K-cerebralPalsy-enHD-AR1

CP: a neurological disorder resulting in the inability of the brain to control the voluntary muscles in a normal fashion, thus interfering with normal movement/posturing abilities

  • Four major forms: spastic CP (stiff muscles/exaggerated reflexes), ataxic CP (lack of balance/uncoordinated movements), mixed CP (more than one form)

  • Teaching/Management Implications: Can affect student’s ability to engage in class activities - many can engage but will need adaptations or accomodations, Physical therapists and occupational therapists help teachers design instruction that includes the student, Sometimes it’s assumed that student must have a severe intellectual disability, Teachers must not assume anything - motor limitations may mask intellectual ability of a student
