Top Chef Laurine Wickett preparing her food tastings

This past weekend, the Healthy Recipes Wiki hosted its first event, Food & Tech: A Recipe for Better Eating, to promote healthy eating, discussion and community building.

It was a sunny day in San Francisco, and the highlight was a panel discussion hosted by our very own Jimmy Wales. Panelists such as best selling author Dr. Dean Ornish and Editor-in-Chief of CHOW Jane Goldman discussed ways we can use technology to promote better eating. They touched on ways to leverage iPhone apps and websites to help people follow their habits and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Another wonderful element was the event's family activities which included cookie making, face painting, and food tastings. Our volunteer chefs bravely turned out over 1,800 food tastings for the public, ranging from Baba Ghanoush to Avocado Salad and Spicy Black Bean Soup.

All of the event's free food samples were based off of recipes submitted by the Healthy Recipes Wiki community in a recent recipe contest! There were over 50 entries, add the top five winners included: BroccoBen's Baba Ghanoush, Lex Kravitz's Avocado Salad, Annie MacDougall's Spicy Black Bean Soup, Jane Boman's ‎‎Apple Walnut Salad and Mejesster's Butternut Squash and Apple Soup. For every recipe added to the event, Wikia donated a dollar to a participating food organization including Slow Food SF, Glide, SF Food Bank, La Cocina, CUESA and Forage SF.

The event was fueled with excitement about Healthy Recipes Wiki and Wikia. Some folks expressed interest in starting their own wikis, such as lactose-free and wheatless recipes, while others shared that they were excited to start contributing now that they have attended an event and spent time with the Healthy Recipes community. The Wikia staff and volunteers had a great time meeting current and new community members. Thanks to our volunteers for all of their effort and help!
