Promoting Your Wiki on Community Central's Blogs

Sannse January 22, 2016 User blog:Sannse Google
Everyone is welcome to write about their community on Community Central's blogs, whether it's an old and established wikia, or one that's brand new.

The two most important things in doing this are to provide a link to the wikia, and make sure you explain what the project is about.

Blogs that are just a sentence or two long, and don't include a link or an explanation are not going to attract any attention, and may even be deleted. Remember, most people on Central will have very different interests to you. So you need to try and encourage them to come to see your project anyway.

When you create your blog post, you need to think about what you want people to know. And what those people will want to know. The Community Central community might be interested in things like:

  • What is your wikia called?
  • Where is it? (give a link!)
  • What is it about?
  • Why are you making a wikia about this topic?
  • Why might people want to join your community?
  • What have you written so far?
  • What do you want to do with the wikia in the future?
  • How could others help out?

It's also good to add a picture. Maybe one that shows your subject, like a cake for a Cake Wiki.

So here's my example for an imaginary wikia about butterflies.

Polyommatus icarus

A beautiful Common Blue butterfly

Hi everyone. My name is Sannse, and I would like to share my new project, The Butterflies Wiki. I'm making this so you can get all the information you want about butterflies, my favorite insect! I love to see all the colors of these wonderful insects and want to give everyone a chance to enjoy them too.

I started getting interested in butterflies some years ago, just from looking at those that visited my garden. Since then I have gone to nature reserves and seen many other species,. I was lucky enough to see and photograph a High Brown Fritillary last year, that's the most endangered butterfly in the UK. I also took the photo that's on this blog. It's of a Common Blue Butterfly (Polyommatus icarus)

If you love butterflies, or are just interested in making a great community about something awesome, please join me. So far I've written just 10 pages, but I want to make many many more. My goal is to have a page for each species, and pages about other things related to butterflies including their habitats, foods, migration patterns (yes, some butterflies migrate) and many other topics.

I also want to grow an active chat to talk about butterflies and other things we find interesting, and a forum for questions about butterflies. Eventually this should be a vibrant community of butterfly fans. I definitely don't know everything about butterflies, but I'm willing to learn, and willing to help others learn too. Maybe if more people learn about the wonder of these insects, then there will be less that, like the High Brown Fritillary, become endangered. It would be tragic to lose more beauty from this world.

I would love you to add a page about any butterfly, or to help with categories and images. Or you could ask a question on the blog, I'd love to try and find an answer for you. I could also do with some help setting up infoboxes for the wiki, those look tricky.

I hope you will join me, and together we can make The Butterflies Wiki awesome!

And here's a good real example of a good promotion blog: User blog:Princess Diva/We need contributors! - Stitchers Wiki

So feel free to promote your community on Wikia, we would love to hear about it!
