The first job of the year for the Wikia Technical Team is to upgrade the wiki software for the site. The software we use to allow you to edit is MediaWiki and we will be upgrading from MediaWiki version 1.15 to 1.16.1 -- similar to the version Wikipedia is currently using.
Most of the changes are to the back-end of the site, so you will experience little change from what you see now. But this version also contains a lot of bug fixes, as well as adding additional RSS feeds for watchlists and adjustments to the preferences page. There will also be a couple of other changes you might notice. For those that want the full technical details, you can see the complete release notes
Currently, we are working to ensure that all our extensions and features are compatible with the new version. The next step will be some internal changes to the database tables to get them ready for the change. This will start on Monday January 10th, and will take at least a week to complete. These are all internal changes, so you shouldn't see anything different on the wikis at this stage. If you do experience a problem, please use Special:Contact to let us know.
Once that's underway, we'll start updating wikis in batches -- starting with this wiki and the Community Test wiki. Once the first batch is done and stable, we'll continue rolling out the new version to other wikis over the following week or so. We will update here as the process continues, so please watch this post.
Past experience tells us that a software upgrade like this is likely to have glitches, despite our preparation! So please look out for oddities, and let us know via Special:Contact if you see any problems.
