Last month we kicked off a series called Wiki Wisdom. It's a series where we share and highlight great user blog posts we read on Wikia. As a community, Wikia collects so much knowledge — our goal is to give shout-outs to well written, informative, and thoughtful blog posts.

In today's post, we're highlighting RRabbit42's help page Dealing with Vandalism and Spam. It was written on the Phineas and Ferb Wiki, but has a boatload of helpful and valuable tips for dealing with trolls or vandals.

At one point or another in our Internet lives, we all come into contact with a troll or a vandal. RRabbit42 offers calm and helpful advice. The post gives a few definitions, explains why people troll and vandalize, and then details how to handle yourself and what to do. Have you had experience with trolls or vandals? What did you do? Do you have other helpful advice? Check out Sannse's recent blog post Converting Conflict to Calm, and leave a comment below sharing your experience with us.

When someone comes by that wants to cause problems, it's easy to get caught up in fixing those problems and taking things personally. However, sometimes that's exactly what the vandal or troll wants.

Quick Definitions Edit

Here's a brief definition of each:

  • Vandal: wants to harm the wiki.
  • Troll: wants to provoke you and get you upset.
  • Spammer: can be someone who wants to sell you something or someone who posts the same kinds of things over and over again.

There are much more thorough definitions, but those will be sufficient for this page. Most of the information here will be about vandals and trolls, and not spammers so much.

Reasons Why People Vandalize Edit

At first glance, it's tempting to ask, "Why would anyone want to hurt this place?" It's very much like asking why anyone would steal, hurt someone, lie, or any of the other questions that you might ask when someone does something wrong.

But, it doesn't really do any good to ask the vandal/troll those kinds of questions. You probably will not get an answer, and sometimes simply asking the question gives the vandal/troll what they want.

Here are some of the reasons vandals and trolls do what they do:

  • They are looking for attention.
  • It's fun for them.
  • They want an ego boost.
  • They enjoy making people upset.
  • They want to shock people.
  • It gives them a feeling of power or being in control.
  • They want revenge or to punish others for something that happened on the wiki. This can be for something as small as you undid an edit they made. ("If I can't do what I want, I'll make sure no one else can use the wiki, either.")
  • They would rather destroy something than work to build it.

Returning Vandals/Trolls Edit

There will always be people that want to cause problems, and that is their only reason for visiting a wiki. Being blocked doesn't always deter them.

A lot of times it's obvious that they are the same users because the IP addresses or account names will be similar. Other vandals and trolls make more of an effort to hide what they are doing. IP addresses and user names will not have anything in common.

In either case, there is something in common: the edits they make. It is very hard for people to completely change their behavior and manners, so the more they vandalize and post troll comments, the easier it becomes to see patterns in their edits. Some of the patterns are immediately apparent, such as names or phrases they repeatedly use. Other patterns take a little longer to figure out.

It can be annoying when these kinds of people keep coming back, but there are a few ways of handling them. First, having a team of people that review all the edits being made (and have the ability to fix them). They can also be helped out by people like you who also spot problems and use the undo button to change the edit back.

Second, we can contact Wikia when a person keeps being a problem. They can check their system and take action globally across many wikis, such as reports of all edits made by an IP address or account, then issue a block or disable the account if it's warranted. This happens in extreme cases.

How You Should React Edit

The only winning move is not to play.
16px-Quote2.png

The simplest answer is don't react.

When you get upset by what they do, they win. Fixing problems should never be a competition, but for some vandals and trolls, it actually is a game to them to cause problems.

The best way to handle the problems is to deal with it in a impartial or matter-of-fact manner. Leave your personal feelings and personal comments out of the situation. This can be hard to do, especially if you're on the receiving end of an attack, but the less you give them in the way of a reaction, the less they get out of it.

Additionally, if you make a big deal out of what is happening, such as leaving personal comments in the summary, other people may get curious about what is going on and fall into the trap of reacting to the vandalism/troll comments.

For some, if they don't see that they're getting much of a reaction to what they're doing, they don't get any satisfaction out of it, they get bored, or it stops being fun for them. In these cases, they may give up what they're doing or will go to some other wiki to see if they can get a new audience there.

Steps To Take Edit

16px-Quote1.png
Don't panic.
16px-Quote2.png

Steps you should take when fixing vandalism or trollish edits:

  • Don't react. Be objective/matter-of-fact.
  • Reference policies when appropriate.
  • Save yourself the trouble. Don't bother with "Why are you doing this?" messages.
    • Some wouldn't bother reading the message anyway.
    • Vandals and trolls want this reaction.
    • A lot of spam is automated, so no person would be around to read the message.
  • Leave a message for an admin if you need some assistance cleaning things up, such as deleting pages or alerting them to a user that should be blocked.
    • Don't leave Chicken Little messages ("The vandal is back and they're going to ruin the wiki," etc.)

An easy way to think of this is "If I was talking to them in person, would I be talking coolly and calmly? Or would I be panicking, getting angry, getting frustated?" If you're not calm and collected, you're letting the vandal or troll get to you. Take a step back, wait a bit and realize that's what a lot of them want. Then take another look to see if there's a more objective way of dealing with them.

Actually Talking to the Vandal/Troll Edit

In general, only leave official notices on their Talk page, in the same manner listed in the "Steps to take" section above. Trying to help them understand what they did was wrong oftentimes backfire because it shows them you are reacting to what they did. Remember, vandals and trolls want attention and will take whatever you give them in any form you give them, so the less you interact with them, the better.

Impact of Vandalism/Edits by Trolls Edit

The way a wiki is set up, there is basically nothing that can't be fixed. We can undo edits, we can go back to an earlier version of the page, we can delete and undelete pages, and we can delete and undelete files. If there happens to be something an administrator on the wiki can't fix, we can ask for help from Wikia. Their staff members can dig deeper into the workings of a wiki and fix/prevent problems more thoroughly.

So what it comes down to is, no matter what the problem is, it's only going to be a problem for a short while. Sometimes it's spotted immediately and other times it's a few hours — it just depends on how busy the wiki is, and when the next time an admin logs in.

The problem may not be pleasant or nice to look at until it is fixed, but it will be fixed. While it's being fixed, don't panic and don't react to what is going on.

  • This is great advice! I'll be sure to keep it in mind.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. A certain troll keeps coming back with new accounts and he's been doing my head in. Thanks for posting this. :)

  • This is pretty useful for all admins: it's pretty interesting too.

  • So How to deal with a Spammers with Dynamic IP.
From God Eater Wiki, Me & Mornsta have trouble with this Guy.

    112.198.X.X (The 3rd & 4th digit keeps changing)
No matter how many block we had to him, he keeps returning.

    • Put a range block on 112.198.0.0/16. Because you will potentially be blocking other people from that same area, it can't be a permanent block. Just make it for one month or three months, however long you think it will take for this person to lose interest.

    • Adding a "/16" on the IP Address' Last Digit is a Range Block right,
      Thanks for the Advice.

    • Help:Range blocks

    • It's been a week have passed, The spammer isn't show up.
The Range Block actually works, Thanks Again.

  • oi

  • Actually, in some cases, being silent to the vandal and just reverting his edits is enough -- the attention-seekers only keep vandalizing if you talk to them.

  • loling at the picture.

  • I like this one. How about one on dealing with user conflicts?

    • Sannse wrote one last year called Converting Conflict to Calm. One of the biggest tips I can add to that is this: wait a little bit. By not responding immediately, it gives you time to think about what to do. Remember, sometimes people who are deliberately causing problems want to see an immediate reaction. In other cases, one or both of you might need that time to cool down a bit

    • Thanks.

  • This is a bit old but anyway. I took particular interest to the "Returning Vandals/Trolls" section, because we have one of those at my favorite wiki. This guy constantly returns using an IP scrambler or proxy or something no matter what. He harasses us almost everyday and it is quite annoying. I know you guys can do nothing because of he cannot be globally banned, but do you have any tips for dealing with him? The admins are urging users to ignore him, but that is not always possible and we sometimes do not know it is him for a while.

    • Oh, another question, is it against the ToU for an admin to edit somebody's comment to make it seem like they are saying something offensive about themselves?

    • Jack: If you post a list of usernames he's used in the last 3 months on my talk page, I'll see if there's a range of IP addresses I can block to get rid of him.

Editing another's post may well be harrasment, which is against the ToU - it's seriously not cool in my book.
    • Hmm, let me come on chat. It will be easier to explain and show to you :P

  • So, I just created this new wiki. It's located here...
    Full name: Scamtrolls.wikia.com

What I am now looking for is new members. I want to recruit some new members, establish an online community, and make it grow, make it flourish. I need all the help I can get with this. Thanks already for your tips and advice on how to set up a community.

  • I am having a lot of trouble on one of my wikis. It constantly has mean people inserting swearing and explicit/sexual information. I can't not react, because young children come on the wiki. I need advice on what to do now!

    • Block the people. If they're similar IPs, use a range block for about a month. If they're single IPs, try 2 - 6 weeks, if they're users, block them 6 months - 1 year.

    • Be careful with range blocks though—bad calculations can result in great collateral damage.

    • Also, if you want to delete revisions, either use someone from the deleterevision group, or follow a more complicated process.

      1. Delete the page
      2. Go to undelete
      3. Click select all revisions
      4. Uncheck the bad revisions
      5. Hit the undelete button

After that, only the appropriate revisions will appear in the page history to users without the sysop group.

    • u keep silent because silencyyy hasss great goodnesssss uuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    • Do you think this is some kind of joke?

  • Thankfully this is helpful, The only thing worries me is my IP.

  • What do you do when they do this though? http://timeoinisadick.wikia.com/wiki/Timeoin_is_a_dick_Wiki Should I feel honoured that they dislike me that much? :P

    • (Also, Kudos for the "War Games" reference in the blog :D)

    • Awww, Timeoin! Luckily anything on a wiki can be reverted. ;) (And saved to post on a test wiki :P)

    • Wow someone made a whole wiki about you Timeoin! XD You must be doing something right! ;)

    • That happened to Kastera1000, too (Admin on the Fallout Wiki). I'd take pride in it ;3

    • There's a quote from The Big Bang Theory that applies here:

Wil Wheaton: You're not still sore that I beat you at that card tournament, are you?
Sheldon Cooper: I am the proud owner of ihatewilwheaton.com, .net and .org. What does that tell you?
Wil Wheaton: It tells me that I am living rent-free right here. (points to Sheldon's head)

If they feel the need to create a shrine to their hate, then that shows they haven't realized that there are so many more important things in this world, and when they reach the end of their life, the time they spent hating will be time wasted.

    • Well said :)

    • if myyyy loverr ignorr me i've great sarroooooooooooooooooooo in myyy heart

  • I say people need to have more of a understanding of some issues and read between the lines. AKA I guess I was proclaimed a troll for some reason involving a theft I didn't commit.

    • Yeah, I was called a vandal yesterday when I didn't do anything, so I know how you feel. Also, I agree that people need to have more of an understanding of some issues

    • I myself have been seen as a troll several times. By mistake, of course. Those who know me know I would NEVER be a troll. I feel for you, I really do.

  • Nice input and tips. Good thing I haven't experience this kind of stuff yet, but there are some wiki that I visited before and experience this problem. And they do panic, ill make sure to implement your input once this happens to the wiki that I'm currently helping to grow right now.

  • http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/:DisneyWiki:Do's_and_Don'ts also has some info on how to deal with spam or vandalism.

  • Great tip. However, I doubt anyone on my wiki will read this, as I'm the only active user, and admin, on my wiki, and there is next to zero activities by anyone else. Apologize me for my first post...

  • Thank you for this. I'm an adult and have already learned most of this, but many here may not have, and this page helps streamline and teach how to react in these situations, thereby helping to prevent escalations.

  • Would the troll part include admins? Just asking.

    • It sure as hel! should!

    • We got an admin on the monster hunter wiki who trolls on people, then he gets them mad, then blocks them for telling him off.

    • contact staff about this SOB.

    • Have you reported him/her to the wikia admins, or are they one?

    • He is an admin

    • Then the other admins should be aware and do something about it. You should post his name here and complain - loudly! :|

    • The other admins should review or such, then take his power away if it isn't just a 'he said she said' situation.

    • The bad part is, they won't do anything about it, my friend was blocked because he trolled on her in the chat, right in front of the other admins, she has even said that she does not view him as an admin.

    • Go to the above article, to Resources, click on contact Wikia, and state your problem and the troublemakers username. At least one admin on this site should care enough to do something - and take away all his admin powers until found guilty, or something. Be sure to have a couple of users ready to corroborate your side of things, and if you can 'photo' or save the actual harassment in order to show it to them, so much the better for you. They actually have the power to call the police in on this if the case warrants it. If you don't have proof of some sort, this might not go anywhere, but at least you'll have done something about it, and brought it to the top hierarchy's attention.

    • If you are having issues with an active admin, it's best for the community to talk about what to do before you use Special:Contact. We do not normally get involved in disputes on wikis. Good luck!

    • If i confront this problem, he will get mad and troll, and i know when someone tells me to stop, i do it, but when they tell him to stop, he keep going, i'm scared.

    • What, that he will block you?

    • Yes, he's a cruel admin.

    • Yeah I had a dig, and he's talk page header says it all. My advice: avoid him, and treat him as if he is right at all times. But what do I know?R

    • So you checked artidermis pardox's page?

    • Yeah, and I was refering to "Let me get this straight, if you do any of the above merely to annoy me then I won't hesitate you clean you out for good" as the thing that says it all.

    • How will i come forword with this on the monster hunter wiki? if i do he and his "friends" will attack me, i'm to scared to do anything without being trolled on. ;(

    • I think you need to calm down a bit. Don't be so frightened of this Admin, and either don't do anything, or defend your position if he attacks you. After all, he is only typing, and the worst he can do is block you. If that is a problem, then just lay low, and do the edits that are needed. What ever you do don't undo any of his edits, don't engage in an edit war with him, and don't argue with him. He is a bully and if you don't have any other users on the wiki that are on your side, wait. If he has pissed you off, there will be more users that'll get annoyed with him, and his ways in the future.

    • He has pissed me off and a few others (like my friend) the whole three months i have been on the mh wiki, all i've seen is him trolling, throwing a few insaults and provoking and blocking good people, so you know what? he needs his power striped away and becoming a normal editer. I'm tired of good people getting hurt and him getting a laugh out of blocking them.

    • I agree, so I would do what Meighan said.

    • So, what to do about artidermis paradox?

    • Hey guys, let's move this convo to a talk page or your home wiki where the issue is happening. Thanks!

    • Been there, done that, nothing's happened to the admin!

  • But what if they enjoy seeing there edits reversed?

    • Revert, block, ignore. The more noise you make about it, the more they will get encouraged. Just block them, and they will quit on their own.

    • I think it should be Block, Revert and ignore, but the other works...

    • That implies that you would block after every edit, rather than warning. Much better to leave warnings for minor cases of vandalism, rather than assume bad faith and block when one might not be needed.
