Technical Update: August 9, 2011

Dopp August 9, 2011

Here are the latest technical updates at Wikia. Keep in mind that our system updates happen every Wednesday, so we’re posting this on a Tuesday to give you advance notice. Also note that we change hundreds of tiny details every week, so these are just the highlights.

New FeaturesEdit

  • The redesigned editor will now be the default editor on all new wikis going forward. The toggle will still be available in Wikia Labs for at least a couple of weeks before it goes live to all existing wikis. We're continuing to fix bugs, increase the speed of the editor, and look at all of your suggestions.

Major Bugs FixedEdit

  • We're actively working through some of the bugs and issues that have been raised about the new Admin Dashboard release. For more info, and to discuss these issues, see Meighan's latest update.
  • Internet Explorer 8 users were experiencing browser crashes when they tried to create new blog posts.
  • Galleries weren't working properly in Page Layout Builder when the new version of the editor is enabled.

Other Notable ChangesEdit

  • The profile redesign release has been delayed another week for bug fixes. We're expecting it next week.
  • When a wiki enables Achievement badges, the founder of the wiki will now automatically receive the Creator badge. (Other badges are performance based, and will only accumulate while the feature is on.)

Select Known IssuesEdit

  • Sliders - both the Main Page Slider and the gallery format - have been facing a number of issues in the last week, most notably new images not appearing or text being garbled after a number of slide's.
  • A few wikis have had issues with their chat servers. If your chat has the message, "Error communicating with MediaWiki server" on the Chat landing page, then please contact us.
  • Special pages that list files or pages, such as Special:UnusedFiles or Special:ShortPages are missing their bullet marks and thus make the page appear unformatted.

Questions? Comments? Feel free to leave them below. And if you have additional bugs to report, please send them to us via Special:Contact.

  • In the new editor, when I add a picture, it bumps the picture straight to the top, which I have to fix in source mode then. It gets really annoying and new users likely don't know how to fix this since they probably don't understand source mode yet.

    • Based on my experiences on wikis which do not have an RTE yet, new users can usually code to some extent, likely using the wikimarkup insertion buttons in the toolbar.

  • http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Special:SearchDigest It's live... but what's up with the missing localization file? It's not being called (not to mention that the CSV file is 0 bytes).

  • Many users global edit count is missing from their userpage. Look at this pic, user has more than 8000 edit on the glee wiki itself but it's not showing.

  • A fix for the image and js issues was pushed live. If you continue to see issues - please let us know.

  • The new editor is now live on all new wikis. Thanks for your patience as we rolled this out.

    • Cool.

Also, how come on almost all wikis I have visited, including Bakugan Wiki,Marvel Wiki and Red Dead Redemption wiki, when you edit a page the templates are in code form, or just messed up, and the edit button on Wiki Activity is also messed up? Wow that was a long sentence.

    • As Fandyllic mentioned below we are having some issues with images and js currently - so that is likely causing the problem. We will update here once its all resolved.

    • That's a strange problem, never had that before.

    • @Ghgt99, I have encountered the same problem. I think it is obviously fixable, but I like the new editor.

  • Lots of wacky things have been happening to WoWWiki. Extra section edit links, external link mini-icons disappearing, Wikia style buttons and drop menus getting all wonky, and random UI images disappearing.

It's not fun. I will wait a day before submitting the myriad of bugs, since I hope they get fixed.

  • WikEd >x9000> Wikia Editor.

  • The new editor rollout was delayed a day and will be available tomorrow. Thanks for your patience and I will update here once its live on NEW wikis.

  • Is there an option NOT to have the new editor (wiki-wide & preferences) when it rolls out? I don't like it much.

    • The prefs to turn off RTE, and also the NOWYSIWYG magic word still work. You can also use monobook.

    • I don't like monobook... And what I meant was the new visual one (it's a little too much)

    • No, there will not be that option. You will only be able to use the New Editor, in both source and RTE.

    • Go to Special:Preferences, go to the Editing tab, untick Enable Rich Text Editor. That takes care of it for you.

For the entire wiki, you first have to build a consensus that the majority of other members agree with you, and you need to develop a good argument as to why your wiki will function better without visual mode (i.e., RTE). Then you contact Staff using your wiki’s Special:Contact and present your case. Staff may, or may not, disable the RTE at your wiki.

Finally, on pages where use of the RTE messes things up, you can always place the magic word  __NOWYSIWYG__  at the top. This will cause anyone editing the page to have to edit it in source mode.

    • Got a lot of that happening. O_o (RTE failures on RSW) One good feature of AbuseFilter, catches most if not all bugs from RTE and warns user of what just happened.

    • There's no new requirement to use visual mode, but the layout update affects both modes. I know there's some concerns about it potentially being slower, which we're continuing to work on, but any effect while in source-only mode should be minimal. (To reiterate: this is not the end of our work on the editor!)

    • Guys, I think only Eladske knew what I meant - Here is it - I don't like the new editor at all, so I want an option not to have it wiki-wide and via preferences. - And what I was talking about (common sense) was the new visual editor, it's obvious of course RTE has already rolled out a few years ago. But I REALLY think Visual Editor sucks not because of the editor - BUT IT AFFECTS SOURCE MODE - I WAS OK WITH RTE BECAUSE IT DOESN'T AFFECT SOURCE MODE AT ALL and I want an option to disable it wiki-wide AND (not "or") preferences.

    • This editor layout update only affects the layout of source mode, it doesn't run lots of visual mode code on it.

    • I don't like the layout and the font. It's ok if you just edit RTE/Visual Mode, but you touched Source Mode so I don't like it.

    • I don't care about the RTE, but the source mode will also changed and I want the old style source mode. Also, is there a specific reason why wikia want the new editor as the default editor? Shouldn't we decide that as we are doing now?

    • ^

    • The problem with me is the source mode of new editor is very unhelpful, it does not show which templates is used, nor it shows categories plus you can't click in the middle to navigate through text. So it would be really help if we could get back our old editor, because of the new editor I haven't done many edits these days.

    • Finchel: All of that is on the side bar to the right in a drop down menu

    • Oh I didn't know that thanks but still it's still not useful as the old source mode, the pop-up box is just plain annoying.

  • No mention of the disappearing block and userrights logs (on special:contributions and Special:userrights) respectively when the new editor is on. Is this being fixed, but not mentioned here?

  • Surprised that there is no mention of SearchDigest (simple extension to replace the Sitemeter Logging that would catalog searches and who searched with 3/4ths of the IP), although it was just included in release 35+ while Special:Version currently says Code: release-034.054, Config: release-034.014. Hope to see it at 035 tomorrow. Ryan PM 23:33, August 9, 2011 (UTC)

  • I hope the new editor will have at least the major bugs fixed before its release on all wikis. Lack of scripts in preview mode is my main concern. I'd also love to see the default 13px monospace font, as opposed to the current 13.5px monospace in the editor window, but I guess I can't have everything, can I?

    • New wikis don't generally run custom JS, but it is something we're continuing to look at.
