Merging into World
Edit
Lisa, A couple of weeks ago you asked me to create Silicon Valley as the first wikia on local.wikia. Gil & others are now talking about merging all place-based wikia into the new world.wikia. Would you please share your thoughts in the Forum? Thanks; Leo LJR 12:31, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Leo, I'm in Boston at the moment with Gil and a lot of the other Wikia staff. We are talking about this right at the moment. I think everyone agrees (here and on the forum) that it's going to be a good idea to merge some of the current wikia - there is just too much duplication. It seems that where the ideas for Local and Cities are going that those two really are too close. But the ideas you have don't quite fit into Cities. So it looks like we are back to idea 1, a wiki specifically for Silicon Valley organizations. I think using just the name "Sillicon Valley" makes it sound as though it's about all aspects of the area, so how about "Sillicon Valley Groups" with the URL siliconvalleygroups? Or any other ideas? Sorry to chop and change like this, it's such a work in progress, and ideas keep moving! So let me know what you think -- sannse (talk) 22:08, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Lisa - I understand about the chopping & changing, part of the process. There are a couple of groups that show up when I search for "Silicon Valley Groups". Originally, I thought of "Silicon Valley Communities" or "Silicon Valley Commons" but did not ask for these urls because they're too long. My preference would be "Silicon Valley Commons" with siliconvalley.wikia.com as the url, if I can talk you into that. Leo (talk) 01:54, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Lisa, I know you're busy at Wikimania, just need to know when more or less the decision will be made. If it will take some time, should I keep developing my site? Would I have to re-edit each page to make the move? Thanks; Leo|Talk 13:07, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Hi Leo, we can move pages no problem with the export import system. But it's a bit tricky to do that on this computer (tiny buttons!) So I'll make the wiki now, and then help transfer pages when I get back to England and onto my usual computer. -- sannse (talk) 20:22, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks Lisa, have a safe trip back home. Leo|Talk 14:43, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hullo Lisa - Are we there yet? :) Leo|Talk 01:53, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks Lisa! Should I insert the Delete Template into each of the old WikiLocal pages, or will they just vanish voluntarily? Looks like I have to correct some errors I made in the pages & templates I'd created, but will test the new tools as soon as I can, and will give you feedback. Leo|Talk 12:58, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- Just noticed that my watched pages got unwatched during the move. Is there a way as an Admin to automatically mark all old & new pages in my wiki as watched? Found no reference to that in the Help pages. Thanks again; Leo|Talk 13:18, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'll clear out the old pages on Local, the whole site will be redirected soon anyway, so any left will go then. The best way to watch all pages is to use w:c:siliconvalley:Special:Recentchanges recent changes. This lists all changes to all pages, so gives you the same information as the watchlist. The only thing it doesn't currently do is mail you on changes. You can automatically watch all pages you edit (see preferences) but not all new pages or all existing pages. -- sannse (talk) 13:40, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks again Lisa; all very good to know. Leo|Talk 02:31, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
