Subject: Plastics in the Pacific and Covanta's efforts to convert waste to diesel fuel

You may have heard about the substantial accumulation of plastics debris in the central Pacific. One group that has been trying to use this phenomenon to raise awareness of the need for avoiding littering and recycling plastics is Project Kaisei. You can read about them at

The folks at Project Kaisei are excited about the new technology we are piloting at our SEAMASS facility for converting organic waste to diesel fuel. If they can mount another expedition to the Pacific during this coming summer they would like to bring some of the recovered plastic to SEAMASS for testing there. I say if because they have yet to raise sufficient funds to get back to sea.

This is where YOU can help. Pepsi has started a program to fund projects that will “refresh” the world. The winning projects are determined through web-based voting. Pepsi has included Project Kaisei in the competing projects.
