Introducing Wikia's New Mobile Skin

Dopp December 9, 2011

Hi there! As promised in our last blog post, the Mobile Team has a holiday present for you. Close your eyes and...open! It's a new version of our mobile skin! Now go ahead and act surprised like the blog title didn't give it away.

Our mobile skin was long overdue for an update, and this version lays the foundation for more improvements in the future. It's optimized for both iPhone and Android (which covers 95% of our users), and we think you'll like the changes we've made.

Article Layout & PhotosEdit

The size of phone screens makes it difficult to read multiple column layouts. To combat this, the new mobile skin now has single-column layouts, which solves common problems such as content overlap (which you can see in the "before" photo below). You will notice that the size and spacing of text and buttons have been changed so its easier on both your eyes and your fingers. We've also adjusted the size of the thumbnails and captions for a more enjoyable browsing experience. In addition, if you tap on a photo thumbnail, a larger version of the photo will open in a lightbox, you will then be able to swipe through every single image on the page.

The Top Nav BarEdit

In our last version, we have to admit that it was tough to tell what wiki you were on at first glance. To fix this, we have replaced the old navigation bar with one that features the wiki's wordmark and page color, and contains the search bar.

Additional ChangesEdit

Here are some further tweaks we made:

  • Slideshows and comments will appear as intended to give a similar look to the browser version.
  • Sliders will appear correctly and can adjust according to the orientation of your phone. They will also now display their full descriptions.
  • Large tables will be rendered at full scale in articles and will be visually cropped when necessary, so they don't affect the layout of the articles. To see the full table, simply tap it and a lightbox will appear, allowing you to swipe around and access every single pixel.

Moving ForwardEdit

  • Browsing images is now as easy as a finger swipe

Though we are very excited about this mobile skin release, we are even more excited about the changes to come. We want to emphasize that this is just the foundation. We plan on releasing more fixes for layout bugs, adding access to your local wiki nav, integrating sharing tools, and giving you the ability to make lightweight contributions.

Since we're always interested in what you have to say, we've added a little feedback form at the footer of the new mobile skin. When you give us your feedback, please be specific about the phone you're using, the wiki and page you are seeing, and what you think of the experience. You can also leave comments on this blog post. We'd love to see you share tips with one another on how to optimize for this new browsing experience. As you edit your wikis, start asking yourselves: How will my content display on a phone? How will mobile visitors use my wiki? We're heading into a world in which more people will own mobile devices than personal computers, and we want to help you be ready for it.

Happy Holidays from the Mobile Team!

  • I love new features the only feature I'd like next is way you can find out if a user is on or offline.

  • awesome for the news

  • I noticed today that Wikipedia mobile has a "Disable images on mobile site" option. Perhaps this would be something Wikia could offer as well?

  • Doesn't work for me.

  • It doesn't work. The 'show' button for headings does not work on my iOS Device.

  • I can't edit the pages from my Samsung Omnia (i900)!!!! Please, help me!

  • I would personally like to see a mobile chat, now that would come come in handy! :D

  • I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but I can't seem to get sub-sections to open. For the record, I'm running Android 2.1 and Opera Mobile 11. I think this might be a browser related issue because the stock Android browser works fine.

  • I noticed this too, but some layout intended for the view from computer just don't look right for iPhone, but it's still good.

  • my mobile phone is unable to go on the "Full Site" even on my i pod touch, it just goes back up to the top of the page when i press, on my phone, a pantech it doesnt do the (press to see info) arrow. hope to see chat available for mobile phones, and able to edit again, and see wiki activity. as before it was fine.

  • Cool.......

  • I tried it on my iPhone. It's better than the old one. Yeah.
It finally shows the comments. At last. I don't need to go to full version just to see it.
Although, there is one problem. I still can't see the wiki activity...
But it is better than the old skin.

  • i hate my life and i wanna die I AINT GOT NO IPHONE!!! RAGE RAGE RGAE ☺

  • It won't even let me switch to Desktop? (I use the Merlin wiki)

  • I just found out that custom JS/CSS don't work on the mobile skin... in some wikis can literally mess up the pages. Would it be possible to add them?

  • Another mandatory update, I see. You could make these new features optional and not say Right, you MUST move to this look.

    • Actually, this is a much needed change. You obviously haven't used Wikia on your mobile before.

    • Wikia think it is but I was chatting with Erlopez and he thinks that it is worse than the old one. I had seen the mobile format on holiday before and I didn't see any problem, other than the wordmark not showing up.

    • There are a few cases where the new skin is creating some some issues, particularly in template-heavy layouts. We're working on solutions for that.

  • I'm so relieved you've finally updated it! Before it wasn't so much as a mobile site, more of a skin gone horribly wrong, but now it's amazing!

  • can you log in on wikia in the mobile skin?

    • I believe they're going to add login in a menu next to the search button once they start adding features, but I'm not positive (I've only seen pictures).

    • You can login, just make a note of the URL.

    • There was a log-in feature from a drop-down menu in the early development of WikiaMobile 3.0, but seems to have found itself not included right now. You can still log-in as stated above.

    • This is the first of a series of improvements. Making the wiki fully readable is our highest priority, but after that, yes, we're looking at ways to handle logged-in actions. More details to come.

  • Proving that if you wait long enough, wikia may actually listen to a request.  :-) I first requested a skin like this August 30th 2006. (See Help_talk:Style.) Thanks for finally creating it!

  • Thanks for listening to suggestions. Much improved!
