Technical Update: January 31, 2012

DaNASCAT January 31, 2012

Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia. Keep in mind that our system updates happen every Wednesday, so we’re posting this on a Tuesday to give you advance notice. Also note that we change hundreds of tiny details every week, so these are just the highlights.

New FeaturesEdit

  • We're adding the ability to leave comments on blog posts and articles (where article comments are enabled) in our mobile skin. These comments will be for logged-out users only, until we release our mobile Log In tools (which are coming soon).

Major Bugs FixedEdit

  • In the recent revamp of Special:Preferences, we the preferences for "follow pages I create" and "follow pages I move" ended up in a different tab from the other checkboxes to follow pages. These will all now be in the same place in the email tab.
  • A number of features of Special:WikiStats were not returning any data or were returning inaccurate (usually very low numbers) in recent weeks.
  • The cross-wiki notification bubble hasn't been clearing easily for Message Wall notifications. We're releasing a fix that will mute the notification bubble for 24 hours if you click the "x" to close that bubble (affects only Message Wall notifications displaying on non-Wall-enabled wikis). The best way to clear your notifications is still to click "Mark All As Read" in your notification drop-down menu on wikis with Message Wall enabled.
  • Special:Following now displays Message Wall follows.

Other Notable ChangesEdit

  • Following some feedback from our community, we have made some tweaks in some recent CSS changes to section headlines:
    • Reduced margin above H2s. It's still a larger margin than it was originally.
    • The "Read More" headline for related articles (at the bottom of articles) has gained the extra margin to look consistent with other H2s.
    • Tightened the line height on Admin Dashboard to allow for 3 lines of text to fit.
  • We originally developed Message Wall to convert all Talk Page Follows to Wall Follows; however, we quickly learned that this resulted in too many notifications for many people. We've cleared all Wall Follows on Community Central, and are removing the Wall Follow sync from the feature so future wikis won't experience it. If you're already enabled Message Wall and are getting complaints from members receiving notifications for conversations they're not involved in, you can request that we clear all Wall Follows on that wiki via Special:Contact.

Select Known IssuesEdit

  • Searches are sometimes taking a long time to complete. This will be cleared up soon.
  • The upload time represented in the New Images on this Wiki module is off, sometimes showing files that were uploaded days ago as being uploaded one minute ago.

Questions? Comments? Feel free to leave them below. And if you have additional bugs to report, please send them to us via Special:Contact.

  • Why is there no Edit menu on Answers Sites' main pages? It's not really a bug (it's been that way for as long as I've been an admin on one), but it's really weird.

  • Am I the only one seeing problems with image thumbnails and previews?

    • You are not alone, we are currently investigating these reports and have already done some background work to repair the issue.

    • I encountered an ad hoc SVG rendering issue on Star Wars Fanon (FF 13.0a1/Vista).

  • Release is live. Unfortunately, we have had some issues this morning to answer some of the comments below.

    • The "source" and "visual" buttons have gone missing for a number of users from the editor. This appears to be due to some caching on a per-wiki basis. We are working on fixing it ASAP.
    • Message Wall has disappeared from Wiki Labs, we are putting it back ASAP.
    • The H2 tweaks detailed above had a configuration error when committing the code, so at this time, those changes have not been applied. I am not sure when they will be released.

    • Just to tell you, I don't think you can but, Should it be optional for each user to use the Message Wall? Maybe put it in the preferences?

    • It wouldn't be practical. As it is, running two systems Wikia-wide is difficult enough.

    • True, It's also making it hard for me to get to the Admin bit.

  • I'm getting reports of Visual/Source mode switch between isn't working.

  • Where are the tabs in the editor that allow you to switch the editor from visual mode to source mode and back?

    by Winxfan1
    • Agreed. I need to go to source mode. I don't care about RTC or whatever it's called. I don't ever use RTC.

    • If you disable the visual editor in your preferences, then it will automatically make everything you edit in source mode. The visual editor wont work at all, but I'd rather the source editor than just the visual editor.

    • @Jon: RTE - Rich Text Editor.

  • Thanks!

  • The new prefs is messed up. In Under the Hood, there are RC options but there is a whole other tab for RC. Same goes for watchlist.

    • To be honest, I don't think this is a "messed up" in terms of a bug, but I see your point that it can be a confusing presentation to the user. I have passed this feedback on directly to the Preferences design team for review.

    • sorry, should have phrased it better. Didn't mean it to be taken as a bug. ;). Btw, when you say that ou passsed it on, what do you mean? WIll it get acted upon and if such what timeframe. Personally I feel this is kinda pressing seeing as preferences are what controls a user's account.

    • I talked directly to the team in charge of the Preferences revamp. We agree there is some sort of issue going on with the presentation and do expect something to be done soon, but I can't give you a timeframe.

  • THANK GOD. I can soon leave message/edit from my mobile devices. :P

  • On Monobook, on wikis with the new Message Wall activated, archived user talk pages no longer have their history - e.g. clicking the "history" link on Message Wall:Dinoguy1000/User talk archive results in the message "There is no edit history for this page." The history is still located under the title "User talk:Dinoguy1000".

  • In wiki with the new navigation, if the page is short and there are many other tools in the bottom user toolbar, it will overlap the navigation menu

  • My still unsettled comments/suggestions from last week:

    • The Admin Dashboard link in the toolbar is gone.
    • When I select "Don't show tutorial again" in Layout Builder, I get the tutorial again.
    • When I get a reply on someone else's Wall on a Walled wiki (when I'm on a wall-free one), I get a New Messages on XYZ Wiki notification that takes me to my wall, not the wall where the conversation is.
    • Suggestion: Change Tabview to look like new profile tabs, not the old ones.\

    • I see the dashboard link in Firefox 12.0a1/Vista. What browser are you using?

    • 1) unable to reproduce. can you be more specific about your circumstances and/or give a screenshot?

      3) known issue / limitation, unfortunately, with the current system. we're thinking about ways to make it better. in the meantime, think of it as just bringing you to the wiki so you can start navigating with the Message Wall drop down notification menu.

(i'll let tim hit the other two.)

    • Roads, to me it makes sense that when you click on the blue bubble it takes you to your userspace. Suppose that you get a blue bubble announcing that you have messages at Central. Further suppose that you actually have messages on two different walls at Central. To which wall is the blue bubble supposed to deliver you? That’s why it makes sense to land you at your wall and then let you use the top right notification pulldown to decide where you want to navigate to from there (like Dopp said).

    • @Spike: True, true, didn't think of that. (But I still hope staff won't just ignore this as an excuse to force Message Wall on us.)

It's like this on all wikis I'm an admin on (which are the only places I'd see the link normally). Here's my global CSS and JS for reference.

    • Roads, the Admin button has not once disappeared from my browser. I am using Win7/IE9. What operating system and browser (+version) are you using? Thanks!

    • Google Chrome, and I think it automatically updates.

EDIT: Still not there. You might want to look at our JS.

  • The Special:NewFiles upload date has been wrong since the introduction of Oasis, or so I remember.
