Spina bifida 1

Spina Bifida- Results in paralysis of the lower trunk, lack of bladder and bowel control, lacks skin sensation in the lower body and may have scoliosis.

  • Most common form is myelomeningocele: Spinal cord and its covering membrane pouch out of the opening in the vertebrae, often accompanied by hydrocephalus. Cerebrospinal fluid is not absorbed normally by the body and instead trapped in the brain which causes the head and brain to become enlarged

  • Results in motor, language or perceptual disabilities and seizure disorders

  • Teaching and Management Implications: Shunt may inserted to drain the fluid in the brain, Delayed treatment results in becoming a more serious degree of intellectual disability
