless but i just need to check some things about it :P
It's not an error - that's how /me is meant to be displayed in the logs. The bot mimics the log format of irssi, an IRC client, which represents /me like so: [Fri Mar 28 10:12:05] * sactage destroys the world. The username is whatever directly follows the * - it's a little harder to tell where it ends, though, since MediaWiki converts underscores in usernames to spaces.
If other users who can request to be an administrator or a chat moderator in Community Central, the admin or staff can choose first if they can be able to promote it first for users' rights. That may work on what they've chosen in Community Central. :)
