  • I still come across places around the internet where Wikia wikis are linked using the old WikiCities URLs. For example, this message board links to http://muppet.wikicities.com/wiki/Kermit which should redirect to http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Kermit ... It used to, but it doesn't anymore. Now it goes to the Fandom Wiki.

    Why is this?

    • The domain, i.e., the nameservers, are under the control of wikia.com, and breaking good http redirections is just wrong. From my PoV it's a critical bug, maybe ask Sannse for help, this issue needs somebody who actually knows what wikicities was.

    • The first link shows Fandom and second shows Kermit. That is because it is removed.

Agreed, thanks. I've reached out to Sannse.

    • Sorry for missing this! It looks like a sequence of changes to URLs meant the old wikicities links were moved from "temporary" redirects to pointing to FANDOM.

I have put in a bug ticket, but I have to say that the number of links around that are that old is going to be minimal. So I don't expect it to be a high priority. Sorry!

      Your right Sannse.

    • Thanks, Sannse! Yeah, low priority is fine, I get it.

I'm always surprised when I find a site still linking to Muppet Wiki under the old URL. But I guess it makes sense: we were established at that location for two years before WikiCities became Wikia, and a lot of our press points to the old address (our feature on Yahoo.com's The 9, for example). And then of course, there are even older WikiCities communities that were around a year before that. So yeah, more links than I'd have thought. The internet is persistent that way ;)

Thanks again, I'll be keeping an eye on it :)

    • Will this also happen with the foo.wikia.com to foo.fandom.com redirects?

        Loading editor
    • No, we are specifically watching for any problems with that. There are a lot more links to the wikia.com urls than there ever were to the wikicities ones

    • Hi, just checking to see if the bug ticket has gotten any higher in the queue. WikiCities URLs are still not redirecting properly. Thanks.

        Loading editor
    • I'm sorry, it's low priority because there aren't likely to be many wikicities lilnks out there, and out engineers have lots of higher priority tickets. At the moment, it's unlikely to be fixed.

    • Sorry to hear that. Will this be the policy with wikia.com URLs not properly redirecting in, say, a year from now?

        Loading editor
    • No, that's definitely not the plan. The wikia.com URLs are/were on many more wikis, and there are much more likely to be wikia.com URLs out there.
