New Profile Design Now Live Across All Wikis

Dopp August 18, 2011

The big day is here! We’ve been talking for weeks (well, months, actually) about redesigning profiles on Wikia, and you can see the new version live on your wiki today. These changes will make it easier for members of your wiki to introduce themselves to one another — hopefully resulting in fewer blank profiles and a better sense of who your fellow editors are.

Getting to know your new profileEdit

There is a new section added to the top of your profile that looks like this:

Myview.jpg

That’s just how you see it. When others look at the top of your profile (before you fill it out), they see this:

Yourview.jpg

But let’s say you don’t want to leave it blank. How do you fill it out? Hover over the new speech bubble area, click the “edit” link that appears and you’ll be presented with this:

Edit.png

You might see a few fields filled out with information we already have about you. (We won’t display those details without you saying “yes,” though). You can decide to keep that information, or you can change it up. Keep these points in mind:

  • Anything you enter into the new top section of your profile will appear on every wiki you’ve edited. So, introduce yourself in a way that works for all of your wiki communities.
  • Make clear, conscious decisions about what information you want to share about yourself.
  • Read our recent post about being safe online for a refresher on what to consider. It’s okay to be creative, to experiment, and to have fun. You don’t have to fill these questions out the way you would on a government form — be unique!

If you need some inspiration, take a look at some of our staff profiles. Check out mine, Danny's, and Trevor's.

Other important detailsEdit

We know that some of you will have questions about these changes, so we’ll try to answer the big ones here:

Everywhere? This change is happening across all of Wikia. It’s part of our global skin, so it’s not an optional feature.

Avatar sizes? The new avatar size is 150 x 150 pixels. Previously, we’ve had two other standard sizes: 100 x 100 and 200 x 200. If your avatar is currently 200 pixels, it will shrink to 150 pixels. If it’s currently 100 pixels, it will stay 100 pixels. But you may want to consider uploading a larger size. (Check it out — we’ve improved the upload process, too!)

Subpages? We’ve also updated the layout for subpages that you create under your profile. These now look more like regular wiki pages than user pages, and they include a link back to your profile.

Wikis you haven’t edited? Your profile will only show your information if you have edited on a wiki. If you have zero edits on that wiki, your personal information will not display.

Founder & admin labels? You may notice that we’re displaying “founder” and “admin” labels on these profiles, but not “bureaucrat” (or some other titles). This is because the difference between an admin and a bureaucrat generally only matters to admins and bureaucrats. For most users, all they need to know is that you have admin rights. We also want to experiment with giving more visibility to the founders of the wiki. And aside from these details, we mostly just want to keep the labels as simple and clear as possible. (There’s also a label for “blocked”.)

Monobook? Monobook users will not see these changes. (Although they may want to consider switching to the Wikia skin temporarily when they want to use the improved Avatar upload feature.)

Custom CSS? The profile redesign is compatible with all customizations made through Theme Designer. If your wiki is using extensive custom CSS, you may need to make some adjustments for this feature, particularly on your H1 and H2 tags. If you come up with adjustment tips that other wikis might appreciate, please share them below. (And remember: on your Wiki’s CSS and JS, you’re welcome to decorate, but you can’t change or remove functionality.)

Recent Changes? Since changes to the top of your profile are global across all of Wikia, we’ve gone back and forth about whether edits to this area should appear in Recent Changes. As a result of some of the feedback we received from early tester, we’ve chosen to not display edits in Recent Changes for now. We’d love to hear your feedback on whether this seems like the best choice.

Questions? Bugs? If you need help with anything or if you think you found a bug, you can get support by reaching out to us through Special:Contact.

We’re excited about these improvements, and we think they’ll make it easier for people to get to know each other on Wikia. We want to know what you think, too! If you have feedback, opinions, or ideas for how we can keep improving profiles, comment below.

Update (Known Issues)Edit

8/18/11

  • If you're both a chatmod and an admin, it will display you as chatmod. This is a bug, but it's also something you can fix quickly by removing your chatmod status. You don't need that if you're an admin. Fixed!
  • It's bigger than you expected. We appreciate that feedback and will consider it, thanks.
  • Search fields are missing from blog posts and blog listings. We're working on it! Fixed!

  • whaa!?

  • Why'd you change the tabs again? The ones that first came with this change looked better.

    ---****--- Roads

  • Um, abouts where does the edit button on the Profile appear? I have difficulty finding it.

    • It's under the huge block of the profile header... on the right. Not the best place for it in my opinion because it looks like it's actually in the Article space itself.

  • Uhm, it's still not active on other language Wiki's, like the Dutch Dragonball Wiki… I asked before, and you said it was going to be active, idk, three weeks ago.

    • Originally the international rollout was planned for Sep 14. We had to postpone it, as the feature wasn't correctly pushed to translatewiki.net, so people simply weren't able to translate it. Currently it's active on a small number of languages. All other languages (including Dutch) will follow on Oct 10. Sorry!

    • 'Kay, thanks for the quick feedback. Guess I'll just have to wait until October 10th.

  • What is the name this module in Wikia.css? I was checking "ProfileModule" but does not work.

  • It looks like the protection of user pages and the shape shifting masthead bugs have been mostly fixed. This is great :)

  • it would be good if one's own header was fully editable, like being able to correct the americanised spelling ;)

  • Is it just me or do all anons have 0 edits, even if they have actually made edits as shown by their contribs?

  • You guys screwed up my userpage. -.-'
I don't want to use this new profile design, but my top wikis showed up and I want them gone. However, they aren't leaving.

  • New feature and blossomy atmosphere found on Wikia com, better than previous feature more lighting and bright.

  • How do I edit the my favorite wikis section?

  • Better than expected. Though is there a way to change the background color behind the box? I mean the one which is light blue in color by default.

  • dopp if you read this . . . however the dead space wiki was changed to make it look beautiful and amazing on that website

that is what needs to be done cross wiki, because it looks downright amazing on teh dead space wiki

all the problems I had with it completely vanished when I saw how the dead space wiki changed it

    • This is week-old news already. I spent a whole day crafting that CSS mod for Kirby Wiki - It doesn't make it prettier unless you style it to do so via custom backgrounds or gradients, it just makes it smaller and more compact. The whole thread about it is here.

      • 1st (pilot) version for Kirby Wiki
      • Subtank's variation for Dead Space Wiki
      • 2nd final version for Kirby Wiki with floated tabs for empty (Wikia calls it zero-state) profiles. Make sure you set the z-index for the header drop-downs as mentioned here or it will violate ToU. All three linked CSS examples below have since been updated to match this particular implementation.

As far as I know, only Kirby Wiki, Dead Space Wiki, and Criminal Minds Wiki are using the CSS, and all three do not violate ToU.

Wikia seems to like certain things big. I'm sure they have their own reasons for doing that as much as we have our own for making it smaller. Actually the text in there are the same size as your wiki's headers 1 and 2, but you can always let loose CSS (Firebug ftw) and make things look exactly the way you want it to just as long as the function remains intact.

    • Aion Wiki too. I was one of the first to make a slimmed down version. My CSS changes have been lost way back in the blogs.

    • I can't take my eyes off the look. It looks really nice. :D

    • anyone want to give me a hint so I can fix it up like this so that it looks like that on the thundercats and john carter wikis?

    • Ralok: We implemented this on our wiki. I am not sure which of the versions outlined by Changtau we used. But, you can copy it from our MediaWiki:Wikia.css/profileRedesign.css page.

It is imported into  MediaWiki:Wikia.css  with this statement
      @import url("http://admintools.wikia.com/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Wikia.css/profileRedesign.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css");

The colors may not be the ones used by your wiki’s theme. If not, you will have to change them. For that see:

      Hope this helps!

    • passing this on to the designers so they can see the beautiful work you've all done. See below for my response to why we won't be putting the search field there, but they're thinking about other possible improvements.

  • I don't know if this has been mentioned before (as I don't feel like reading through a thousand comments), but the links on "My Favorite Wikis" should go to the user's userpage on that specific wiki, instead of to the main page.

    • Yep. Been mentioned here.

Would also be nice if the edit counts for each wiki shown were given, like before.

    • Thanks for the +1 on this.

    • You have reminded me ST. I now know that this was because of the new masthead coming in. But just before it came in, my edit counts went nuts. It said I had 1 edit for a wiki I had 250 on! I agree as well, with both of the these settings.

  • 1000 comments. Nothing new to read.

yeah the new profile's fun to play with its not like its supposed to be taken seriously or anything

    by JCM
  • omg I can't find where to change my avatar anymore

  • I really thought they'd learn SOMETHING after their redesign fiasco a couple years ago that cost them many huge wikis. Guess not. The only people they want to please are themselves (and I'm not sure what the goal is, given how functionality is not a priority). Why am I here? The only wikia site I use is lyrics so that's how I saw this.

  • Ummm...... this is horrible

  • WHOA WHOA WHOA

    I just saw something that . . . . totally . . . fixed this

    http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/User:Supertologist

Putting the search bar as part of the name tag TOTALLY FIXES IT

I dont know why it is this way on the dead space wiki, but it should be that way on all the wikis

    • PLEASE MAKE IT THIS WAY ON ALL THE WIKIS

it completely. . . . fixes it . . . it makes it look so much better

    • I like that so much better! Too bad Wikia won't listen.

    • They have listened and approved making these same changes if you want. You were told that once before Ralok when you asked.

      See the thread here

    • It does make the space usage more efficient and we're allowing wikis to do this customization, however, we probably won't be implementing this change across all wikis. The reason: if you think about it in terms of design and structure and information architecture, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have a search field inside of a profile talk bubble. That kind of placement would seem to say, "search this user", even though it's searching the whole wiki. (But i agree, it looks nice, so feel free to keep using the modification until things change.)

    • There comes a point when you've got to give your users a little credit. The search bar normally lies within the Wikia Rail, but users don't think "Hmm, I must be using this to search the rail!" The default text even states 'Search the $wgSiteName', not 'Search this user'.

A better solution might be to fit it into the .WikiaHeader instead. Perhaps centered above the Wiki-Navigation? Then the issue with it seeming 'out of place' will no longer be an issue.

  • When can we expect an update based on feedback/bug reports?

    • Probably in the Next week or so

    • We generally release bug fixes on Wednesdays and talk about them in technical updates. There aren't a lot of bugs with this feature, so we're not planning on any major announcements. Is there one in particular you're waiting on?

    • The MediaWiki:Masthead-anonymous-user one.

    • Not sure we've talked about that one here. Can you be more specific, or report the bug to Special:Contact in more detail? The closest thing I can think of is that the user page for an anon might not look the way you expect. Is that what you mean?

    • I brought it up before; Danascat said a ticket was filed

    • Ahhh, i gotcha. Since it's minor compared to other issues, it was lower on the list. Tracked the ticket down and made sure it got onto a developer's radar.
