Heroine Overview

Who, me? I'm not in trouble. And by the way, it's Supergirl. See? [points her chest] Super...girl. [points at her face, makes a cute face and flutters her eyelashes]
~ Supergirl to Superman in "Little Girl Lost"

Supergirl is a supporting character in Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited. She was the last Argoan and Superman's adoptive cousin.

She was voiced by Nicholle Tom.

History[]

Kara In-Ze is the sole survivor of Krypton's sister planet Argo. While exploring the space around the destroyed Krypton, Superman found Kara in a cryogenic facility and took her in as his adoptive cousin. Inspired by her adoptive cousin, Kara made a costume with Superman's logo and occasionally acted as Superman's effective sidekick in his adventures. She later becomes a member of the expanded Justice League.

A secret government project known as Cadmus had been undertaking numerous unethical experiments, all to find ways to counter the perceived threat of the Justice League. A clone of Kara is made, known as Galatea; eventually, the League prevails, while Galatea dies due to flaws in her design. The heroes learn of the origins of the clone and Cadmus, causing many to be distressed that they are so feared, whereas Kara is disgusted and feels violated by having her DNA stolen for the government monster. Kara carries a distrust of humanity afterwards, despite Superman's claims that most humans are good at heart. Her existing relationship with the Kents, plus fellow League members who are human, help improve her attitude, but it remains an issue.

During a time travel adjacent adventure, Kara met the Legion of Superheroes from the 31st Century, finding surprising connection with Brainiac-5, a heroic descendant of the malevolent Brainiac. After the strife, Kara chose to move to the future because of numerous factors, including being unable to acclimatise to the relatively primitive 21st Century Earth, and apparently falling in love with Brainiac-5; she wistfully farewells her cousin, Kal, but they wish each other well. Plus, she is reassured by entering a more familiar civilisation, and being with her love interest.

Personality[]

Supergirl is a kind, sweet, and compassionate girl who loves to help people and fit in with others. she looks up to her cousin, Superman, and tries her best to protect him and help him protect the world from all kinds of threats. However, Supergirl is not without her flaws. From her first appearances in Superman: TAS to JLU, she was criticized for being impulsive and reckless. By the time "Divided We Fall" rolls around, she was chosen to be in charge of the League while the original seven were in custody. In "Far From Home", Green Lantern himself notes that there is nothing more he can teach her.

Unlike Superman, she is new to Earth; due to his upbringing as a human, he had a fondness for them that she didn't share. He had a tendency to be more forgiving towards humanity, not judging them all when a handful plot against him; however, Supergirl doesn't have this, thus is resentful against humanity - which is partly due to her lack of contact with them, envy over them existing despite her own people's extinction, and her immaturity from her young age.

The human members of the League, plus people like the Kents, improve her opinion of the species, thus allowing her to feel at home in the new planet for a time. However, due to growing up in far more advanced civilisation, she found increasing difficulty to adapt to a "primitive" race. When the opportunity arises, she eventually chooses to move to the 31st Century, as Earth had reached closer to her home world's standard; while she was sad at forever parting ways with her cousin and friends she had made on 21st Century Earth, she was content with a civilisation more like her own, as well as being with her love interest.
