The Wikia Graphical Entertainment Project's main origin is the idea that ideally it would be nice if every anime, manga, cartoon, and comic series had it's own Wiki, but Wikia could never handle creating a wiki for each one of the hundreds of anime alone that exist, not only that but some are a bit small for that. So the WGEP's focus is the next best thing, something that Wikipedia, and anime-wiki.org wouldn't be able to handle. In the WGEP the larger series which would fit in with their own wiki (as outlined at Enough for a wiki?) and all of the smaller series which couldn't fit in with their own wiki get a spot in the top-level wiki in the project. On the top-level wiki a subpage like structure is used giving each series it's own GE world which functions much like a Mini Wiki just for that specific series.

Obviously a system like this requires a few changes in the MediaWiki software with minor hacks and most of it handled by a few normal extensions and some specially made Extensions for the wiki.

All subpages of this page detail different things such as what extensions need to be installed and changes to be hacked into the source code to make a wiki a Top-level wiki in the WGEP (eg: the Animepedia is a top-level, and the Manga Wiki, Cartoons, and Comics would be if they were part of the project) and good detail on what they do for the project and why they're needed: (Please note that this is just a current listing of things, it's under construction and is likely to be changed, none of these actually need installation on the Animepedia until development is complete)

  • Existing Extensions - A listing of Existing MW Extensions which would need installation into a top-level wiki in the project, as well as the reasoning and purposes they would serve.
  • Hack List - A listing of the few types of code changes which would need to be added so that the custom extensions would work.
  • Custom Extensions - A listing of the Custom Extensions developed which would be installed into the project.
  • Installation Instructions - A step by step set of instructions for converting a wiki into a top-level WGEP wiki (for the devs).
  • Extra notes - Notes on other functions of various things here which may be implemented in the project.
  • Technical Overlay - Technical information on the setup for WGEP wiki types and technical relations between the wiki.
