Technical Update: February 16, 2012

DaNASCAT February 15, 2012

Our regular release was delayed this week, and we expect it to go out tomorrow. Here are some highlights on the changes that are planned.

New FeaturesEdit

  • We are enabling across Wikia a new feature called "New Window Links", which will allow users to designate links on their site to, upon being clicked, open up in a new window instead of forwarding the user along in the same window. Here's some examples of the syntax:
    • local links: {{ #NewWindowLink: Special:AllPages | a list of pages on the wiki }}
    • external links: {{ #NewWindowLink: http://mediawiki.org/ | MediaWiki }}
    • interwiki links: {{ #NewWindowLink: Wikipedia:MediaWiki | Wikipedia article about MediaWiki }}
    • mailto links: {{ #NewWindowLink: mailto:john@example.com | mail John }}
  • We're updating the Category pages on the mobile skin for a smoother experience. Wikis with Category Exhibition View enabled will also see images for visual browsing.
  • We're updating our Log In and Sign Up forms, and we'll release the changes to Community Central (and a few other wikis) this week for testing (with a release across all English wikis shortly to follow). More info coming soon in a full blog post.

Major Bugs FixedEdit

  • Red links for uncreated pages are being restored to article preview. The loss of a CSS class caused all links on preview to appear as blue, regardless of whether they were already created or not.
  • Thumbnail generation issues from last week seem to have resolved though we continue to look for long-term improvements on our system.
  • Improvements have been made to the Theme Designer's backend connection that corrected an isolated to a few wikis but highly-visible bug of the wiki's theme background not updating.
  • Users with = or & symbols in their usernames will now be able to use Special:Chat again (there was a bug preventing them from accessing it).

Other Notable ChangesEdit

  • We're adding a new email preferences to Message Wall. Now you'll be able to select from: (A) an email for every message (the previous default), (B) watch-list style emails (one message per thread since the last time you visited -- the new default), or (C) no messages. Option B is new with this release.
  • The Welcome Bot is being updated for Message Wall to be more compatible with how it has worked in the past: contributions will appear under User:Wikia and will be hidden in Recent Changes and Wiki Activity. They will still be signed by an active admin.

Select Known IssuesEdit

  • JavaScript and CSS changes are not being seen on a simple cache clear by the user's browser. There are some caching issues on the server side.
  • Anon notifications are not working for User talk pages.

RELEASE UPDATE - 2/21/12

Hi everyone! There's a lot going on at Wikia this week, including a special training program for our engineers, so please bear with us while we switch things around a bit.

There will be a partial release this week (2/22), which will include Mobile category page changes. New Window Links and thumbnail generation fixes are already live. Other changes mentioned in this update will be released next week (2/29).

Due to changes made since we last published these notes, the following updates have also been added to this week's release:

  • The Gaming Calendar has been fixed, and will be re-released to English gaming wikis.
  • We're adding a "Hide All" checkbox to the My Favorite Wikis section at the top of your profile, so you can choose to not display them if you wish.
Thanks for your continued support as we work to squash bugs and make Wikia a great place to edit!

  • I'm very pleased at the "hide all" option on the my favourite wikis bit. Also, not sure when it happened, but clicking on a redlink for a user's profile page no longer chucks you into the editing window, which is good. Also good stuff about improving preview with the redlink thing - but still waiting for the preview to have the same width as the actual page. It's been 8 months since it was first reported to staff, and has been reported many times since.

  • What's up with this blog? I see comments being added in recentchanges, but they don't appear. Plus all the timestamps are fixed at 3 minutes after Dopp's post about updating the blog.

    • Fixed for me as soon as I left this comment. Still, the comments had definitely been frozen for me since yesterday

    • Is that still happening? I am not seeing it.

    • It froze again after I left the above comment, but I'm now seeing yours. I don't know if there are other comments I cannot see though. This is impossible to check due to the fact there is no history for blog comments and they're all treated as separate pages.

  • Still seeing a number of broken thumbnail images !! Or will it take time to go through the job que when looking at Special:unused images ?

  • Emotes, chatmod stars/Wikia Ws and wikilinks are all broken in chat. The chatmod stars and Wikia Ws have been broken for about a week.

  • Was the comment link at the top of the page reverted back to normal.

  • I believe Houston, we have a problem. Lots of odd bugs, and one that seems to be effect templates in signed in only mode. (Link to thread in Forum)

  • Are y'all aware that chat is fubar right now? Links and smilies appear as HTML. This seems to affect people using Firefox 9 (at least that's the browser it does it on for me)

  • The Talk and Comment buttons are back the way they used to be. Is this intentional, or a bug?

  • What about the kickban Chat log?
    Also, are there any chat updates coming soon? I've been waiting for some big updates for a while.

  • Will the release that was supposed to be last week go out tomorrow (Feb 22) or is it delayed again?

    • Just posted an update above. It's a weird two weeks -- thanks for being patient with us.

  • "Red links for uncreated pages are being restored to article preview" - that was one of the things I liked about this technical update. I look forward to seeing it actually happen. As of right now, a just-opened preview on the Imperialism Game Wiki still has all links - links to real pages and links to proposed pages - a pleasant but unhelpful shade of mauve. How may days does that sort of thing take to filter through after being, as the heading says, "Fixed"?

    • The code release didn't happen last week – Hi all. We weren't able to do the release last night due to some site issues, so none of the code mentioned above is live yet. To be on the safe side, we don't want to push just before a Holiday weekend, so we are going to hold this release until after next week. We should be back on our regular schedule from then. Sorry for the confusion!

  • I've noticed that redirect pages have started showing up in autocomplete in editing and the search bar. Is this intentional? Redirects for spelling errors are useful, but not when they appear on these lists

  • Sorry for the n00b question...

    What is the message wall?

    • In message wall, if you choose to see the source code of a message you cannot select any text... very unuseful.
    • Maybe it's how it's supposed to work, but in pages where there is the magic word __NOWYSIWYG__ if you edit a section or add one the magic word is ignored.
    • I agree that it is unfortunate that we cannot copy source code. The usual reason for wanting to view source is to learn from the other person’s coding.

      True, the RTE does not carry over the __NOWYSIWYG__ magic word from the top of the page to the individual sections. It’s very annoying.

    • And view source code is an option that needs to be marked in Special:Preferences, otherwise it's not available.

      I've never unmarked it, that option was unmarked by default, so I guess the majority of users are unable to see the source code of a wall message.

    • Sorry, the problem with selecting source code on the Message Wall is a bug. I'll file it and get it fixed; thanks for the report!

    • You’re welcome! And thanks for filing the ticket! Smiley.png

  • How wide-spread is users who can't make a new wiki? Are there still chat problems for lots of wikis?

    • Fandyllic: I know you like all the details, and appreciate your dedication to the site - but we also need to be elsewhere to support the wider community. We don't always have time to give you all the details about all the work being done here. Please be patient so we can keep up with supporting the site as a whole. Thanks.

    • I'm actually asking for other folks who have posted on the community forums. These problems don't really affect me since I rarely make new wikis and pretty much never use chat, but whatever. I guess I'll stop asking questions. They rarely are responded to and when they are I get responses like above.

  • Any ETA on the CSS/JS wiki-wide caching problems? This is pretty annoying.

  • I think there is an error in the symbols for the user websites in the profile header... they are all blue...

    • Known bug. We've fixed it and it should be fixed in the next release.

  • Hi all. We weren't able to do the release last night due to some site issues, so none of the code mentioned above is live yet. To be on the safe side, we don't want to push just before a Holiday weekend, so we are going to hold this release until after next week. We should be back on our regular schedule from then. Sorry for the confusion!

    • Can we get more specifics on the changes to Log In and Sign Up forms, since that isn't going to be testable soon?

    • Fandyllic, Log In and Sign Up is a refactor we've done with some minor UI improvements, nothing that should affect your flow at all. I'll be posting more details in the blog post on Tuesday am. Sit tight! Thanks!

  • Since it didn't seem to exist, Help:New Window Links. Someone from Wikia with more detailed knowledge of how the feature works should update it.

  • Good work, Wikia! Two or three things I particularly like in that list.
