  • Please, assume good faith! I'm not trying to attack you, I'm trying to understand what you are saying with your comments. If you take thatt as demeaning, that is your choice - but that is not my intention. Text is hard enough to communicate in without jumping to negative conclusions. Do not do take my comments negatively. I'm not here for drama, I'm here to improve Wikia. That means that if I criticize something you do: I'm not trying to put you down - I'm trying to help you build on what you've done. If it helps, pretend I'm a talking goldfish (or something equally silly) while reading my comments. ;-)

    The only reason I brought up your specific coding was because I thought you were trying to use it as an example of styling and I was confused about what you were trying to do with it. Just because neither I nor FishTank can see what you're trying to accomplish with code (sometimes code isn't as obvious as it could be) doesn't mean that you're necessarily doing something bad, wrong, or evil. It just means it's different. That's why I asked for a clarification. For all I knew, that coding was supposed to make a unicorn fart rainbows all over the page. Just because I couldn't see it doesn't mean that wasn't what your code was supposed to be doing on my screen. I wasn't trying to beat you up. I just want to see things from your perspective. If I can see it, then maybe I can help others see it, too. Sometimes even people speakingwriting in English need a translator. :-)

    The only reason I brought up the help pages was because you said earlier in the thread that you were inexperienced with the new infoboxes & CSS (most people are, it's not a big deal) and you said you were still trying to understand how the code worked. FishTank wasn't offering any resources to help explain his coding differences or where to get help with the CSS (he's usually pretty good about providing those links, but he was also slightly distracted). I'm not always on during Wikia's "normal working hours". In fact, I don't always check Community Central every day (heresy, I know, but look how long it took me to get back to this message). Therefore I posted a few places that might be helpful, just in case you actually did want help understanding your infobox. You're actually doing better with them than a lot of people. :-)

    Since you said you had a problem with understanding how your infobox worked, it was important to determine where the coding issue was actually happening. It doesn't mean you're stupid. If it did, you'll have to get in line behind me, many other regular Wikians, and even some of the Wikia Staff & devs, for stupidest person award. I know that I've made my fair share of seriously bad coding mistakes before, and I'll probably make more in the future. I rely on others to point out those problems for me. The only thing our critiquing of your code means is that we're trying to eliminate all of the bugs in your code so we can clearly see the bugs in Wikia's code. ;-)

    If you still need help with your infobox, all you have to do is ask. I didn't reply directly to your wall, because I didn't know if you had a reason for your coding (which is why I asked, I didn't assume). Also, I wasn't sure that your issue was purely with that coding. Besides, if I were to take sole responsibility for helping you code things, it might take quite a while to get things done due to messaging delays. That does not mean nobody will help you, especially if you ask them directly (although, if you did state that you needed more help in that thread, I would have taken it to your message wall). Just because I direct you to elsewhere, it doesn't mean you won't get an answer from me if you inquire further. It just means that I thought you might not want direct help, or if you did, you might get better answers more quickly if you read the links or posted a request in the forum. Even if it's ultimately myself or someone else from the thread answering you there (because I know others in this thread watch the forums and help out there, too). :-)

    Like I said, I've got weird hours and sometimes FishTank is too busy and/or distracted for long responses. That doesn't mean we (your fellow wikians) won't try to help when we can. Explaining calmly and clearly what you want, or see as a problem, is some of the best help a programmer can get when designing a tool. So, please, come back and help us out. You're probably going to be either using or explaining this tool just as much as anyone else, so having your input would be a very good thing. :-)

    • Thank you for your reasoned reply. I'm not sure where you were seeing the negativity towards you on that thread. I did see some comments about "stop derailing the thread", but they did not appear to be aimed at you. I believe they were all aimed at the random comments being made by people who apparently thought that they were posting to some random chat room. If you go look, you will see that most of them have now been removed.

      As far as mixing stacked and horizontal groups... AFAIK, since the 2nd groups update, you should be able to do this in any portable infobox. Compare:

      <infobox layout="horizontal">
      <header>Horizontal Infobox</header>
      <group layout="stacked" show="incomplete">
        <header>Combatants - show incomplete stacked</header>
        <data source="side1"><label>Protoss</label></data>
        <data source="side2"><label>Terran</label></data>
        <data source="side3"><label>Zerg</label><default>Zergling</default></data>
      </group>
      <group layout="horizontal" show="incomplete">
        <header>Combatants - show incomplete horizontal</header>
        <data source="side1"><label>Protoss</label></data>
        <data source="side2"><label>Terran</label></data>
        <data source="side3"><label>Zerg</label><default>Zergling</default></data>
      </group>
      <group>
        <header>Combatants - default</header>
        <data source="side1"><label>Protoss</label></data>
        <data source="side2"><label>Terran</label></data>
        <data source="side3"><label>Zerg</label><default>Zergling</default></data>
      </group>
      </infobox>

      <infobox layout="stacked">
      <header>Stacked Infobox</header>
      <group layout="stacked" show="incomplete">
        <header>Combatants - show all stacked</header>
        <data source="side1"><label>Protoss</label></data>
        <data source="side2"><label>Terran</label></data>
        <data source="side3"><label>Zerg</label><default>Zergling</default></data>
      </group>
      <group layout="horizontal" show="incomplete">
        <header>Combatants - show incomplete horizontal</header>
        <data source="side1"><label>Protoss</label></data>
        <data source="side2"><label>Terran</label></data>
        <data source="side3"><label>Zerg</label><default>Zergling</default></data>
      </group>
      <group>
        <header>Combatants - default</header>
        <data source="side1"><label>Protoss</label></data>
        <data source="side2"><label>Terran</label></data>
        <data source="side3"><label>Zerg</label><default>Zergling</default></data>
      </group>
      </infobox>

      Edit: edited to show code

    • Yeah, see how your examples are, I am not thrilled about how it looks style wise, so I did this [1] all non-stacked accept for video which is a horizontal group using header as a label and not using labels and another horizontal group with two sides for before/previous links using labels, leaving header blank as a break (which I may change). But I like that look, but it is a more tedious workaround.
