The Social impacts of IT:

Today, nearly everyone is connected to the Internet. Twenty years ago, nobody had the Internet. This has affected people because nowadays everyone uses their mobile phones. This creates situations where the whole family are in the same room in silence because they are all accessing the internet. Mobile Phones are one of the biggest factors in how IT and socializing has changed over the past twenty years. Nearly everybody today has a mobile phone, which is mainly used for Social Networking. Sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are accessed by the majority on mobile phones. Some groups go out and do nothing but talk on their phones, limiting the amount of genuine conversation. A few decades ago, people would visit each other in their homes. The Internet itself, can be used to send Emails to friends and family, further limiting contact between persons. As with Mobiles, nearly every household in the present day has a computer. Computers and the Internet are also causing teens and children to spend most of their time on video games or social networking instead of with family. Before the days of the modern phone and computer, people would have to go to each other’s homes to send things to each other. Nowadays people buy things from the internet, something which would have required a trip to somewhere prior to the internet. Sites like Netflix have surfaced that allow for movies in the home, meaning people wouldn't have to leave their homes to watch a movie.

Cyberbullying - The threats with cyberbullying can lead to a threat to personal safety, but more than likely don't span further than the internet. Cyberbullying takes place via name calling amongst other things. Trolling can be very similar to cyberbullying.

Spam - People experience spam via Emails. It can be considered in some cases as a virus, as bots can be created on Emails to spam users. Spam filters can counteract these messages. Usually spam messages contain ads picked up from recently visited websites.

Phishing - Phishing can steal your credit and bank details from online stores that the user visits. It is a form of virus software that is attached to online shops.

DOS Attack - DOS (Denial Of Service) attacks, are attacks that attempt to shut down servers. This can happen for game and public domain servers. DOS attacks are used in some cases to bring companies to their knees. They shut down the servers, preventing custom.

Avoiding Internet Attacks:

Overall, a Firewall can be a great help to stop viruses from entering your PC. In the event of an attack, backing up your data onto a separate USB can save all your work from invasion and deletion. To stop hackers, a strong password is required. Passwords suchs '12345' aren't safe at all. Make complex passwords that only you would remember. A strong valid Anti Virus program will protect against hackers. To prevent Hackers and others adding to it, password protect the data, using the same methods as before with a hard to guess password. You shouldn't post offensive content to the internet as it would offend people and go against Internet etiquette. To avoid this, refrain from posting sexually explicit or abusive content.
