Technical Update: September 9, 2014

Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia. Keep in mind that our system updates happen every Wednesday, so we're posting this on a Tuesday to give you advance notice. Also note that we change hundreds of tiny details every week, so these are just the highlights.

New Features

The VisualEditor template tool will receive significant updates:

  • The tool will now list all parameters, ordered by the position they occur within the template code. A search filter will let you quickly find the specific parameter you wish to edit using the parameter name or the existing content.
  • The tool will be positioned to the side of the template being edited, can be moved, and allows the preview to be refreshed with a button click.

As a quick preview of future updates, we are also working on a better template addition experience, including suggestions and improved search abilities, along with better behaviour when a template has no parameters.

Major Bugs Fixed

  • Main pages will no longer sometimes be missing the horizontal line between the title and the content area.
  • Viewing a left-to-right content wikia with a right-to-left user language will no longer result in some misaligned elements. Note: this fix is already live, and further improvements are planned.
