Introducing new Wikia staff

Dopp March 4, 2011
It's an exciting time at Wikia, with hundreds of new wikis being created each day, incredible growth on established wikis, and lots of new team members joining the Wikia ranks. You'll probably see these new names around Wikia, so let's start with introductions to just some of the people who have recently joined the Wikia family.

Dopp
DoppAdded by Dopp

First of all, hi, I'm Dopp! I'm the newest member of the Community team. You'll see me responding to issues via Special:Contact, helping out with the technical updates, and keeping an eye on how to continually make things better for our amazing community members. I'm joining Wikia after working six years as an independent consultant -- building websites, managing web projects, and organizing online communities. I speak HTML and CSS fluently, and know just enough PHP, Javascript, Spanish, and Mandarin to be dangerous.

It's true that I'm a girl with a shaved head (I love it -- wouldn't you?). It's also true that my real name is Sarah Dopp, but please just call me "Dopp" since there's another Sarah already here. As long as you promise not to tell anyone, I'll admit that I'm addicted to Glee, Grey's Anatomy, Dr. Who, Bones, Battlestar Galactica, and Gossip Girl. And if you're inclined to make jokes about my name, you can start over here..

Also recently joining us...

Craig Berlingo

Craig Berlingo is a new member of the Product team at Wikia. He has 14 years of experience helping companies implement e-commerce and online advertising strategies. Most recently he led product and engineering teams at RockYou to help social game developers incorporate virtual currency and advertising into their apps. This required him to play lots of games and stay on Facebook all day “for work purposes.”

He's an East Coaster at heart but likes that people in the Bay Area don’t seem as miserable. When not at work, he enjoys exploring nature with his daughter and watching bad reality TV with his wife.

Brad Nemer

Brad Nemer has also joined the Product team. He comes to us with a background in large software (supercomputers), small software (handheld computers), Internet services (voice-driven web, 3D virtual economy), and both hardware and software for mobile phones. While in grad school he created the first dual masters program in design and business -- and prototyped it on himself.

Brad has traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia, and eaten his way through every Chinese bakery he can find (please help him find more at http://porkbun.wikia.com).

Dee Echevarría
DoppAdded by Dopp

Dee Echevarría is a new addition to our Design team. After graduating from the University of Delaware in May, moving home to New Jersey, and freelancing for a marketing company in New York City for six months, Dee hopped on a plane to San Francisco to join us at Wikia. It's her first taste of the interactive and online community world, but we have a feeling she's already feeling right at home.

Dee is smoothly adjusting to the West Coast by taking aimless walks around the city, tasting the best of the Bay Area's restaurants, and enjoying the California wine. It's hard to miss her fiery red hair, so if you ever see her around make sure to give a shout to one of Wikia's newest additions!

We're all very excited to be here, and we look forward to working with you as you continue to help Wikia grow. Thanks for welcoming us!

  • Welcome to the Wikia.

  • Great, I see the AWA has found this and is harassing the new staff already. Ignore them.

  • Give Ricochet Wiki layout builder. I know I am the only editor, but I want my wiki to be up to date.

  • I would love too see the engineers...one by one ;)

  • The staff are deleting comments now... That's just absolutely marvelous. Wonderfully fair, wouldn't you guys agree?

    • Staff delete comments that are spam or trolling. If you present a view or an opinion nicely, Wikia will let you say whatever you want.

  • Dopp sounds Dutch Mr. Dopp. Or should I call you Sarah :) I won't speak Dee's last name, it's too long :) and Brad's surname Nemer is also Dutch ;) I can say what it means, but it can mean 2 different things. Cool, Craig has a daughter ;)

  • Hi everyone. Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm looking forward to making some great stuff for y'all.

    • New things are great, but what would be even better is if you could fix some of the many bugs in Oasis and its additions. For example: the auto suggest on the search bar will suggest pages that have been deleted, due to a caching error. The headline bar for the "leave a message" page flips between being above the edit window and being below it. And the global variable wgAction doesn't return the correct value on wikis you've founded.

That's just a brief list, I'm sure that other users would be glad to describe many more issues to you.

Sidenote, all of those have been reported via Special:Contact and have yet to be fixed. Although, the wgAction one is still pending, as Uberfuzzy wasn't sure what I was talking about.

    • Hi Monchoman45! We do submit and track all bugs with our engineering teams, along with other improvements we want to make to our sites. Our teams prioritize their work based on what will be most important to the highest number of people. To help keep everyone in the loop about our progress, we've started a new Technical Updates report, which you can follow here: http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Blog:Wikia_Technical_Updates

Your attention to detail and willingness to report the issues you come across definitely helps. I'm glad to see such an involved and supportive community member!

    • I've seen the blog, and it's definitely a good idea, but doesn't quite address the issue at hand. For example, the auto suggest bug was reported two months ago and has yet to be fixed, and occurs on every wiki I use, plus many large wikis. I understand that you probably get zillions of reports every day and have much to do, but a caching problem doesn't seem like something that would take too long to fix. Meanwhile, special pages have talk links, the new CreateWiki page can't make answers wikis, and related pages headers are still present on blog pages on community, for which a user directly gave Sannse a solution. I know it's easy to get caught up in the swing of new stuff, but the old stuff could use a tune up too, and many users feel like not enough attention is being paid to bug fixes (or general issues, for that matter, but that's an entirely different discussion). I guess the main point of this is: before you take a step forward, make sure your other foot is on the ground. Or at least, try to get it really close.

    • Y'know Moncho if they hadn't brought out this glitchy skin in the first place... :/

    • This isn't an "Oasis sucks, Monaco was so much better, Oasis never should have been forced on us" thing. Monaco was great, but if you can get past some of the annoyances in Oasis, it's actually a really powerful skin. The PHP behind Oasis does a LOT more than Monaco ever did, it's just laid out poorly. And of course, the problem at hand: there are still many unfixed bugs in Oasis and its extensions. If the bugs were fixed and the skin was rearranged to be more intuitive, I'm sure people would forget about Monaco completely. But, that's getting into the general issues discussion.

    • Hey Monchoman, thanks again for these notes. I'm still learning the ropes around here, and I appreciate knowing where the priority issues are for users. Will keep digging and learning and pushing for the right kinds of change...

  • @Dopp, your name's so cool :D and my fav shows are also Bones, Grey's Anatomy and Glee.

  • Where's the German Gaming intern?

  • WELCOME TO WIKIA!!!!

  • Welcome to Wikia Dopp!

  • I thought that Dopp person was a dude for a second.

  • Welcome!

  • Hello and Welcome to everyone. And nice to meet you all, and good luck :D

  • @Dopp Where are the user pages for these new workers? Or do they not have one yet?

  • Good to see more New Jerseyans at Wikia! :)

  • Is you're name really "Dopp" or is it just you're nickname (or username?)

  • Hello wikia workers.

  • Ah, I was wondering why I had never had any contact with you dopp until a few days ago. Welcome to wikia.

  • Welcome all and good luck at Wikia
