If image attribution is against the licenses, now no image description pages at all

Ciencia Al Poder November 22, 2010

Yes, Image Attribution is against the licenses like Creative Commons, that states that the original author should be credited for the work, but the Image Attribution just makes think the reader that the person who uploaded it is the author to be credited.

But now, Wikia wants to hide even more the license tags located in the image description pages and possibly the original authors of the image if they were included there, or if the image was just reuploaded by users that only want their name to appear there (a increasing common practice I'm seeing since the new skin was set).

Wikia plan to simply replace the link to the image description page by a link to the full sized image. And this changeset proves that [1].

The reasons for moving away from Wikia aren't just the ones we all know, but the next moves Wikia hasn't done yet and will be done in the next months. Don't think about what will come next. Just take all you can now and run as fast as you can.

  • Another update: They've now applied the change again. This time, they left Monobook users, but thumbs are still kinda broken:

    • Using |center| makes the border of the thumb to not appear properly.
    • Thumb captions is center-aligned, instead of left-aligned
    • Imagemaps are as badly broken as the last time they pushed the changes last time.
  • See also the new feature to dhare images that has appeared on the Image viewer in Oasis(wikia) skin today.

    • Email - Email this image to a friend
    • Share - on social netwerk sites; Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon and Reddit
    • Embed - into other sires as; Standard link, Blog link, Forum

So these features actual add any image attribution to the image or just encourage the 'borrowing' of our wikia hosted images from 3rd party sites by others. Not all images have an original license to use on wikia that allows them to be just posted on 3rd party sites, as i understand it.

  • Hide LICENSE, but keep DESCRIPTION. And, remove image attribution, as it opposes the fair-use license.

  • Ok, this has been reverted now [1].

Let's see how long until they break it again and worse.

  • Pre-law student here: Wikia, you could come under law suit for image attribution. If you were taken to court, its not a guaranteed win but an easy one. All the plaintiff would need to show is that image attribution gives credit to someone else for their work.

I have to imagine image attribution is an easy enough feature to disable. I think if you want to save yourselves money it should be taken down

  • Okay, if this was just another Oasis feature then I'd not really care because it doesn't affect me on Monobook. But now, it DOES affect me on Monobook, and even worse than it now is on Oasis.

I vehemently disagree with what Wikia have done, on many levels.

If Wikia were anything like a sane webhost (like ProBoards, a free forum system I use a lot) they would revert the changes until they could find a way to make: A) The thumbnails actually display properly B) The link to the image description page be present (and, ideally, more prominent).

Of course, those two points should apply to Monobook first before Oasis because these "new features" aren't just "not being supported" they are ACTIVELY breaking Monobook as well as copyright laws by preventing (yes, if you can find the File name and then paste it into an URL then you can find it, but I think what is there now counts as "preventing") the viewing of licensing details.

Like I started my post with, I've been pretty okay with the changes Wikia has made because they didn't really affect me (and any other ones that did have been reverted with my .js/.css pages and passively hindered by the community) but this really is enough to make me want to leave Wikia.

Also, many thanks to Ciencia Al Poder for posting this blog entry BTW.

  • Good job, Wikia. I admire you.

  • UPDATE: It seems that today the new feature is now active on all wikis:

    • Images now are linking to their full-resolution version of the image instead of to the image description page.
    • No way to access the image description page in one click now. You need to click on it, wait for the image popup to open, find the link to the image description page and click on it. Before the change you could access it by clicking on the image while holding down the CTRL key.
    • Per the above 2 statements, accessibility issues if JavaScript fails or it is not enabled.
    • It's even worse in Monobook since Monobook doesn't have the "image lightbox", so there's no way to access the image description page. This obviously contradicts the message from User:Avatar below saying it still would be accessible. This just turns it out a new boycott to the Monobook skin as I stated in my previous blog posts.
  • Interesting post Ciencia.

I'ved noticed a lot of images getting uploaded here on central which appear to be just uploaded for personal use or even not used at all that are in rhe now numbering over 400, including a number uploaded by staff !! A few occasional get removed as spam or unsuitable but alot appear to be ignored.

A lot of wikia wikis rely on stretching the Fairuse rational to the limits & abit more. I norice some wikis are vey strict and have a strong image policy and complex templates, but the basic templates are very basic in the starter wikis, with some that might be expected missing.

The Image upload features need updating so they facilitate the addition of the creator and/or suitable backlinks to the source or use a feature like the import-tool for images from flickr which features a template that is filled in on upload automatically. All "Add image" buttons should be set to not upload unless a option is selected by default. Tags in the list of options could have atooltip popup examination attached.

  • Heyho. Just to clear up some confusion: While the lightbox popup will be changed in the near future (it will get some new functionality and the image itself will be linked to the original image), of course you can still get to the image description page with one click from the popup. (And photo attribution does not violate CC licenses.)
    • I'm not sure if it violates or not the CC licenses, I'm not a lawyer, but showing a "uploaded by XXXX" text next to it instead of the person that should be credited for is definetively misleading.

Also, stop putting things at one, two or three clicks away from where they previously were. This new skin is the worst accessible one. The image description page should be directly accessed from the image displayed in the page.

    • Photo attribution violates fair-use licenses. Images should be credited to their authors, not uploaders. And, typical reader doesn't really want to see name of uploader, which can even offend reader.
