Last Sunday I attended the Zedler Prize Award ceremony in Berlin, Germany as a representative for the VroniPlag Wiki. The Zedler "Free Knowledge" Award is awarded by Wikimedia Germany to projects which exceptionally support the idea of free knowledge in the last year. VroniPlag Wiki was one of the nominees in the category "External Knowledge Project of the Year" and I'm more than happy to say that VroniPlag Wiki was chosen as the winner!
VroniPlag Wiki is the follow up wiki to GuttenPlag Wiki, which was used to examine and document the plagiarism in the dissertation of the former German Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (who resigned because of this scandal). Several months ago, I wrote about our (TWN) and described how new Wikia features become available in different languages. Since we started working with TWN, users have helped translate thousands of messages, including more than 100 Wikia extensions.
As a thank you to the community, and to show that we really appreciate all their great work, Wikia sponsored a Translation Rally for TWN's multiple projects from April 23–April 30.
As you can see from the graph below, the results were awesome: 212 translators made 63,516 translations, and the most active translator worked on 3,407 messages alone. Here on Wikia anyone can create a wiki on any topic at all - but did you know that Wikians have already created wikis in over 250 languages?
Back in May, we told you a bit about international wikis that had some impressive growth in 2009, but now we want to tell you how we are able to offer wikis to such a range of languages.
The extensive language options on Wikia are mainly a result of our partnership with translatewiki.net, which is "a localisation platform for translation communities, language communities, and free and open source projects."
