The Administrators of Community Central

Hello, everyone~ As the title suggests, in this blog I will be talking about a subject that I and some others believe needs refreshing: how the administrators on Community Central work.

Most new users on Community Central come here for help with local issues and wikia bugs, since it is, after all, the Central wikia and the hub of all Wikia Wikis. All Help pages are stored here, and this (along with the VSTF wiki) occasionally seems like a VSTF outpost. Because of this, it is often mistaken that Community Central administrators have more power over other wikis. I would like to take some time to correct this belief.

Firstly, it should be noted that any Administrator is just a normal user, trusted to use a few extra links and pages to keep a wiki running smoothly. Part of these trusts, also, is the ability to make major decisions on the wiki that normal users can't do, because admins are trusted with their experience. These facts apply to all users, even users who have other higher-tier rights-for example, Helper, Staff, VSTF. They still are just normal users, and, unless an issue fits their higher-tier right, they cannot use it in issues on wikis they administrate. It's just the same on Community Central!

Community Central administrators are unarguably extremely qualified and well-accustomed to administrate, and it's quite a hard and long process to become one-and there are no steps you can do. Having watched quite a few users go through this 'process', so to speak, I can say this with ample knowledge. Because of these qualifications, and the fact that Community Central is not a content wiki, it is often assumed that Community Central administrators have more power than administrators do on other wikis. Allow me to clear this up:

What Central admins can do

  • Block users from editing
  • Quickly rollback edits
  • Protect/delete pages
  • patrol edits (this is done automatically)
  • Edit protected pages
  • Kick/ban users from chat (chat-moderator)
  • Assign groups: rollback, chat moderator
    • NOTE: They CAN, as far as I know, but Staff are the only ones allowed to pick and choose Community administrators/chat moderators.
  • Remove groups: rollback, chat moderator and remove group from self administrators
    • Again, they CAN remove those groups, but generally don't.
  • add the following group to self: bot

What other Wiki admins can do

Note that some wikis assign more rights to their sysop (administrator) groups-

  • Block users from editing
  • Quickly rollback edits
  • Protect/delete pages
  • patrol edits (this is done automatically)
  • Edit protected pages
  • Kick/ban users from chat (chat-moderator)
  • Assign groups: rollback, chat moderator
  • Remove groups: rollback, chat moderator and remove group from self administrators

Differences

There is only one difference: Central admins can remove and give themselves the Bot right-to control vandalism. Thus proving that admins on central and admins on other wikis are the same user right, the same thing-just a helpful, trusted user.

It should be noted, however, that some admins on central may have other, GLOBAL rights that they can/do use on other wikis-like Helper or VSTF. Some admins on Central have other wikis they manage/have rights on; User:Thisismyrofl is an admin here and on w:c:wolfenstein, for example. Yatalu is the administrator of Hvetshran Wiki, and she is also a helper for wikia! This is a case of a user having rights on Community Central, another Wiki, and global rights all at once.

Also, I will expand upon one point, as Semanticdrifter said: Administrators on Community Central that have no other [global] rights are given no global rights, nor can they settle disputes at other Wikis. They do, however, have interwikiedit, which allows them to do interlanguage wiki linking, iirc. However, this is the ONLY thing close to a global right that Community admins in themselves have that is connected to the Community adminship.

How, then, should we get help with our Wiki?

That's easy! For technical and bug fixes/questions, the chat here may be able to help! If you have social issues, however, that don't involve vandalism, it's better to use Special:Contact. And if you have vandalism/spam to report, go to the VSTF Wiki to report it!
