Fandom Day poster

Every day, we see staff members walk through the door of Fandom offices eager to get to their desks. It's not because they want to get the day over with, and it's not because they're here for a paycheck. It's because they know they're here to help grow and support a community of millions of fans around the world. Those of us who are on the Community Team, like I am, get to work directly with the community each day, but not every Fandom Staff member has that opportunity. That's why, for the last several years, we've had an event called Wikia Day about twice a year, where every staff member takes an entire day to work on a wiki of their choosing.

In recognition of our new name, yesterday marked the first-ever Fandom Day! What's even more exciting is that it coincided with Halloween, so staff members across the world dressed in costumes while our global offices were decorated for the spookiest day of the year.

Community editing[]

This year, staff members had two choices: they could work on a wiki, or write a Fandom Story. There were a lot of great choices of wikis this year!

  • Team Rejected Princesses dressed up as their favorite Disney Princesses (and a T-Rex—no, really) and founded the Nasty Princesses Wiki.
  • Team Delos Incorporated worked on Westworld Wiki, coordinating their efforts with the local community there to have a truly immersive user experience.
  • Team Hollywoo worked on Bojack Horseman Wiki and had some pretty impressive cosplay to go along with it.
  • Team Go for Baroque worked on the Classical Music Wiki, spiffed up the main page, and added a lot of new content.
  • Team Yass Queen, in costume as their favorite Broad City characters, revamped and grew the Broad City Wiki.
  • Team Wikia.org worked on wikis based around charitable causes and advocacy, including Domestic Violence and Suicide Prevention.

Other wikis we worked on included 7 Days to Die, Paragon Wiki, Madden Wiki, and Japanese Gamebook.

Here are some pictures of our teams throughout the day:

Fandom Stories[]

In our final Wikia Day a few months ago, we introduced Fandom Stories editing as an option for staff members so more employees could get acquainted with this new part of our brand. Now that we are Fandom powered by Wikia, even more employees signed up to write Fandom Stories. We had some great ones yesterday, and they'll be posted on our Fandom news and stories hub over the coming weeks.

Some of those stories are 8 Memorable Cartoon Sports Matchups (which won Best Fandom Story for Fandom Day!), Disney Princesses Ranked, 7 Lara Croft Games You Should Know About, 3D Printing for Cosplay: 5 Easy Props to Print at Home, When Rogue Won: In Defense of Return of the Jedi, and more. We can't wait for you to be able to read them!

We'll have our next Fandom Day sometime next year! Got any ideas for what communities we should edit on, or what Fandom Stories we could write? Let us know in the comments below!
